Chapter 3: Aren’t we supposed to kill bunnies first?
Standing at 2’6” tall, weighing in at 140 pounds, and covered in sleek grey fur, we have…. How do I do this?
“Use identify.”
Oh, [Identify]!
Son of Fenrir - Level 3
And the challenger, at 5’7”, weighing in at 120 pounds, and smelling like sheep, Sarah the demon-girl-person-thing!
“I think I should be concerned…”
Ding Ding Ding! The imaginary bells in Sarah's mind rang out to start the fight and with her right hand holding the knife she extended her left hand and flung out a bolt of mana just as she practiced with Lucifer before. They were very easy to form, likely due to her high intelligence and wisdom, and she previously shot it at the wall of the house she felt fairly confident in her aim.
And her confidence immediately dropped as it went quite wide. But before she could panic, she already started concentrating on forming another, knowing that this may not be as easy as she’d like. I thought we were meant to kill bunnies or rats first, I know I’m a much higher level than this wolf but I’ve never killed something before so this is my warmup I guess .
After a short yip in surprise from a bolt splashing against the wall just next to it, the wolf turned and rushed towards the girl, only to be met by the second demonic bolt. Despite the lack of style, this was all that was needed and the wolf immediately collapsed from just one bolt hitting it.
“Your concentration under pressure is surprising. Your aim less so.”
Aren’t you supposed to be my inner demon? Kinda acting a bit too cheery.
“My years of torturing souls have taught me that acting kindly is an effective tool in gaining one’s trust and assisting them in progress. However, I would often follow that by ruthlessly destroying their hopes and dreams, so this is a learning experience for me. But there is still time.”
Much more in character.
At level 10 and with 9 total stat points given per level, instead of the 5 given by a Common class, she could estimate her high values of 57 wisdom and 57 intelligence made her bolts overpowered in comparison to a level 3 wolf.
Awesome. Also, why was the wolf called a Son of Fenrir, Isn’t that the wolf from Norse mythology? I figured this apocalypse had a more Christian vibe with the whole Lucifer thing.
“Many pantheons compete over your world, as they have done for a millennium. We have had limited contact with your world before, which is why your culture carries legends about us, but the system now allows us greater influence over this world in proportion to the cumulation of our impact over history. Whether it is the pantheon of Heaven or that of Hell, or that of the Norse monsters and that of Asgard, we have all come to claim the world.”
She glanced around herself and saw another wolf prowling the edge of a building nearby, chewing on something that looked suspiciously like a human arm. Suppressing a gag, she pulled at the mana inside her, condensing it into the shape of a ball that she was becoming more and more familiar with, and with a swing of her arm launched it at the beast.

This one also missed.
However, before even checking its success, or lack of, she had already begun to build up another as the wolf locked onto her and began rapidly approaching. Barely two seconds before she had thrown her last bolt, a new one had arrived, but this time it was a direct hit on the Son of Fenrir, and with little fanfare its body went completely limp.
A brief scratch is all she heard before her body was thrown forward by the impact of the wolf that had snuck up behind her colliding with her back. Her body was thrown to the ground but thankfully she still had a hold on the knife she enchanted and in a panic she swung it behind her without even looking. Quickly rolling over, she turned to see the wolf already dead. A quick glance and she noticed that she barely even scratched it when she swung her knife, but with her [Demonic Mana Manipulation] she could feel the mana of the knife inside the wolf tearing it apart.
A scratch from the blade had one-shot it. Releasing the mana that she had already began to compress into another bolt, she cast her eyes towards the building the wolves had been lurking around.
Glancing inside, she saw the mauled bodies of two people in the doorway, a man and a woman, and what looked like more bodies hidden under rubble from the building’s collapsed ceiling. Although the man’s clothes were ruined, and an arm was missing, she noticed a backpack under the body that had yet to be touched. Despite the urge to gag, and while attempting to make as little contact with the body as possible, she peeled the backpack of him. With a quiet apology to the body, she unzipped the bag and took a look inside.
The man must have gone for camping equipment when he saw what went down outside. Taking a look at the torch, rope, several cans of beans and, most importantly, a Glock G19 with an extra clip that laid alongside. She had some familiarity with guns and despite not owning any weapons herself as she had once shot before with her mum in preparation for one of the action movies her mum had starred in.
Thanks mum, for once.
Thinking about the possibility of enchanting the bullets, Lucifer then spoke up; “The objects are too small and lack any mana needed to deal any significant damage. Your guns will become useless as the monsters pass Level 10. Enchanting them may help, but the bullets are too weak to work on and the gun is too delicate to hold a strong enchantment for long, thus the weapon would degrade very quickly.”
But enchanting the gun would work?
“Temporarily, yes.”
She set to work with a similar process to before, opening up the previous cut on her left forearm. Her experience of forming the demonic bolts allowed her to realize the difference of Level 10 [Ritual Magic]. Far more mana condensed over her blood onto the gun due to the ritual than what she herself was able to condense herself when forming bolts. Even still, she still felt like she had plenty of mana left.
As she stared at her new and improved weapon, which seemed to pulse with a slightly red glow, her musing was interrupted by the sound of growling from behind her. She quickly spun around in panic and was met with the sight of three wolves barely 10 meters away from her, having just entered the building and now staring with obvious hunger. As the first wolf leapt upon her, she swung her right hand now holding the gun upwards and managed to fire two shots off quickly, the first missing wildly while the second luckily taking the beast in the body and erupting in fire from the demonic enchantment, instantly killing it.
The body of the dead beast collided with her and she was thrown to the ground, just in time as the second wolf landed on its dead counterpart, narrowly avoiding damaging her. The brief fire that lit the dead wolf had no effect on her, but given the yelp from the other wolf it seemed to hurt others. She was still able to keep a hold on the gun through the collision, and quickly brought it around to unload two shots on this wolf that was now distracted. As it fell to the ground dead, the third wolf grabbed onto the arm that was holding the weapon, before ripping a chunk out of her forearm. With a gasp of pain she dropped the gun, and so with her other arm she reached to her side and grabbed the knife that lay on the ground next to her before wildly swinging it at the beast that was still chewing out pieces of her arm. With a resounding thud, the blade sunk inside its hide and the third beast let out a howl of pain before it collapsed as the demonic energy quickly tore around inside it.
You have levelled up.
She breathed out a sigh of relief, but before the adrenaline had even faded, she heard another howl nearby.
Accompanied by several more.
