Chapter 27: Why Yanderes?

After calming Astrid down a little, she explained her situation to Hazel. And what she heard only concerned her more than anything.

“So, this Dolk guy was one of your subordinates and was so obsessed with you that he decided to wound you so you couldn’t escape and also possibly killed the rest of your people?”

Astrid hesitantly nodded; her eyes red from crying her heart out. Hazel sat next to her as she told her the story, to which she mentally groaned after getting full coverage of the backstory.

For one thing, Dolk was some kind of Yandere. To make matters worse, he was a Male Yandere. While Female Yanderes were a more popular staple, there were still recognizable male ones too. And they were just as dangerous.

And now…Hazel realized that there was one in the very forest she was in right now. On the bright side, she wasn’t the object of Dolk’s obsession. Then again, it would be even worse if this dark elf rogue got jealous of her. Yeah, that might be bad.

From what Hazel heard about this guy, he took down his people just to keep Astrid to himself. Believing that he was doing the right thing for her. So, not only was he obsessive and dangerous, but also delusional. Wonderful.

He was also calculating considering that he planned out his ambush on Astrid and the other dark elves with the Orcs. And if Hazel was right, this guy did this overnight after their conversation about something else.

And now, after saving Astrid, Hazel had to deal with a dark elf Yandere who was likely searching for his one and only at that very moment. Astrid said that she left him in an injured state with some Orcs that were about to attack them, so there was a chance that those monsters managed to take him down.

But Hazel had a feeling deep within her gut that the Dark Elf rogue wasn’t dead yet. And until she saw a body or something, she wasn’t going to assume anything and lower her guard until then.

After Astrid told Hazel everything, the pair simply sat in silence for a little bit, neither one striking up a conversation. In that silent moment, Hazel pondered about what her plan was after hearing all of that.

For one thing, she kind of already fell knee-deep into this situation that she couldn’t just walk away from this. Not that a part of her didn’t think about that first, because she did, but tossed the idea away after realizing that plan wouldn’t work either. Not unless she left the Forest Island altogether.

And of course, Hazel couldn’t do that. She couldn’t leave Astrid while some psycho Yandere was after her. Well, technically, she could, but her conscience wouldn’t let her anyway. So, she was stuck here in the forest until she figured out a solution to this problem.

“I need to head back to the camp,” Astrid insisted, trying to get back on her feet until Hazel held her back.

“You can’t in your current condition. Plus, going back would only make things worse for you” she said calmly. “with that Dolk bastard chasing you, he could lure you into a trap like before. And use your people as bait.”

“Then what do you expect me to do?!” The dark elf snapped, standing up and glaring at Hazel. “I can’t just leave my tribe members. They need me!”

“If they’re not already dead.” Hazel coldly declared

Hearing this, The Dark elf paused for a moment and turned to glare at the mage. Hazel accepted the glare and met her gaze, not backing down before Astrid.

“Take that back,” Astrid growled, her eyes narrowing in a hostile manner.

“I will. But right now, you need to understand your current situation, alright? Leaving right now with your wounds is not ideal. You’re too weak to fight and Dolk knows this. And he will use that to his advantage. You should know this by now. For now, we should take this opportunity to rest and collect ourselves.”

Letting Astrid go right now would only get her killed. She was too wired and angry to think straight, and that was what Dolk would take advantage of. Added with the fact that she was also injured, that only added fuel to the fire.

And Hazel couldn’t afford to let Astrid go and get herself killed. Not when she needed her. The mage had been fine so far, but there were things that she couldn’t do alone. Which was why she needed to stick to the Dark Elf as much as possible.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

“You cannot go after your people or Dolk so rashly. You told me during your story that you’re the daughter of the Tribal Chief and next in line to take charge, right? Then, let me ask you; do you think it's wise to recklessly act on your emotions and most definitely get yourself killed trying to save your people? Is that how you’re going to act when you become the Tribal Chief?”

Astrid hesitated to reply, a hint of realization dawning on her. As her eyes widened after becoming aware of her predicament, the dark elf hung her head low in despair as she knew what Hazel meant by this.

If she continued to act so impulsively, then she would not only put her life at risk but also the lives of her people as well. And that wasn’t something that a Leader should do. Leaders were supposed to act responsibly and most importantly, rationally.

