The tapestry was nearing completion. There was no feeling associated with this observation, but if there had been, it would have been something approximating immense relief. There were still major flaws, however, and it was impossible to predict when they would be purged. It was the very nature of the effort to complete the tapestry that ensured this impossibility. Even a minor flaw could end up being a bottleneck that permanently prevented all future advancement. Nevertheless, there continued to be progress.

If a major breakthrough occurs before the first fundamental deadline, then the number of chances at ultimate success will be higher. That was all that could be said. Simply the number of chances. Not any sort of probability, since that would violate the principles upon which the tapestry was based. But even if the first fundamental deadline passed, there would still be many, many chances. Until the second fundamental deadline, there would be hope.
