I thought against it for a second. The theme of the trailers was survival. Each trailer also taught a story of the beta-testers. Most testers died, some where left in precarious positions, and one made it to the end of the beta-test with an established shelter and the basics of earth magic. "Yes" I thought to myself. The game was meant to be unforgiving yes, however, with a little knowledge it could go from insanely hard to very.
Select race from Human, Dwarf, Elf, and Beastman.
Humans are average and receive no penalty to skills and attributes. They can learn all magics but get no special affinity towards one. Humans start with ten extra luck.
Dwarves are short and stout. They receive penalties to all magic except their clan's element and earthen magic. A dwarfs clan is determined by the birth tattoo's on the body. Dwarves start with a -5 penalty to agility and +5 to dexterity. Crafting skills level 5% faster.
Elves are tall, agile and intelligent. They receive +2 int and +3 agility. Depending on their breed they may be unable to learn the opposite school of magic at the cost of increased skill in birth element. I.e Fire elf cannot learn water magic but gains affinity with fire.
Beastman are hybrid of humans, dwarfs, or elves, endowed with beast blood. They receive bonuses based of hybrid combinations and total amount of beast blood.

I thought to myself for a moment. A dwarf would probably be the best start, as the easiest shelters are created with earth magic. However, until a method of character revival is created they would be very vulnerable to fast monsters. Humans were a choice, albeit boring. The bonus luck was a bit of a wasted stat. You should make your own luck, after all. A elf could be a strong choice but.
In the end beastman would be the best choice. The best way to survive a hostile environment when you have the skills to avoid starvation is to avoid the hunters. Thus, if I chose a hybrid where I have good abilities to flee or detect enemies they would be much less of a problem.
Ill go with a beastman then.
Please select hybrid and percentage of beast blood. 10% is the minimum. Higher percentage brings more traits from the race.
A slider appeared with all possible hybrid forms. It wasn't just mammals there either. I saw snakes, frogs, birds, and everything in between. I guess being a naga is entirely possible.
For detection, however, a dog would be a strong choice.
When I checked the traits of the dog, the increased smell and hearing required a high amount of beast blood. I was going to keep my blood to around 10%. Any higher may suffer intelligence penalties. I checked out the bat next. Echo-location was available with 20% but going that far caused the beginning of useless wings. You need a large concentration of blood for the wings to work, and you cant fly long with them either. The owl had the same issue, although was a bit better due to intelligence gains. Cat's and rat 's were up next. Rat's, I excluded for looking a bit ugly even with a low amount of blood. I almost went with cat, seeing as it received good hearing and +3 to agility and dexterity at the cost of 3 strength. However, next to the cat I saw the rabbit. Stronger hearing, +5 agility, -2 Strength, and a 30% bonus to jumping. Losing the strength wasn't a major issue, as it didn't give a percentage reduction like the winged hybrids suffered. The big issue, which was circumvented with a low amount of blood, was vegetarianism. With 10% blood I ignored the penalty (although lost the ability to just eat grasses) and still made off with the base stats.
In the end, I was a human-rabbit hybrid. The only features I got from the rabbit blood was drooped rabbit ears. I could exchange the ears for body fur or bucked teeth, but the ears were mostly covered by my hair. Aside from that the only thing I changed was my hair color from blonde to brown, seeing as standing out too much is a death sentence. I could have shaved my beard, but without tools to cut it, it would just regrow. Besides, gruff survivalists were much better for this world. I didn't spend 19 years eagerly awaiting for a beard to just cut it off.
