The Adoption

Memory transcript subject: Lani, Venlil mother and gardener Date: [standardized human time] October 19th,2136

I parked my vehicle near the facility. I exited my car and headed to the entrance. This facility had been recently repurposed and is still in progress.

I entered the building and headed toward the front desk. I saw a Zurulian with a UN hat.

“Hello welcome to the Dawn Creek refugee center how may I help you?” I pulled out some papers from my bag.

“I was wondering about the UN adoption initiative?” The Zurulian reached down and put a paper on the desk and I handed her my papers.

I talked with Vila the last paw. After a bit of talking she agreed to it. However, for her safety, I’m having her live with Marlik for a couple of paws until I feel she is ready.

I looked over the paper I was handed. It went over what I needed to do. Every once in a while a UN representative would check up on how things were going.

“The papers look good… follow Doctor Polim. He’ll show you to the refugees” I was handed back my papers and a Zurulian doctor went up to me.

We walked towards one of the hallways where a Venlil soldier inspected my bag to make sure I wasn’t hiding anything.

“Alright, this way” I saw through one of the doorways a giant Venlil entertaining some humans.

We arrived at this area where I saw many rooms with human children and teens.

“So tell me what made you want to adopt a human?” We walked past the many rooms. I saw siblings holding each other

“Well I just felt awful and I wanted to help in some way” We were walking by rooms when I stopped and stared at this one human. He sat there on a bed holding this orange blanket.

“Oh you seem interested” the Zurulian doctor stood by me staring at the human.

“May I see about this one?” I pointed my tail and looked down at the Zurulian. The doctor pulled out a pad and typed something in before leading me down the hall. We entered a room and sat me down on this chair.

“In a bit, they’ll arrive here with the human but in the meantime, I wanna explain to you about this human” She pulled out something on her pad. It looked like an info page on the human.

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen from Royal Road. Please report it.

“So the human you were looking at is Chris Evans. He is 15 years old and has a condition known as autism” My ears perked up.

“What’s autism?” Doctor Polim looked up from her pad. She went to some notes and a website that looked human. It had some weird square-like shape with some bumps and indents around it.

“Well I’ve done a little research on it when information became available so here’s what I can tell you” The doctor took a breath. “According to humans, it’s a neurological disorder that affects the brain in different ways”

“Like how?” Polim scrolled further down on her pad. There was some weird graph next to the words.

“Well for some they may have a hard time understanding social cues. They also may be sensitive to too much stuff happening and they might feel overwhelmed” Polim scrolled further down. “ some other things are that they may like to keep to a schedule and may not like it when things change” I was a bit confused. Was that all?

“So every human who has autism is like this?” The doctor stared at me for a second before shaking her head.

“Not exactly… it’s more varied and is more like a spectrum with some people experiencing more of one thing than the others” Polim was going to say something when the door opened and a Venlil walked in.

“Alright, here he is” I watched as the human walked in and took a seat on a chair. He held the orange blanket close to him. He had bags under his eyes and his hair looked dirty.

“Hello, my name is Lani and you must be Chris?” Chris looked up from his blanket and towards me.

“Y-yeah….. hi L-Lani” he looked incredibly sad.

“I was looking into….” How should I word this? I don’t want to come off as threatening or rude. “I was wondering if you would be ok with living with me and my family?” Chris looked up at me. He was thinking to himself.

“…..sure I guess” Chris went back to staring at the small orange blanket. I turned back to Doctor Polim.

“Alright I’ll go get the paperwork and you two can talk to each other” Polim got up from her chair and walked out the door.

We were waiting when I decided to strike up a conversation with Chris.

“So Chris….?” I looked closer at the blanket. Its color was kind of like Venlil blood. There were also multiple cartoonish animal heads on it. “What is that?” I pointed at his blanket.

He looked up at me with his sad eyes. He held the blanket close to his chest.

“I-it’s something I had since I was a child…. My mother gave it to me when I was born and grandpa did the same for her …… my mom…. She…..” I could see tears start to form under his eyes. He put the blanket to his face and started to cry audibly. I panicked and wrapped my tail around his arm. He looked up at me for a second before wiping the tears with his hand.

“I’m sorry Chris I didn’t mean to upset you” Chris then looked at me. His eyes were wide with despair.

“N-no it’s fine I just…” Chris sniffled a bit and then just went quiet. I tried comforting Chris by keeping my tail around his arm.

It was then Doctor Polim came back into the room with the papers. She handed me to them on a clipboard and also gave me a pen. The pen looked like a Fissan design but with parts of a human pen.

“Alright, so this is for the adoption of Chris and also an agreement to make sure he stays safe and cared for. Also, I have to tell you that Chris will need to get enlisted into a school at some point as it is required by the UN” I nodded and looked down at the paper. I read it over and then signed it. Everything looked good. I handed back the papers to Polim. “Also I have to mention that in a couple of human days or a couple of paws the rest of Chris’s belongings will arrive. So just be prepared for a couple of packages to arrive soon” I nodded and we all got up and headed back to where Chris was originally to grab his bag and the couple of belongings he had with him.

He grabbed his bag and walked with me. I had my tail around his arm so he could feel safe. As we exited the building went towards my car. I opened the passenger door and Chris placed his bag on the seats. I then walked him over to his side of the car and he went in holding his blanket close to himself.

I got in the car and started the engine. I drove away from the center and back home to our little town of Flowerfield.

Chris looked out of the window at the fields of flowers. All the different colors and shades. There were even some little bugs flying around.

Soon enough we arrived home and I parked the car in the driveway. I exited the car and grabbed Chris’s bag and then headed to his side of the car and helped him out. Wrapping my tail around his arm I walked him into my house and the living room. He sat on the couch and I put his bag next to him.

“Hey Chris is it ok if I make something for you?” Chris just looked up at me.

“S-sure… I’m just gonna sleep for a bit….” I gave a tail flick as Chris pulled out a pillow and a bigger blanket. He laid down and covered himself as I headed to the kitchen to make something for him.

I hope he likes Lyrifa.
