Chapter 7: The Decayed Forest

Chapter 7: The Decayed Forest

An unnerving tingle ran down Arthur’s back and his cheek got cut, blood trickled down his face yet he didn’t notice it as he was focused on trying to dodge the predator that hunted him.

The wailing of women and children echoed in the fleshy forest surrounding Arthur, he ducked and the tree behind him was split in half.

Damn it, how much longer?

The predator hunting him was invisible, Arthur could only live as long as he did with the sounds of the forest’s cries.

A distorted scream of a man came from behind Arthur and he rolled to the side, the spot where he stood was crushed under a large handprint.

The laughter of a woman came from below Arthur.

Shit, what was this one?

Arthur couldn’t waste time thinking about it and instead swung his sword horizontally, the entire forest wailed with the distorted voices of children and a long pale hand fell to the ground.

It had 4 long fingers and on the end of each finger were sharp talons like a bird’s.

The forest went quiet.

A relieved sigh escaped from Arthur’s lips as he thought it had run away. But, he was very wrong. The forest hissed like a cat and the trees wriggled before retracting into the ground.

Arthur now stood in an open field with the fleshy ground of the dead forest underneath him squelching under his boots.

The ground shook and the forest around the field screamed in agony, the predator was now revealed.

It was massive, its body looked like a pale disfigured human and the head was that of a corvid. It walked on 6 eerily long arms, one of which was now missing a hand.

The monster let out a series of aggressive caws and lunged toward Arthur.

He dodged to the side and ran his blade through its side. It was bleeding out fast.

The monster went mad and started stomping on the ground with all its strength and arms reached out of the ground to pull it in.

Arthur could only feel the muscles of the ground under him shifting and the forest was laughing, it felt wrong. It felt sickening. The laughing sent a chill down his spine and the ground opened up from where the monster was taken.

A blurred figure flew out of the hole and now hid somewhere in the night sky above Arthur.

The laughing got louder and louder with the voices of the dead becoming even more distorted.

Before he could react to the movement that his eyes saw, Arthur was pinned to the ground as the monster slammed down onto him.

Arthur was glad for a brief moment, he didn’t use his stat points to upgrade his health for nothing. Still, that dealt a heavy blow to him and he had to get out from under the monster.

He grabbed the second sword in his inventory and stabbed the monster before rolling out from under it and leaving the sword embedded inside the monster’s waist.

Arthur could now have a full look at the creature and what it had become.

The 6 arms it had before turned into a pair of arms and legs, its arms had sharp blades made of bone protruding from them, and its back now had a pair of long black feathered wings, it also grew a spiky tail with a barb on the tip.

A choked caw came from the monster and a saliva-covered ball came out of its beak.

What the hell is that?

The ball burst and inside was a small clone of the monster.

“Seriously?” Arthur already had enough to deal with and now there were two of them.

He pulled out his crossbow and shot a bolt at the tiny creature’s head, “Don’t try making this harder for me, you’re just a big messed-up crow.”

The forest laughed and the monster cawed at Arthur.

“Oh, was that funny huh? Then how about this?” Arthur loaded another bolt and shot it toward the monster’s eye but missed, “Damn it!”

The forest let out yet another eerie laugh that made the ground shake.

His hand reached for the pocket on his waist and searched for a bolt and realised that he was out of bolts.

Damn it, I should have gotten more bolts.

Arthur’s eyes wandered around, looking for what else he could use to stay alive for even just a little longer but there was absolutely nothing besides the field, if he attempted to run toward the forest then the monster would follow in pursuit and kill him from behind.

Im so screwed

Arthur was scared. He was alone in this terrifying and disturbing forest and was facing a boss all alone.

Again

Arthur sharply inhaled and gripped his sword tight.

On this fleshy field, only two figures faced each other. Arthur and the boss.

There was no one to help, no one to distract them, no one to witness what was happening.

Arthur charged forward and blocked an incoming attack with his sword, then he dodged to the side and cut into the monster’s arm with his sword. It seemed that the monster’s skin got tougher when it changed the 6 limbs for the pair.

He pulled his sword from the monster’s arm and jumped back, the monster shot its tail toward Arthur and tried to sting him. Right before it hit him, he shielded against the attack by using the crossbow to block the tip and the crossbow broke in the process.

“I can’t get stung by that at all cost,” he told himself.

The monster did not stop its pursuit of attacks and swung one of its arms at Arthur.

He tilted his blade and once the monster’s arm hit the sword, Arthur directed the arm away using its own force.

[Parry unlocked!]

Arthur smiled and looked into the monster’s eyes, he then taunted it.

The monster lunged at Arthur and he rolled to the side, this time the tail came again and he parried it, afterwards spinning his body and using the force it created to cleave right through the tail.

The monster made a grating screech and clicked its beak in repeating sequences.

The forest laughed, cried, screamed and then it went quiet.

“What are you-” Arthur couldn’t finish his sentence and was sent flying across the field

All of his limbs were broken and he was coughing up blood as he collided with a fleshy tree at the end of the field.

He tried to figure out what hit him but his vision was blurred and darkening.

Is this… it?

Arthur stared up at the moon. It was so pretty…

Sorry Sorin… I'm so sorry…

“-thur!”

“Arthur!”

He weakly looked to the side as he saw Alex and an entire army of players running toward him.

What the hell…
