Senshi hushed the group, the loud sounds outside the church drawing nearer. They exchanged tense glances before ducking behind the scattered pews. The silence hung heavy, broken only by the sound of shallow breathing.
Suddenly, Xerxes' trembling hands betrayed him, and his sword clattered to the floor with a deafening clang. The noise echoed through the church, and in an instant, a terrifying scream pierced the air, rushing toward the entrance.
Xerxes scrambled to pick up his sword, his heart pounding as he looked at the others, who glared back at him in disbelief. Before anyone could react further, the church doors were shattered, splinters of wood flying across the room. A massive creature stomped through the wreckage—its left arm grotesquely elongated, ending in a head-shaped fist. Jagged mouths covered its body, each lined with sharp, pointed teeth. Its blind eyes were offset by enormous ears, twitching as they tracked every sound. Its ragged pants hung loosely, adding to its twisted form.
“M-Mirabelle,” Madame Red whispered, her voice barely audible, but Daeron and Daenerys, standing at her side, heard her. Their faces mirrored her fear as they gazed at the monstrosity now standing in the center of the church.
Senshi tapped Xerxes on the shoulder, signaling him to act. Xerxes fumbled inside his pack and slowly pulled out a carrot. Senshi gave a firm nod of approval, then signaled the others, pointing toward the bookshelf concealing the dungeon's entrance.
The plan was clear: make a run for it while Mirabelle was distracted.
Senshi glanced back at Xerxes, giving him one final nod. Xerxes tightened his grip on the carrot, knowing this would be their only chance. In the eerie stillness, they prepared to move, praying the monstrous Mirabelle wouldn’t hear them.
Xerxes took a deep breath, steeling himself before hurling the carrot through one of the church’s stained glass windows. The glass shattered with a loud crash, drawing Mirabelle’s attention instantly. As the grotesque creature turned toward the noise, Dexie sprinted for the bookshelf, vanishing into the dungeon beyond. The rest of the group followed suit, creeping toward the exit as quickly and quietly as possible.
But halfway there, the faint sound of footsteps betrayed them. Mirabelle's head snapped toward Madame Red, Daeron, and Daenerys. Time seemed to slow as the creature bared its many teeth in a terrible snarl. Seeing no other option, Xerxes stepped out from his hiding spot, heart pounding but face set with determination.
"Over here, you big dumb creature!" he shouted, locking eyes with Mirabelle, hoping to draw her fury.
With a deafening scream, Mirabelle charged. Senshi, positioned nearby, dove out of the way, rolling across the floor toward the bookshelf. He landed in the center aisle, bracing for whatever came next. Mirabelle’s elongated arm swung down, aiming for Xerxes, but he narrowly dodged, dashing toward the front right corner of the room. The impact of her arm left a deep crater in the floor where he had stood moments before.
Amid the chaos, Madame Red and Daenerys slipped through the bookshelf into the dungeon. Daeron, thinking quickly, cast a sound spell that echoed from the far corner of the church, drawing Mirabelle’s attention. The creature paused, its ears twitching as it honed in on the new sound and lumbered away from Xerxes.
Senshi rolled out of Mirabelle's path and positioned himself near the dungeon entrance, ready to pull Xerxes through. Daeron caught Xerxes’ eye, signaling him to run. Xerxes nodded, sprinting for the bookshelf as fast as he could. On the other side, Dexie, Madame Red, and Daenerys pushed the bookshelf outward while Senshi, Daeron, and Xerxes pulled from the outside. The combined effort created a wide enough passage for everyone to squeeze through.
One by one, they tumbled into the dungeon, panting from the narrow escape. But just as they thought they were safe, the bookshelf groaned loudly, scraping across the stone floor. The sound echoed through the church, catching Mirabelle's attention once more. The creature let out another shriek and bolted toward them, its footsteps shaking the ground.
With one final push and pull, the group managed to slam the bookshelf shut just as Mirabelle reached the entrance. The creature pounded against the hidden door, but the group was safe—for now—huddled together in the dark confines of the dungeon, breathing heavily.
Xerxes wiped the sweat from his brow. “That... was too close.”
Senshi nodded. "But we made it. For now."
Daenerys, still gasping for air, glanced around at the group. “Can someone explain what just happened?”
Madame Red, her eyes distant and unfocused, stared blankly at the dungeon wall. “The creature’s name is Mirabelle,” she replied quietly, her voice laced with unease.
“It’s blind, but it has an uncanny sense of hearing,” Dexie added, leaning against the cold stone, his feline ears twitching as if still processing the danger they had barely escaped.
