Wandering at the Bottom

A certain street in the middle of the city has a lot of businesses opened up in the middle of the day. From restaurants and cafes on the ground level to hotels and offices that tower over others. There is one particular building that stands thirty-one floors up. It is perhaps the tallest building around and no other building comes close; it towers over all. Many people look up to it and think what the view looks like from up there. And there are few who are envious of those who work in such buildings. One particular person on a certain street is looking up at the top of that particular building.

They sighed in a way that was not from physical exhaustion but of mental frustration. It was the person's day off and was on their way to meet some of their friends at a pub. Perhaps talk about what they were doing with their lives, the hottest TV shows right now, maybe about their campaign activities, and drink beer.

They continued looking at the building. How they wish they had half of the wealth as whoever was at the top. Living in the city was tough and drained their wallet. Once every two weeks was the only time they would actually go outside of their home to do something instead of talking to the friends on Discord or go to their work which they are probably overqualified for, except the rallys but those don't happen too often.

They were envious of the riches of others, and perhaps they do have the right. To live with their parents to save money. To think about where to travel for their next trip. To think about ways to make the world a better place for everyone, including themselves. Perhaps more for the experience of their own shortcomings over anything else. Or perhaps the world really is messed up and that's the world they live in. Or perhaps even a mix of both where they are responsible but not completely; the game is unfair but they can still choose how to play.

They grew up believing to be special. They went through their early years with high hopes for the future. They pursued what wasn't exactly all that practical or useful. They became resentful of others who did the opposite. They became bitter towards the ones up top. They started to listen to those with similar struggles and became a part of the community with them. They refuse to change but force others to do so.

Now they look up hoping one day they will take the place of whoever is on the top.

But that won't happen today. Today is a day to have fun. Enjoy life. Enjoy friends. Enjoy beer.

But someday, when the shake comes, that's when they will be responsible for the aftershock. Someday they will enjoy the riches. Someday they will have no worries. Someday they will be the leader of one.

But not today. Or yesterday. Or tomorrow. Perhaps next week. It's really hard being an adult, even if you live with your parents.
