Chapter 1

Day 1

Homo Magus - Dual Deity Enhanced Conversion complete.

See Character Sheet for current stats and abilities.

A rush of sensation flooded into my head, a wave of intense pain slamming in straight behind it.

I could dimly hear my friends shouting for my attention but couldn’t even open my eyes to see them, never mind responding.

As I lay there, the pain slowly ebbing away, I began to perceive the world around me again. Just not through my eyes.

I could see Viv sitting backwards on a chair a few feet away, Lisa knelt on my legs and Mark sat on my chest, pinning my arms, his face a

I coughed and Mark jumped up, gesturing for Lisa to move as well.

Viv merely leant further forward on her chair and looked at me.

While all of this was happening in my mind’s eye, I noticed that the pain had finally washed away, although the overload of sensory information was still there.

I went to talk and spent a good minute coughing and spluttering as

“I daren’t open my eyes. I’m seeing the world right now with some sort of echolocation ability and I’m worried as soon as I open them or start to move, it’s going to get worse”

“Just open them Raz”, laughed Viv, “Trust me, it’ll last two seconds and then you’ll be fine”

“How do you know?”, I asked, trying to mask the pain from my voice

“Because it’s happened to us too”, she laughed again, smirks appearing on Mark and Lisa’s faces as I grimaced, snapping my eyes open and immediately seeing the changes in my friends.

Lisa’s hair had gone from a muddy orange to the brightest red I had ever seen, almost blood-like in its colouring and her eyes had changed to match.

Mark had gone from short-haired to completely bald, with not a bit of hair anywhere I could see and his eyes had developed odd shoots of purple from the pupil to the edges of his eyes.

The strangest of them all was Viv. Her eyes and hair had become solid white, but strange tattoos had appeared all over her body. Like tendrils of pure shadow, they writhed and squirmed in strange patterns over her body.

“I’m a Hereditary Magister of the Arach Empire”, smirked Viv, “The tattoos are the way I’ll be identified when the Arach get here in a little over a year”

“I’m apparently a Monk of the Apostate, third in line to being Abbot of the Diocese of Old Terra, or Gaea, whatever that is”

“And I’m an Amorakian Bloodweaver. Whatever one of those is”, Lisa growled, her voice being several levels deeper than it was previously while still clearly being feminine.

“How do you know this?”, I asked, my perception flicking between my eyes and this brain-vision I now had.

“Just think Character Sheet and it will pop up. It’ll be in the Class Section”, laughed Viv, obvious delight at my lack of knowledge etched onto her face.

I waited a moment and then thought Character Sheet not expecting anything to happen but a quick flash and information started scrolling up my vision again.

“That’s what we had too, you just need to cycle some Mana around inside you, it’s quite easy once you find it”, smiled Lisa, showing me her hands. Her glowing hands.

“That’s what Viv was saying before we got here, mine and Lisa’s hands were glowing, we told her what we’d done and then hers started glowing, when we got here the messages for changing our template to Homo Magus popped up”

“How long did yours take?”

“Not an hour like yours, mine was about ten minutes. I have no active Deity but a connection to the Warrior Spirit, whatever that is, that lets me channel the battle skills of my ancestors, with no cost”, laughed Mark, the amateur kickboxer in him shining through

“Obviously no Deity would want Mark”, Lisa chuckled, “I’ve got a connection to a Deity called Leto and my species isn’t Homo Magus like Mark’s, it’s Amorakian. I’ve got a bunch of active and passive Skills that are Locked until Level 5 but from their names, I think I’m going to be able to control normal wolves and transform into a big one”

“And I’ve got two Deities, Uttu, Goddess of Fate and Shadows, and Lugh, God of Truth and Justice. Fitting, isn’t it”, Viv smirked, her eyes catching mine, “Now tell us yours”

“Thoth, Elder God of Knowledge, and Morrigan, Tri-Goddess of Magic. Homo Magus, with a Dual Deity Enhanced Bloodline bit after it, then my Class just says Potentia Candidate, so not the foggiest”, I grimaced, using my mind's eye to look inside myself to find this Mana they were talking about.