Xerxes slammed his fist against the wall, frustration evident in his voice. “That’s right. And we’re not getting out of here unless we find a way to kill it.”
Senshi, always the strategist, spoke up. “Unless... we can find another way out.” His gaze shifted to Madame Red and Dexie. “Is there anywhere in this dungeon you haven’t explored yet?”
Dexie nodded, wiping the sweat from his brow. “Yes. We didn’t check the middle staircase between the two hallways we passed earlier.”
Senshi considered this, his expression tense. “Then that’s where we go. We need to see if it leads anywhere—anywhere that gives us an advantage.”
Xerxes, still catching his breath, sighed heavily. “Or... we’ll be facing Mirabelle again.” His tone was grim, but determination flickered in his eyes.
The group shared a look, the weight of their situation settling over them. They had narrowly escaped death once, but the question now was whether they could outsmart the monster lurking just beyond the walls, or if they would have to face it head-on once more.
As the group ventured deeper into the dungeon, they descended the narrow staircase and reached a very large well-lit room.
Senshi was the first to break the silence. “Well, let’s hope this time we don’t stumble into something worse.”
As soon as Senshi finished his sentence, three undead wolves emerged from the shadows behind them, and two undead figures shambled toward them from the front.
Xerxes cracked his neck and grinned. “This is going to be easy!”
Senshi quickly took charge. “Xerxes, cover Daenerys from the wolves. I’ll take care of these undead.”
Xerxes nodded, charging at the wolves with his sword drawn. But just as he prepared to strike, a massive bonfire erupted in the middle of the wolves, stopping him in his tracks. Flames roared, scorching the fur and flesh of the creatures.

“Whoa!” Xerxes exclaimed, looking back at Daenerys, who stood calmly, her hand still crackling with residual fire magic.
She raised an eyebrow. “What? You thought I was weak?”
Xerxes smirked in response, turning back to the wolves just as they stepped out of the flames, their skin charred and peeling but still snarling.
“Alright,” Xerxes muttered, tightening his grip on his sword. “I’ll finish this.” With precise swings, he decapitated the wolves one by one, their bodies collapsing into the dust.
Meanwhile, Senshi was struggling with the two undead. “A little help here?” he called out, blocking a strike with his blade.
Daenerys began preparing another spell, but Xerxes dashed past her, cutting through one of the undead before it could land another blow on Senshi.
“Thanks,” Senshi muttered, pushing the last undead away and then slicing through its neck. The room fell silent as the two warriors caught their breath.
As Xerxes and Senshi catch their breath, the rest of the group investigates the room in which they see two alcoves that each hold a chest and lever from the east and west side of the room, and right at the center is a large sarcophagus with glowing runes around it. Daenerys then investigates the whole room and notices another, but, faint carvings of runes that are scattered from each wall. She then remembers that it is a binding rune when activated, holds someone in its place. “Careful, everyone! There are runes engraved on the walls, but they seem inactive for now.”
The group spread out, surveying the chamber. The floor was uneven, with stones randomly raised as if waiting to be triggered. At the far right, an iron cage stood ominously in the corner, but the contents were shrouded in shadow. Dexie, always curious, crouched to examine the loose stones more closely. Gently pressing one, he noticed a compartment in the ceiling started to shift.
“Everyone, be cautious,” Dexie warned. “These stones are connected to some kind of trap. I’ll check the alcoves one by one—stay here, and I’ll bring back whatever I find.”
Senshi nodded. “Sounds good. Just be careful.”
Dexie deftly navigated through the treacherous floor, avoiding the pressure plates. He reached the right alcove, where a heavy chest sat, its lid made of stone reinforced with metal. Next to it, a lever stuck out, seemingly jammed. With a careful tug, Dexie pulled the lever on top of the chest, causing the chest to creak open slightly. He pulled it further, fully revealing the contents—a shield, battered but intact, with scratches across its surface.
Dexie took the shield back to the group. “Look what I found. Does anyone recognize this?”
Madame Red examined the shield, her fingers lightly tracing its etchings. “If I’m not mistaken, this is the ‘Shield of the Guardian,’” she said. However, as she touched it, she felt a strange force pushing her away.
Daenerys squinted at the shield. “Hold on! It’s enchanted—probably a protective charm.”
Dexie glanced at Xerxes. “Here, you’re the most suited for this. Take it.”
Xerxes grinned. “Thanks!” He strapped the shield to his arm, feeling its weight and power immediately.
Without wasting time, Dexie dashed to the left alcove, repeating his careful maneuvers. He pulled the lever, and this time, the chest revealed a deep red amulet made of polished obsidian. Its surface was inscribed with glowing runes, and one symbol stood out to him—a ‘Rune of Life.’
