Prologue, Chapter One

Prologue

In a dark library, the midnight hour now struck. A silvery serpentine smoke shining brightly in the dark midnight gloom, was moving stealthily between the stacks. The thing is known as a "Book Dweller" they are born when a person passes away who loves the written word. They are mostly made up of the condensed imagination and the memories of an avid reader or writer. This one belonged to a seventeen year old girl who passed away suddenly. The book dweller can not survive long in our world and because of this seek out a book world to take up residence. Because they retain a great deal of their former selves memories the majority of them find a book they are familiar with. This one is no exception. She slivers her way through the air between the stacks until she finds the book she is searching for. The book is the first of the harry potter series of books "Harry potter and the philosopher's stone". As she enters the book, the darkened library flashes a brilliant light as the book begins to glow. After the light settles down she has now made this book here new body. She will live out her life inside the book now having taking over the mind of a person she deems suitable.

Chapter One

The girl wakes up in the body of a small child. When a book dweller takes over the body of a character their consciousness combines and almost becomes a composite of both people. They retain the memories of their prior existence as a book dweller while simultaneously retaining any memories and emotional responses of the character they have become. The book dweller had been successful and became a character known as Penelope Partridge. The character is as far away from a main character as you could possibly get. She is what one would call an extra if it was in a film or TV. She is just there in the background unknown by the main characters, so unknown in fact that she is destined to die in the final book unnamed as one of the fallen fifty with no main character or reader to mourn her death. Penelope is a half blood witch her Father being a wizard by the name of Peter, her mother sadly was killed by death eater not long after birth for simply being a Muggle. Their family almost entirely has curly brown hair and brown eyes. For the most part though Penelope looks more like her deceased mother with her slender face and button nose. Penny gets out of bed and walks down stairs. Her Father is already awake and reading the Daily Prophet. On the front page is a story about an infestation of pixies that caused havoc in a specific ministry office. Penny says "good morning" to her Father as he looks up from his paper. His eyes seem to shine as he looks at his adorable daughter "Good morning dear. Did you sleep well?" he asked. The book dweller has assumed all of Penny's memories so she is more than familiar with the people Penny knew. She replies "Yes Father, looks like you have a busy day ahead of you" as she gestures to the front page. Her Father sighs. He is a low-level ministry employee that the muggles would realistically call a glorified janitor. He is in charge of the elf elves that deal with the day-to-day chores that keep the ministry building clean. "Yeah it seems some dope had brought in a breed of pixie from america which is a highly invasive species. lets just hope it doesn't get out into the wild otherwise the Cornish pixies may end up in conflict with them and it may become visible to Muggles". Her Father waved his wand as Penny sat down. A dish in the cupboard floated over and placed itself before Penny. The saucepan from the kitchen floated by and began pouring a strange purple coloured porridge into her dish. Penny picked up her spoon and began eating. It was a sweet tasting but otherwise inexpensive breakfast that is common in families that are not That well off in the Wizarding world. With every spoonful of porridge Penny felt a heat that spread from her stomach all the way to her fingers and toes. Before long the heat began to be exhaled out of her nose as flames almost like she was a dragon. It is because of this effect that the box the porridge comes in has the image of a Norwegian ridge-back dragon. The porridge certainly wakes one up is what Penny though. As she continued eating her breakfast an own flew in through the window. Its beautiful brown feathers looked so soft Penny almost stroked it on impulse. The owl was carrying an envelope addressed to.

"Miss Penelope Partridge

34 Oakville gardens

West Sussex

BN18 9Ab"

It was written in beautiful green ink with amazing penmanship. Penny quickly tore open the wax seal to quickly read

Penny was jumping for joy. She was well aware she would get into Hogwarts as she chose taking over this character specifically for this reason but the joy of actually getting the letter was real none the less. Her Father was beaming with pride. He immediately set to write their reply and send it out immediately. The two were so excited they bounced around the table. Penny's Father immediately made plans to take Penny to Diagon alley on his free day from work in order to purchase her supplies.