With a bit of difficulty pushing my mind’s sight past my skin, I silently struggled for a few minutes.

I could feel the sweat rolling down my back as I strained harder and harder to see inside myself before finally pushing past the resistance that was there. I immediately saw what must have been the core of my Magic.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

A bright ball of light, flashes of multi-coloured lightning streaking through it at the centre of my body, right behind my solar plexus. I stared at it intently for a solid minute before imagining my hand reaching out to it, pinching a portion of it between my mental fingers and stretching it out.

The orb seemed to stretch until a thin strand started to slowly grow out of it. With intense focus and painstaking care, I slowly pulled and pulled at the strand.

Acting on instinct, guiding the strand to my mind seemed the most logical first choice.

The moment they met, a spark of energy through my perception out of my body and my eyes swam, a bright pain behind my eyes telling me something was wrong.

“I can see all my status now. I’ve got a few Skills and Abilities, they’re just a bit random. We’ll go over everyone’s later? I need to raise the barriers around the house and then we need to find out what’s going on everywhere, yeah?”, I rushed, not wanting to explain to my friends that I thought what was happening to us was even stranger in comparison to this entire System in the first place.

“Yeah, sounds good”, grunted Mark, already moving to the weapons rack, obviously intent on getting his hands on things my dad had only let us touch with him here before.

As soon as I stood up, Viv and Lisa strolled into the house, arms linked and talking in hushed whispers.

With a practised step, I walked to the back of the garage and pressed a few spots on the wall, a rotating panel coming out of the wall, a keypad emblazoned in bright orange and green across it.

Tap-tap, tap-tap and the panel rotated back, a beeping coming from everywhere and nowhere all at once as several things started happening. The garage door started rolling shut, thick, reinforced slabs coming out of the ground around the house, slowly covering the entire bottom floor of the house.

My dad’s defences now not seeming quite as kooky as they had before.

As the slabs settled into their final places, a soft, thin barrier sprang out of the top of them, completely sealing the house before fading to a translucent veil of blue around the house.

“That’s new Raz, guess your dad already knew some Magic”

“Well obviously Viv, he vanished in a flash of light, remember?”, I shouted back, frustration at her always stating the obvious seeping into my voice.

“You both need to come and look at this, it’s bad”, shouted Lisa.

Mine and Mark’s eyes immediately snapped to the door house, barely a second before walking towards it.

The moment I crossed the threshold, my Mind Sight started picking up Viv and Lisa, a step further allowing me to fully see their facial expressions, although I still couldn’t hear what they were saying or hearing.

As we got within earshot of the tv in the dining room, we finally heard what they were hearing, the news was repeating the same words over and over again as Viv flicked through channels.

“Stay indoors. We are being attacked by unknown entities. It is not safe. Stay indoors”

“You need to see what they’re showing, hurry up”, growled Lisa, the feminine edge to her voice almost completely lost in her apparent fear.

I stepped around the corner and saw exactly what I had heard in Lisa’s tone.

The screen was showing a hundred-foot-tall kaiju, an almost exact copy of Godzilla, destroying buildings in Lunduen. A dozen other images were on the screens, various cities being attacked by equally massive creatures.

“How do we survive that?”, whispered Lisa, tears glistening on her cheeks while Viv’s arm laid across her back, both of them intent on the images before them.

Mark stepped up next to them and also wrapped his arm around Lisa, a rare moment between the two in public.

Lisa pulled away from Viv and rushed headlong into Mark’s arms.

The two of them embracing, Viv looked at me, mouthing, ‘I think we need to give them some privacy’, I nodded my head and we both slowly slipped out of the room, heading straight for my dad’s study.

Quickly crossing the hallway and into his study, a memory flitted through my mind.

My dad sat at his desk, a swarthy woman and equally swarthy man stood on the other side of his desk, gesturing wildly at the locked cabinet in the corner.

Why on earth that would pop back into my head now, I had no idea.

But in this strange new world of Magic, Species and Skills, there had to be a reason for it.

So I did the only logical thing.

I walked up to the cabinet and slammed my elbow into it.
