An azure blue. A sky stretching the horizon.

I reached for it, stretching my shoulder, forearm, hand and fingers to their very limits.

It was all useless of course. No matter how I stretched I would remain ground-bound.

Still, I prevailed in my endeavor. Leaning with all my might.....Until my body left the ground.

Not to hower or soar above of course. Rather I fell, fell and fell. Until the sky and ground were tainted a brilliant crimson.

Falling, falling, falling, I felt I had been falling for an eternity. Darkness surrounding me as I fell. I felt lost. Unsure. And above all; scared.

Regret filled my mind. I did not know why. Nor did I remember why I was falling. All I knew was that I had done so for a while.

That when the falling ended so would I.

I...screamed out.

Despite not being able to move my body, not to mention my mouth. I wailed out.

Please, I beg you. For once in my life give me something, anything. Please save me.

And as I called out to the darkness surrounding me, a light flickered.

Like a firefly, it moved in the nothingness, around and above me. It flew in all directions. All while shining an iridescent hue.

Finally, it landed above my head...or at least what I thought was my head. And it entered my being.

Suddenly I felt a warm light exuding from my body, pushing away the ever-cold darkness. My body filled with power. I could finally move though only a little.

It felt like my muscles had not been active in a long time. At the same time, my every move was met with a viscous resistance. Like I was in a swimming pool.

Desperation settled as I took it all in. I thrashed about trying to get out of my prison, still falling. Only to realize that beyond the viscous liquid, there was another barrier surrounding me.

This one was solid, surrounding me and the liquid on all sides.

I banged against it, but my body wouldn't listen properly and only swung in random directions.

Realizing I would soon die, I was overcome with a sudden calm. My erratic behavior from earlier already forgotten.

Yes I would die, and I only had myself to thank for it. Such a feeling settled in, memories and feelings I did not know whence came.

It was stupid really. I traded one hell for another; at the cost of my life. A bad trade deal if I had ever seen one. One I now deeply regretted.

Still. What would I gain from going on? What remained in that old hell which could be desired? Only darkness, maybe even fouler than this one. I wanted to live, but had no future even if I kept on living.

Only dreams had kept me going until now, after all. Impossible dreams, dreams I could never achieve. Still, it was the only time I felt happy. When my vision replaced reality with fantasy.

So knowing these were my final moments. I closed my eyes. Giving away one darkness for another. But it did not last long.

Darkness turned to a vast azure stretching above. This was of course not real. Only a dream I had so many times. Soaring above, free from the shackles of my waning mortality. Still, as always, I let it trick me. For here in my mind, in my dream, I was happy.

And so. With death soon approaching. Trapped in a suffocating prison. I placed my hand above my head. A motion, oh so familiar to me.

Crack.

And the world broke.

As I continued to fall I continued to press towards the false sky.

The cracking sounds remained for what felt like an eternity. Growing louder and louder.

Crack. Crack.

My world was bathed crimson.

And I exclaimed my freedom to the world.