The day came on the weekend when Penny and her Father traveled via Floo Powder to leaky cauldron. The dark and ancient looking building was filled with people in robes of various colours. Her Father noticed a large man with a huge bushy beard and unkempt hair "Hello Hagrid" he said to the enormous and intimidating man. As soon as the person eyes fell upon them though the intimidating air was almost like a lie. He smiled behind his huge beard and his face conveyed a kindness at odds with the previous intimidating aura. "Hello there Pete, haven't seen you in ages" Hagrid cheerfully spoke before finishing off his drink in one gulp. "This must be li'l' Penny. Jeez I haven' seen you since you were a baby" Hagrid began patting her head in a friendly enough manner but with his size and strength Penny struggle to not fall over. "That's right Hagrid, She's just been accepted into Hogwarts we're on our way to buy her school supplies" her Father said proudly. Hagrid smiled even brighter after hearing that, He began rummaging in his coat pocket at the news. "Is that so, Guess the li'l' lady will need a present of some kind as a congratulations" Hagrid pulled out a tiny little egg that seemed like a grain of rice in Hagrids huge hand. He then handed it over to Penny, the egg was a strange mixture of colours that reflected almost like a rainbow. "Keep that warm and it should hatch by the time your ready to start at school I reckon" said Hagrid. Her Father smiled wryly as he was more than aware of Hagrid's penchant for strange and exotic animals. "Hope it's nothing too dangerous" said Peter. Hagrid chuckles his huge shoulder shaking up and down as he laughs "Nah nothin' dangerous Pete, Just a rare bird egg I got from a fella down the pub las' week". Pete took Hagrid at his word and seems relieved, as far as Hagrid goes that seems to be as harmless as he could get. Penny held the egg gently to her chest with a huge smile "Thank you Hagrid" she said. Hagrid seemed to be rather happy but embarrassed as he began scratching his main of unkempt hair. "No worries just take care o' it okay. Those birds can take up t' several years t' hatch" Hagrid said. After a little more talk a small owl delivered a letter to Hagrid. Hagrid gave the small owl a treat and retrieved the letter. Hagrid's eyes grew wide as he read it followed by an angry "bloody stupid Dursley's". Sorry Pete can't stop to talk Dumbledore just gave me an important job to do, I have to go pick someone up". They said their goodbyes as Hagrid left.

Penny and her Father made their way into Diagon alley. Penny watched as people were busily moving here and there. The first thing they did was make their way to the Wizarding bank called Gringotts. Penny had been here a few times with her Father before but that still didn't stop he being in awe of her surroundings. The room was made of completely white marble that seemed to reflect the light and make the already large place seem even larger. The large desks that the tiny goblins sat behind seemed to be more about goblin superiority and looking down at their customers rather than functionality. Peter took out a key and asked to be taken to his vault. A small little goblin with pale skin and big ears that curl at the end and a pointy crooked nose took them to the side. Unlike the vaults of famous wizarding families or those of the wealthy the Partridge vault is only a small room that doesn't even require going on the cable car system. "Vault number 24" the squeaky little voice of the goblin said. Peter handed his key over to the goblin who then opened the vault for him. Inside was a small pile of silver coins a slightly larger pile of bronze coins and five or six golden coins. This is the entire savings of her Father who has worked tirelessly since her Mother was killed to provide for his daughter. Peter earns a little less than someone like Arthur Weasley but as his expenses are far lower only having to support himself and his only daughter he has managed to save up a moderate amount of money. Penny felt a degree of pride in her Father. Peter took the six gold coin known as a Galleon, a handful of the silver Sickles and some of the bronze coins for good measure. They then left the vault behind after making sure it was locked and the goblin gave them the key back. After exiting the bank the first thing they did was go and get Penny measured for her robes. The place they went to was none other than "Madam Malkin's Robes for All Occasions". The owner is a short witch dressed in mauve snow-white hair. "Welcome" she said with a friendly air than makes you feel as though you just walked home. The witch walks over and talks to Peter for a while who explains that his daughter is due to start at Hogwarts so requires her robes. Madam Malkin urges Penny to stand still while she takes several measurements. The woman worked with such skill that Penny was awestruck. Peter handed over the required payment and received his change in the form of several bronze coins known as a Knut. Madam Malkin proceeded to get to work immediately after writing all the measurements down. She urged Peter and Penny to come back a little while later for the completed set.

