Soon Mike reached into his inner pocket and handed me a rectangular object. “What is it?” I opened the box and saw the newest iPhone 6. Surprised I spun back towards Mike. He smiled and held my hand. “You know we’re still teens, right? Obviously, we’ll need something to keep us entertained.”
He just smiled at me while I looked him up and back down at the phone. I knew we couldn’t afford it. More over two phones. Our income was not enough for this. I wanted to say something, but I just could not say anything negative before his smile. I just smiled at him and thanked him for his kindness.
As we headed back home a group of teens around our age caught our attention. They were surrounding a figure in black that was handing out packages containing powders. The teens were giggling while bagging the plastic bags. I was clueless as to what was happening back then, but Mike seemed to know exactly what was going on. When I glanced at his face, it was full of rage and frustration. It was the first time I had ever seen him make such an expression.
We stood there for minutes until one of the girls noticed our presence. I looked up at Mike once again, but his eyes were pinned to the figure that was handing the bags. He grinded his teethes as more and more powder came out of the person’s bag.
More teens started to feel our presence and gazed at us. To me it felt like they were trying to tell us to move along. I quietly whispered to Mike but there was no response. It was as if he had turned into a stone statue. Not a single muscle in his body dared to move an inch.
The longer we spent standing and eyeing the bizarre scene, the worrier I became. It didn’t take long until I could no longer withstand the girls’ glare. I gently tugged on Mike’s jacket, and he finally snapped out of it. “I’m sorry. What did you say?” My eyes filled up with tears as I was finally able get Mike’s attention. Mike made a horrified expression and struggled to calm me down but eventually he noticed the others’ stares and carried me to a nearby taxi stop.
Although usually there would have been an endless line of TAXIs starting at the very top corner of the platform, for some reason there were none. The awkward scene became even more awkward for the both of us since Mike caused me to cry and I was too embarrassed to say anything after breaking into tears.
We sat at the stop without a word. We’d burst out of our seats every time we’d see a taxi go by but that was about all that we did. It was death silent as the night grew older. 10 minutes felt like an eternity out there. But luckily, we were able to get the attention of a very old taxi. Usually we would’ve waited a bit longer for a better car to drive by but we didn’t have a choice today. We would’ve rather pay double for that taxi to drive us outta there than being awkward for another 10 minutes.
“Just the two of you?” asked the driver, who sounded like they were around our age. “Uhh… No, just her.” He said that and tried to get out of the cab.

“What do you mean? Aren’t you getting in?”
“You go ahead, I’ll just grab another cab.”
I held onto his arm and tugged him into the back seat. “Yes, just the two of us. Can you take us to 678 Henry Ville, Western State please?” I grabbed a card out of Mike’s pocket and handed it to the driver. “Sure thing hon, that’ll be 60 bucks.”
The drive back home wasn’t as awkward, I think that the driver knew we had a fight before the ride, he kept asking us questions to keep us going. He was very generous. Although his voice sounded a bit crook. It sounded as if he were a robot.
The driver dropped us off 2 blocks away from our house, claiming that the roads were blocked. At that time we were just so thankful that he’d given us a ride that we didn’t mind being dropped off there. As he was about to drive off, he lowered his window and called us in, “Make sure you guys make up, aye. It ain’t good to be mad at your partner for too long.” We both got flustered at his sudden talk but quietly nodded as his went his way.
The walk home was very quiet and uncomfortable, yet calming at the same time. It had been the first time we ever fought, although it wasn’t even a fight. We didn’t talk till we made it back home but it was nice to know that we had each other, and that we were no different from any other couples. Loving but fighting as well when necessary. It reminded us of how much of a human we were and not some monster that brought misfortune to everyone nearby.
Once we got home, Mrs. Vails was outside waiting for us to return. Her face was filled with worries but as we met eyes with her, her face brightened and her arms were wide open to give us a warm hug. I ran straight into her arms and grasped her tightly, burying my head on her shoulder. Mike watched me from a far with a slight grin.
Mrs. Vails seemed so happy once we told her about our engagement. She held my hands tightly, reassuring me of the choices I made, also reminding me that I could always call of the engagement or even divorce if needed. Mike looked panicked to hear her say that but we all laughed it off and headed home.
In the bath, I couldn’t stop myself from staring at the pendent he had given me. The pearl shined bright pink in the water. It was way too pretty to be worn by someone like me. It didn’t feel it reality. Once I got out of the shower, I jumped right onto Mike’s lap and gave him a peck on the cheek. His face turned bright red as his head dropped. It was always fun to make fun of him. He had always been such a gentlemen.
“You’re not mad anymore?” asked Mike while carrying me to the bed like a princess.
“At prince charming? Not anymore.” We both giggled as he pushed me down on the bed.
“You look beautiful Kate, so beautiful that I’m too afraid to even touch you without having second thoughts.” I wrapped my arms around him and pulled him in.
“You’re my one and only Mike. I love you unconditionally.”
His eyes softened. He slowly leaned into kiss me but pushed him away. “Young man, what are you trying to do getting onto the bed with those dirty clothes? Go wash up quick and let’s head to bed. We’ve had a long day.” He laughed as his help me up.
“Alright princess, head to bed first I’ll be right out.”
I giggled as he waddled into the bathroom. The room suddenly became quiet in his absence. I opened the phone case and started the phone. It had been the first time I’d ever laid eyes upon one. I always thought that it was too good for a nobody like me.
It was mesmerizing to watch the little screen light up and make small noises. Even that small thing was able to make its own noise. I turned the phone off and gazed up out the window. It was a full moon that day. The moon shined gleamingly and sorrowfully. I blinked away as the moon soon got covered by the clouds and waited for Mike to return.
