Chapter 2: Man down.

“MAN DOWN! CONTACT LEFT! EAST! MORE ROBOTS ON OUR SIX!”

“SCATTER! SEEK COVER!”

“COVERING! CALLING IN AN EAGLE!”

“JAX! JAX!” Micheal yelled, rushing through the dark foggy bush and sliding across the mud with a stim in hand. He lifted his arm, the syringe filled with a concoction of meth, morphine, and bio foam that he plunged into his friend’s chest. A super drug that would work alongside the suit’s systems to keep the Helldiver moving and mobile.

Jax gasped, taking in a breath, the pain in his chest subsiding to be replace with a numb euphoria.

“HOLY LIBERTY! I GOT SHOT!” Jax exclaimed, letting out a half-laugh as Micheal helped him to his feet.

“YEAH! YOU GOT SHOT!” Micheal yelled back, his voice breaking out into a laugh as his friend chuckled before a bullet from out of the bush struck Jax cleanly through his visor. “Huh?’

Jax fell backwards with Micheal immediately leaning forward on reflex to catch his friend who became limp and unresponsive.

“Jax? JAX?!” Micheal called out, his voice breaking as he stared at the mangled face of his friend behind the cracked visor that did nothing to stop the bullet that claimed his life.

Words appeared on his VISOR’s HUD, words Micheal could only go wide-eyed and stare blankly at.

“GET DOWN!”

Suddenly Micheal was lying prone, forced to the ground as heavy machine gun fire tore through the shrubbery.

“DOWN! DOWN! DOWN! KEEP YOUR HEAD DOWN! INCOMING!” Keller screamed as an Eagle Fighter flew overhead, delivering its payload by way of its 110MM Rocket pods.

Micheal tensed up, the shockwave of explosive Liberty washing over him as the CAS momentarily silenced the mysterious gunfire that had been aimed at them.

“On your feet! We’ve got more automatons on the way!” Keller yelled, grabbing Micheal by his wrist and pulling him to his feet. He turned, his head snapping towards Jax’s body. “No! Leave him! He’s dead!”

Micheal hesitated, his body tensing up as he eyed the corpse of his friend only to jolt from his daze as gunfire struck the nearby trees.

“MOVE!” Keller barked, Micheal’s SEAF training kicking in and propelling his legs forward through the mud.

“Who the hell are these guys?! Who is shooting at us?!” Micheal exclaimed, firing blindly behind himself with his MP-98 Knight SMG.

“SOCIALISTS!” Keller screamed back, raising her SG-25 Breaker Shotgun, the weapon spraying a cone of buckshot at the red orbs rapidly darting through the treeline.

Then, Micheal saw them as he took cover behind a palm-like tree to reload.

Humans.

Or what he initially thought as humans until he realized his assailants were metal shaped in the form of man with their white tipped skulls bearing an odd similarity to their Helldiver's patch.

Through the bush they matched, their beady red glare baying for blood as they crushed the world beneath their iron march.

“Reloading!” Keller barked, slapping Micheal on the shoulder to do his job and signal to him to lay down suppressive fire as they performed a fighting retreat.

“Where's Q1?!” Micheal yelled, emptying his entire magazine at an automaton rushing forward with an orange saber, his bullets shredding the abomination into bits of scrap.

Suddenly, a signal flare, one that was orange and burned brightly, one that Micheal recognized as a SEAF flare.

“Dropships inbound!”

“Ours?” Micheal asked dumbfounded, only for his heart to sink at the sight of four unknown vessels flying overhead with machines cradling the metal underbelly.

“NO!” Keller barked, knocking Micheal to the ground, the pair narrowly avoiding the rockets that detonated the nearby hillside, covering the two in soil and wooden debris.

“WHERE IS Q1?!” Micheal screamed, fumbling in the dirt to grab his rifle as a hulking machine was deployed from a nearby dropship. The titan hit the ground with a thud, its buzzsaw decapitating multiple trees as its iron body twisted to join the march of the machines bearing down on the two humans.

“We need to move!! UP THAT HILL!” Keller screamed, grabbing at Micheal who finally managed to grab his gun and was then clipped in the back by an iron bullet.

“GAH! I’M HIT! I’M HIT!” Micheal yelled, crawling on all fours, attempting to rise to his feet as Keller dragged him up the hill. “WHERE’S Q1?!”

“Here.”

Something flew by, Micheal’s helmet locking onto the ball and registering the marker for the orbital strike.

“On your feet Helldiver! Democracy never rests! And neither should you!” The Death Captain barked from behind a crag, a loud crack sounding out from the RS-422 railgun in his hands that caused the pursuing titan’s body to crumple as its head was blasted clean off with impeccable aim.

Suddenly Micheal was being hoisted up, his visor polarizing as an orange beam descended from the heavens, smiting down the enemies of Liberty with its all consuming heat.

“Super Earth above…” Micheal whispered, watching with awe as the orbital cannons from the Super Destroyer in orbit obliterated everything with impunity, its lazer consuming all things to cleanse the world of seditious sickness.

“Enough admiring! Move!”

Heeding the Captain’s words, Micheal reached into his pouch, fumbling with shaky hands to grab the stim as indiscernible words barked in his ear. Micheal didn’t hear them though, between his rapidly beating heart, the pain in his back, and his own ragged breathing, the only thing Micheal was focused on was getting to the other side of this-

****

Sergeant Eris Keller.

Keller flinched, her hands lifting up as a detonation sounded out from a foot in front of her where M3 had been. One moment he was there, the next, red mist, her black armor covered head to toe in red viscera.

“Dear Liberty.” Keller whispered, eyeing the mines strewn about on the other side as a severed leg belonging to none other than Micheal landed beside her.