Stolen story; please report.

Peter then walked his daughter over to Ollivanders the greatest wand maker in Britain. The shop had an almost reverential feel to it. The door rang as they entered as the elderly man poked his head around from behind the counter. "Ah Peter Partridge, 12" holly unicorn hair. Nice to see you again. and to what do I owe the pleasure". He asked even though he is well aware. Peter explained that its his daughter who needs a wand due to being accepted into Hogwarts. Ollivander stared knowingly at the small girl who was busily looking around intrigued by everything. Penny seemed to be intensely interested in wands and their craftsmanship. She was looking at all the display wands trying to guess their materials. "Are you a fan of wands Miss Partridge?" said Ollivander as his voice no louder than a whisper brought her back to her senses. Penny nodded "I read a book once about simple wand maintenance and have been intrigued ever since". Ollivander seemed to be rather happy with her response. He loves the mysteries and intricacies of wand-lore and it seems he has found a kindred spirit. "Very well then Miss Partridge. Lets see what wand suits you shall we. But I must tell you the wand chooses the witch or wizard not the other way around". Penny nods in agreement. Ollivander disappears behind the counter. He stands on a step-ladder to reach for a wand at the very top of one set of stacks. "Lets see here 10" oak and unicorn hair" Ollivander hands over the wand. Penny gives it a wave and several stacks are knocked over "nope" said Ollivander as he hurriedly took the wand back. He then goes over to another stack of wands. The one he brings over is recognized immediately by Penny. " 11" holly and phoenix feather" Ollivander handed this wand over, as soon as it was in Penny's hands it almost jumped right out on its own accord. Penny didn't take it personally though as she knew it was waiting for Harry the main character of the book she was dwelling in. A book dweller could overwrite the story and make certain things happen to their will but that has unexpected consequences and can destabilize the book world they choose to live in and can potentially cause harm to the book dweller. Penny deciding to let it go and keep going until she finds the wand that the unknown Penny was supposed to find. The people in the shop kept going for what felt like forever. Ollivanders personal motto of finding the perfect wand for the witch or wizard was being highly tested on this day. Finally a flash of inspiration dawns upon Ollivanders face. "Well then maybe it's not a wand of my making you require" he says before shuffling off to the back room. When he comes back he is holding a beautifully carved wand. "A friend of mine from america sent me this one as a trade, since I have learned a lot about it I would be willing to give it to you. It is 11" made of snake-wood tree and has a horned serpent horn core". No soon as Penny held the wand it sent a warm sparking feeling throughout her hand and it felt as though all the magic power locked within her was set free. Ollivander looked pleased with the result and said "That wand was made by the wand smiths at Ilvermorny. A friend of mine who apprenticed with me under my Father made that wand". Penny was in awe at the wand she was holding it felt as though it was perfectly made for her. Her fingers gently grasped it as she held it up to the light enjoying every small carving along its handle. It almost looked scale like in its design. Peter having gotten up goes over the payment of the wand. As every Ollivander wand costs no less than seven Galleons obviously Peter not having enough to buy it outright has to write his Gringotts account down and let Ollivander make a mold of his key. By doing this Peter will pay back Ollivander over several installments with a slight interest. Luckily Hogwarts offers a voucher for its poorer students that pays a percentage of the cost so it doesn't cost as much as it would. In fact they offer two types of voucher one that covers a percentage and another that pays it outright. Voldemort having no money of his own had his wand purchased in this method. This is the common way most wizards pay for their wands who aren't from rich families. The only other alternative is going to a shop that sells second-hand wands but students who have to resort to such rarely get satisfactory results. Penny and her Father having completed the task of finding her wand head out after saying their goodbyes to Mr Ollivander.

