1.3 - Bloodied Future

“Looks like they’ve finally found me…”

Double-Zero looked upon the group of soldiers from her vantage point with a cold gaze and an analytical eye as she came up with a plan. She had outran the Agency's forces for about a week now, but they finally had caught up with her. Right now they were at the abandoned apartment building, with Double-Zero observing the soldiers from holes in the vents as the containment unit moved through the halls in a closed pack formation. This group seemed average at best, but what took her interest the most were the three lone figures standing in the very back of the group.

“Pseudo-agents… interesting…” she muttered as she reached into her bag. She could tell from the cross-marks on their masks that they were not fully fledged agents. A mark of failure as she was told by her former handler. She could easily deal with the containment unit, but eliminating the pseudo-agents could be a problem. One was armed with a stun baton while the other two had swords similar to her own.

By sending pseudo-agents and common soldiers, Double-Zero could tell that the Agency seemed to be taking her escape cautiously rather than going full force. It gave her a small peace of mind that she wouldn’t have to go up against another agent.

At least for the time being.

Double-Zero pulled out a small cylinder from the bag and held it close as she stalked the soldiers from above. She was trained to be self-sufficient in the field, so creating things like pipe bombs and other homemade weapons were second nature. She was trained to be the model assassin and her agent abilities allowed her to be an adept in her craft.

The unit eventually came to a stop inside a large open room, and she decided now was the time to go on the offensive. She activated the pipe bomb and dropped it on the unsuspecting soldiers through the cracks in the vent. After a few seconds the bomb went off and the soldiers were thrown around the room by the power of the blast.

She jumped down and quickly advanced at the dazed soldiers with her blade drawn. Double-Zero cut one of them down before they could even raise their rifle. As their lifeless body fell to the ground she kicked another one of them against a nearby wall. With the man stunned she sunk her blade through his chest with relative ease. Double-Zero pulled the sword out of the body and turned to the other soldiers and readied herself.

She charged at them and after eliminating a few other soldiers, Double-Zero flipped her body in the air to avoid an oncoming barrage of bullets from behind. As she floated in the air Double-Zero pressed her feet against one of the pillars in the middle of the room and pushed herself away from the gunmen. Double-Zero landed nearby and fled into the shadows so she could analyze the situation.

“Fuck! Is everyone alright?!” she heard one of them yell out. With her advanced vision Double-Zero could partially see through the darkness. A few of them ran over to their fallen comrades while the three pseudo-agents remained oddly silent in the background.

“Strange… why didn't they attack?” quitely pondered Double-Zero as she focused on the pseudo-agents. She could only guess that they were conserving their energy for when they calculated what would be the best moment to attack her.

“We got multiple KIA, everyone else seems fine sir!” she heard another reply. From where Double-Zero was, she could see there were at least a dozen soldiers on top of the pseudo-agents remaining. Double-Zero only had a single grenade left and a few shivs she made from spare rebar. The thought of using her agent powers crossed her mind, but she wanted to keep them available for when she took on the pseudo-agents.

She needed to split them up.

Looking around she saw a nearby exit that would take her to the maintenance shafts. There she could separate and eliminate them one by one and allow her to conserve energy. Double-Zero surmised that this would be far from the last battle with the Agency, so she didn’t want to use up all her strength just yet.

Double-Zero sprinted towards the door just loud enough to get their attention. She dodged the oncoming bullets that went her way with ease as she sped down the hallway with immense speed. With the containment unit closing in she led them into the depths of the desolate tunnels with determination.

“I’ll fight for my freedom… I won’t give it up… no matter what...”