And what Astrid planned to do just now was beyond what a Leader should be. And that was a problem she needed to understand now rather than later.

Even then, Hazel softly sighed, feeling a little guilty about her crass statement. Although she wanted to keep Astrid from doing something stupid, she could tell that she might’ve gone too far.

“Look,” She spoke up. “All I’m saying is that instead of bulldozing your way through, I think it would be better if we try to figure out a plan to deal with our current predicament, alright? We need to be smart about this. Not emotional.”

“Y-you’re right,” Astrid said glumly, sitting back down. “I...I’m sorry for my behavior.”

Hazel raised a hand. “It’s fine. I can’t say I wouldn’t act the same way if I were in your position. But I’m not, which is why I’m able to think more clearly and rationalize the situation.”

Hazel knew deep down that if she was in Astrid’s shoes, she would react the same way. If it was her brother and mother that was in danger, she would do everything in her power to go after them and save them from whatever threat that came their way.

Even if she was injured or mortally wounded, she wouldn’t stop until her family was safe. No matter how much she had to push her limits.

It’s one of the reasons why she sympathized with Astrid’s predicament and wanted to help. And what she was doing right now was preventing the dark elf from making a mistake that could result in her death. Or eternal imprisonment by the dark elf Yandere.

If Hazel was forced to pick an outcome, she’d rather choose death than being taken hostage by a yandere. That seemed like a fate worse than death itself.

In the back of Hazel’s mind, she pondered over a single question; why Yanderes?

Why was it that out of all the things she had to deal with, it had to be some super-obsessive, psychopathic, person that would kill anyone that even remotely gets close to the ones they love and were fixated on? Hazel honestly would’ve accepted another Cyclops rather than dealing with a Yandere.

They were crazy, delusion, and most importantly, dangerous. They would do whatever it took to keep their fixation to themselves. Even to the point where they’ll murder their loved ones family and friends because, in their head, all their loved ones needed to rely on was them.

Hazel shuddered at the idea of having to deal with a Yandere. If she could, she would’ve left Astrid and got off this forest island as soon as possible. But she couldn’t because of her conscience. What a dilemma she was confronted with.

While fretting over this, Hazel realized another potential problem. Her shelter could only house a single person, so both of them couldn’t go inside and rest. Not without getting packed together under there like sardines.

Hazel groaned, standing up from her spot, and moved over to her shelter that was still being covered. Behind her, Astrid spoke up with a confused tone.

“What are you doing?” She asked.

“I need to make some adjustments with my shelter,” Hazel stated, reaching down and pulling the cover off of her shelter and revealing the hole. “This hole can only fit one person, so I need to expand it to make some room for you.”

“Y-you don’t have to do that, though…” Astrid said nervously. “I can stay up here and…”

“Not gonna happen,” Hazel interjected. “You’re injured and need rest. If you keep watch all night, then you’ll be completely exhausted tomorrow.

“It wouldn’t be my first time not sleeping,” She pouted as if annoyed that Hazel was treating her like a child.

“Doesn’t matter,” Hazel asserted. “You’re going to sleep in this hole whether you like it or not, even if I have to drag you in the hole myself.”

Astrid scoffed with a grunt. “I highly doubt you could.”

“Would you like to test that theory then?” The mage turned around with a threatening smile.

Surprisingly enough, the dark elf appeared to have been intimidated by her expression as she awkwardly shrunk back in response. Once Hazel knew that her guest would be more or less obedient and stay put, she soon lifted the cover to observe the available space she had at the moment.

If Hazel could increase the room of her hole, then both she and Astrid would be able to go inside and get some rest without worrying about monsters. However, the problem is both the room and the cover.

Since she was expanding her shelter, she would need to make another cover that was both big enough and sturdy enough to keep monsters that walk on it from collapsing into the hole. So, Hazel had two jobs which were room expansion and crafting a new cover for them.

It shouldn’t be too hard. All she really needed to do was use [Mana Bolt] and expand the hole to a certain size then work on finding materials to make a bigger cover that to compensate for the side increase.

So, with the watchful eye of the dark elf on her, Hazel quickly got to work. Since there was no concept of night and day, she wasn’t necessarily on the clock. There was no sun rotating around this place, so it was technically always nighttime in this dungeon space. Still, Hazel felt a sense of urgency when she got to work as if she was running out of time. And that bothered her greatly.
