THE moon was full and at its peak.
Nothing good ever happened at this time.
Vanessa sat at the edge of the top of a building. Her legs dangled at the sides of the building as she took in the feel of the night. She loved it. There was something about it that called to her. Unfortunately, she wasn’t out here for just the night. She was a hunter tonight, and her prey was a teenage couple.
The couple, a tall blonde kid and his blonde cheerleader girlfriend were having a very weird conversation with a young boy that looked like he was a bit younger than them. The couple flanked the boy on each side. Normal people would barely hear anything. But Vanessa was far from normal.
Vanessa had been tracking them for days now, the blonde kid especially. Josh Kallan was like a cliché pulled out of a high school movie. Rich parents, on the high school basketball team, dating a cheerleader… the whole starter pack for being a cliché high school jock. Except Josh Kallan wasn’t Josh Kallan anymore. She was here to fix that. And more.
“Come on Cameron, it’s just a one-time thing. Don’t you want to have fun with a cheerleader?” Josh said leaning into the kid Vanessa guessed was Cameron.
“No thank you I just want to get home in time for dinner. My dad would be kind of worried” Cameron laughed nervously and pressed his back to the wall. He looked like he was praying for the wall to open up and swallow him.
“Come, Cameron, I won’t bite,” The Cheerleader said and bared her fangs at him. Cameron froze in fear. The boy had probably sent gallons of pee down his pants seeing his first Vampire. Vanessa knew it was her queue.
She sighed and leaped off the side of the six-story building she was sitting on. She landed right in the middle of the commotion and put herself between Cameron and the couple. “Nice night huh?”
Startled, the couple leaped back in unison. “I’m not even going to bother asking who the fuck you are, because I don’t care. But this is our turf and if you don’t want to end up dead, you’ll get out of the way and let my baby have her first meal” Josh threatened.

So he knew she wasn’t human. Well, they could always tell.
Vanessa glanced at The Cheerleader and cursed. Guess she was too late to save this one. The cheerleader had red eyes and her fangs were short. Symptoms of a newborn.
She sighed. “Well, I can’t let you do that Josh” His smile disappeared at the mention of his name. “But I will let your girlfriend live if you just tell me where your sentinel is” She added a smile. She could feel Cameron trembling with fear behind her. Her guess was right. He had soiled himself.
“Ok, who the fuck are you and how do you...” he didn’t finish his sentence when His girlfriend lounged at Vanessa. Vanessa sighed. She was hoping this time she wouldn’t have to rip someone apart. But same old same old.
As the young vampire closed the distance between them with supernatural speed, Vanessa used the back of her hand to slap her. The Cheerleader was sent flying into a nearby car that got smashed on impact.
Vanessa looked back at Cameron, who looked like he would die from fear. “Run,” she said with a smile. It didn’t take him five minutes to reach the end of the block and he disappeared. Fear was always good motivation.
“Ok, who the fuck do you think you are?” Josh said with anger. He bared his fangs and lounged at Vanessa. She lounged too. A lot faster than him. She caught him by the head and slammed him into the pavement causing it to crack. She picked him up again and repeated the process until there was a mini crater in the ground. By the time she looked at his face, it reminded her of squashed pizza and lasagna mushed together and buried in ketchup. Yeah, it was that bad.
“I’m going to ask you again Josh. Where is your…” she reacted before she felt it. She caught the cheerleader’s hand mid-attack and slammed her into the pavement. She looked at Josh amused “Where did you find this chick. She got spunk” and kicked her into the same car she had previously smashed.
“De…li…a” Josh muttered through her hands on his face.
“Hmm, Delia. Nice name. Here’s the thing Josh. I need to know where your sentinel is and I’m really not that patient” She let go of his face and his very weak body fell to the ground like a rag doll. He moaned in pain. He couldn’t even move. Damn, maybe she had gone overboard. She always went overboard. She was running out of time. Very soon the pesky silvers would be here. She could feel them closing in. She could hear them even. She didn’t want a confrontation. Guess she didn’t have a choice.
“Do me a favor Josh,” she bit his neck and marked him. “Please survive.”
“Let go of him!” Delia screamed and threw the now-destroyed car at Vanessa. For a newborn, Delia wasn’t half bad. She dropped Josh and caught the car with one hand. Before she could drop it she felt the impact of Delia’s kick, but she didn’t even flinch. When she dropped the car, Delia was nowhere to be seen, and so was Josh’s body.
Good. She was smart enough to know Vanessa was out of her league. But she was also going to lead Vanessa right to their Sentinel.