----------------------------------------

The next stop was at Flourish and Blotts where they purchase her required reading material for the upcoming term. Luckily no real issues happened in there and they got the books at a discount given they owe her Father a favour for some reason. They got in and out in pretty quick time giving their thanks as they exited. Following the required materials they brought the equipment and ingredients for potions class and the rest of her school needs such as telescope and scales. Peter seemed to know all the places they could purchase most the stuff needed on the cheap or second-hand but it didn't seem to matter to Penny. Because of this the two finished up relatively quickly. They decided to stop for something to eat at Rosa Lee Teabag the well-known tea house. It was a bit expensive but as a treat for his daughter Peter took them in. They had a few confectionaries and some tea as they enjoyed a little bit of rest. Peter then said he had to pop into the junk shop as he heard about something in there from a friend at work. Knowing it wouldn't be all that entertaining so he gave Penny a few Knut's and a Sickle and told her she could go buy herself something. Just before separating though he warned her "don't go down Nocturn alley though okay sweetheart" Penny nodded and headed into the second hand bookshop. Penny decides to buy second hand books that are usually for the later years at Hogwarts. She buys a rather worn out and ragged Standard Book of Spells volume two, three, and four. Penny being an avid reader since she was a child combined with a book dwellers ability to instantly memorize anything they read at once makes learning these convinces relatively easy. Penny to also pick up a few spell, charm, and counter curse books that aren't on the school reading list. She has done this because with the book dwellers knowledge that she won't survive the battle of Hogwarts unless she prepares herself. She intends to learn enough to become powerful enough to ensure her own survival. Unlike if a Book dweller uses their power to overwrite the plot, if they make small innocuous changes it will not cause their new book world to fall to ruin and won't cause any harm to themselves. Finishing up buying what she wanted to buy she headed back to meet up with her Father who it would seem had purchased an old rusted door knocker in the shape of a lion. As Penny looked closer she could see the eyes of the door knocker moving. It seems her Father plans on placing this on the door of their modest home. Now that everything has been taken care of the two head home for the evening.

----------------------------------------

The Home of Penny and her Father is a small two bedroom house built as a semi-detached. The home is in a part of west Sussex that is occupied completely by wizards. Because of this some houses have incredibly bright and unusual paint jobs. There is even one with a yellow polka dot pattern painted. Penny and her Father's home is a relatively subdued greenish colour in comparison. The most distinguishing characteristic would be the almost Gothic style decorations adorning the house. This seems to stem from her Father's sense of ascetic. No doubt the new enchanted door knocker is purchased to further enhance the style that her Father is going for. The two enter their home and Peter immediately begins cleaning up the rusted door knocker while Penny begins reading the first edition of the Standard Book of Spells. With just a few glances over each page Penny was committing each word to memory. As soon as her Father calls her for her evening meal Penny has already memorized the first quarter of all the spells in the first volume of standard book of spells. The house has many second-hand books in her Fathers collection it would seem that he was a Ravenclaw during his time in Hogwarts and passed up on a lucrative job post graduation working for a pure-blood supremacist wizard because he was initially dating Penny's none magical Mother. Because of that wizards influence her Father has failed to find work that reflect his skills and intelligence to this day but he seems to not care all that much given how much he doted on his daughter. The meal the two shared was relatively peaceful with the two talking about spells that appear within the first standard book of spells. Peter gave his daughter some helpful hints and tips including a few alterations he personally discovered that increase the effects of certain spells. Peter had several spell books from his time at Hogwarts that he altered in much the same way Snape did with his potions books. Peter decides to give these to his precious daughter in order to encourage her love of spell craft. The two quietly cleaned away their washed dishes after their meal both deep in though. Peter was thinking how lonely the house will become when Penny heads off to Hogwarts, and Penny was contemplating the future of the character and how she intends to avoid the fate of dying unknown.