He hurried back to the group, holding the amulet up. “I found this. Anyone know what it is?”
Madame Red leaned closer, her eyes widening. “That’s a powerful item. The Rune of Life can heal or revive—it’s rare, but we should handle it carefully.”
Dexie then stares back at Madame Red. “Here! You can have it! Plus, it suits you!”
Madame Red: “Much obliged”
As Dexie returned to the group, a sudden rattling echoed from the iron cage in the corner, as though something inside was straining to break free.
Dexie glanced at the group. “I’ll disarm the traps first. Then we can all explore together.”
Working carefully, Dexie disarmed the pressure plates, and as he did, the ceiling compartment creaked open, releasing a shower of useful items. Weapons, armor, and magical gear fell to the ground, and the group hurried to inspect the treasure.
Xerxes grinned wide. “Woah! What do we have here?”
Senshi shook his head in disbelief. “Thank God for this!” he said, grabbing a long-awaited piece of armor.
They each took what they needed:
Xerxes grabbed a Greataxe and Hide Armor, feeling the raw power of the weapon surge through him.
Dexie donned the Studded Leather Armor and slid the Rapier into his belt, feeling more agile and ready for battle.
Senshi claimed the Longsword and Chainmail, giving him both the protection and precision he craved.
Daenerys equipped the Wand of the War Mage and wrapped herself in a Cloak of Protection, the magical energy coursing through her fingers.
Madame Red quietly picked up a Quarterstaff, the simple yet powerful weapon suiting her.
Daeron claimed the Amulet of Health and the Instrument of the Bard, ready to support the group with both magic and music.
As they armed themselves with these newfound items, the cage rattled even louder, the sound of something inside growing more violent.
Madame Red cast a wary glance at the cage. “We better be ready. Whatever’s in there doesn’t sound happy.”
As the group cautiously approached the cage, they peered inside and saw a strange, blind, four-legged creature with a wide, gaping mouth. The creature seemed more afraid of them than they were of it.
Daenerys took a step closer, reaching out her hand, but the creature snapped at her, its jaws just missing her fingers.
“Tsk, that was close,” Daenerys muttered, pulling her hand back.
Xerxes stepped forward confidently. “Let me try.”
He stared the creature down with fierce determination. The creature hesitated for a moment, then lowered its head submissively in front of Xerxes. Senshi burst into laughter.
"That's great! Show it who's the alpha!" Senshi teased.
Madame Red shook her head. "That is not how you properly tame a creature."
Xerxes shrugged. "At least I tried."
He circled the cage, inspecting it, and noticed a lever on the side. Without hesitation, Xerxes pulled it, and the cage door swung open. He cautiously stepped forward again, but this time the creature surprised him by running around his legs, rubbing its body affectionately against his boots.
“Well, aren’t you cute?” Xerxes smiled. “I’m gonna call you—”
Before he could finish, the creature suddenly melted into the shadows at Xerxes’ feet, disappearing entirely.
Xerxes blinked in confusion. “What just happened?”
Daenerys smirked. “That creature is interdimensional. That’s why it can do that.”
Senshi clapped Xerxes on the back. “That’s great! Now we have two pets on our team!”
Dexie shot a glare at Senshi. “Hey! I’m not a pet!”
Dexie smirked. “Don’t worry, you’re still cute”
Madame Red rolled her eyes. “Alright, everyone. Let’s focus.”
Senshi glanced around the dimly lit room, frustration etched on his face. “Since there are no exits, we might as well head back to where we came from.”
Daeron frowned, his concern palpable. “But what if Mirabelle is waiting for us there?”
Dexie crossed his arms, uncertainty in his eyes. “And we still don’t know if we can handle Mirabelle with the gear we have.”
Madame Red took a deep breath, her resolve firm. “We have no choice.”
Daenerys hesitated, shaking her head. “I’m not going first.”
Xerxes stepped forward, confidence brimming. “Me and Senshi will lead.”
Senshi nodded in agreement. “Will do.”
With their roles established, the group cautiously made their way back to the staircase leading up to the church. Halfway through the room, a chilling shriek pierced the air, followed by a rumbling that shook the ground beneath them. The sudden noise startled them, and they instinctively stepped back, eyes wide with fear.
Then, as if in response to their anxiety, Mirabelle came crashing down the stairs, landing heavily on its face. The creature slowly rose, letting out another piercing shriek that echoed through the chamber, sending a jolt of panic through the group. They stood frozen, hearts racing, as Mirabelle loomed before them, ready to unleash its fury.
