Chapter 1: The Summoning
The school bell signals the end of class and start of lunch period. Sitting by the window, Kai Tezuya slowly wakes up from his nap. He surveys his surrounding with uninterested eyes. His classmates start to move out of their seats. Some bolt for the cafeteria. Others start conversations with their friends. Everyone is talking, laughing, and eating. Nothing seems out of the ordinary. However, Kai is completely ignored.
Kai is the weird kid of the class, a loner by default. It is not like he is bullied. In fact, by doing kendo since he was little, Kai could protect himself quite well from any bullying. He does not have any enemy, but also does not have any friend. People feel repulsive from his unapproachable attitude and unresponsive nature. The teachers never bother to call on him in class, and even during group projects his teammates would ignore Kai and have discussion among themselves like he was not even there.
Kai-‘end of class already huh? That was a nice nap~’
Kai yawns and stretches. He then proceeds to bring out his bento that his mother made for him in the morning. It is still warm due to the summer heat outside. Inside are white rice and fried pork from dinner last night.
Kai eats quickly, finishing his lunch even before the half of lunch period was over. He then takes out an old portable gaming device and starts playing. It is an old game called Monster Hunter. It was popular around 60 years ago when gaming devices like Xbox or Playstation was still on the market. Now in 2080, however, virtual reality dominates the market with seemingly no competition. (AN: sorry to all MH fans. Let just say Capcom never make MH for virtual reality. I know it’s the DREAM, but for the sake of my story it won’t happen, sorry!!)
Kai-‘hmmn, I wonder do hunters even die. They always fainted. (AN: the ultimate question) not like I ever get killed anymore after playing this for so long’
Kai is a veteran at the game. After finding his grandfather’s 3ds in the basement with a copy of Monster Hunter inside at 5 years old, he has been playing the game since then. 11 years later, at the age of 16, Kai has over 10000 hours of gameplay. He is uninterested in new technology and games since his family expect him to take over the dojo and his training took most of his free time away.
Kai, however, loves Monster Hunter. Maybe it is that kind of action RPG combined with epic monsters that ensnared him. He feels that each monsters he hunted is unique in its own way. The hunter learns from the monster and likewise the monster evolved by studying its prey.
With the introduction of a new type of AI, monsters are smarter, being able to evade traps, arrows, bullets, and even learn the hunter or player’s habit to use it against him. No longer will a monster follow a repeated pattern. Instead, it can respond accordingly to what was happening around it.
Due to the increase difficulty, many players had complained to the developers, but not Kai. He was determined to be the hunter and not the hunted. He learned from the monsters themselves, studying the behavior and moves of his prey to capitalize on their weakness.
Looking at his character screen, Kai feels a satisfaction and a sense of accomplishment.

Kai can use all types of weapons, but his favorite is the long sword. Maybe being influenced by his kendo training, he feels that its range and speed are perfect for him to control.
His favorite long sword is the Le Décalogue, crafted from an S rank monster named Shagaru Magala. Although there is a slightly better dragon long sword, Le Décalogue has 45% affinity. When hitting a monster’s weak point, it does an extra 45% damage! Using Kai’s hunting style, which relies on waiting for a monster to make a mistake and then going for a fatal attack, high affinity long sword suited him greatly.

Over 11 years, Kai had collected all weapons and armors available in the game. He also soloed all quests, even the online ones that supposed to require 4 veteran hunters to complete. However, Kai does not stop playing. He keeps honing his skill to a monstrous level. Using the rest of lunch time, Kai quickly finishes the G rank quest he was on.
Kai-‘hehehe, that was too easy. The elder dragon didn’t even last 15 minutes…’
Classmate 1-“Uwa! Look at that creepy smile…Why is he even in this class.”
Classmate 2-“Shh! You know his family run the number one dojo in Japan. Better not offend someone like that.”
Let talk about Kai’s school, Aganami Private Acadamy. It is a school for the elites of elites. The school boasted to have the best education accepting only 100 talented individuals every year. It has the prettiest and smartest ojou-samas and the most handsome and chivalrous princes attending from all around the world. Classes are divided into different group depend on a student academic ability ranging from A to D.
Kai is placed in class A, the cream of the crop. It is not like he wanted to stand out or be popular, but a promise to his mother to always do his best in school keeps his grade at the top. His social life, however, is a different question. Since he kept to himself most of the time, responding to other with only short words and nods, Kai soon found himself unable to make friends. He does not care anyway, and thus the situation got worse until now when weird rumors make his classmates have a prejudice against him.
Kai put his game away when the bell rang. He scanned the class one last time before going for another nap. Most students already returned to their seats and waited for the teacher. There was, however, a group of students consisted a boy surrounded by girls in the front. The boy, however, ignored the girls around him. He was trying to start a conversation with another girl.
His name is Herod Avilov, a foreign prince from Russia. He is handsome, smart, and rich. Unlike Kai, Herod is out going and well spoken, charming most people in class. As the result, many girls had confessed to him, but he just smiled and changed the topic. At this moment however, it seems like he is having trouble with a girl for the first time!
The girl who looks like she is trying to ignore Herod’s constant attempts is Yuno Jefferson, the number one beauty in this school. Her father is the President of the United Kingdom, and her mother is the daughter of the Emperor of Japan, truly a princess among princesses. She inherited her blond hair from her father but a charming Asian face from her mom. If one was to think of a foreign heroine from an anime, Yuno would fit the thought perfectly.
Herod-“Miss Jefferson, if you would please allow me the honor of taking you as my partner to the state ball this week.”
Herod bends over 45° with his right arm across his chest just like one of those knights in a fantasy world. Yuno, however, continues to ignore him and stay silent. The girls around Herod starts to get restless.
Girl 1-“Herod-sama, can’t you tell she’s ignoring you? How about you go with me instead.”
Girl 2-“Yeah, Herod-sama! There is nothing so special about her, and she’s too prideful for her own good!”
Herod, however, ignores the girls.
Herod-“It seems like class has started, I will talk to you after class miss Jefferson.”
He then walks to his seat like nothing had happened.
Girl 3-“Wait for me, Herod-sama!”
All those girls around Herod are all daughters of big corporations in Japan. They are all spoil ojou-samas. But what is a big company compared to a prince of a country? Thus, they swarm around Herod like bees attracted to honey.
Kai, seeing nothing interesting concerning him is happening, puts his head down and goes back to dreamland. Right when the teacher steps into the classroom, however, a bright light covers the room. Weird shinning circle envelopes all the students. After a couple of minutes, all the students and the teacher pass out while their bodies start to disappear.
???-“Is it a success?”
???-“I don’t know. But they are here!”
???-“Are these the hunters of legend that will drive those monsters back from our land?”
