Darkness

Chapter 1: Darkness

The sun dipped low behind the towering redwoods, casting eerie shadows that danced across the forest floor. Mark and his friends stood at the edge of the woods, a mix of excitement and dread coursing through them.

“Are we really doing this?” Lisa asked, her voice shaky. “I’ve heard the stories about this place. They say people disappear.”

“Come on, Lisa! Don’t be such a bitch,” Mark replied, rolling his eyes. “It’s just some stupid legend. We’ll be fine. Let’s have some fun!”

Jake chuckled, lighting a cigarette. “Yeah, what’s the worst that could happen? We’re not little kids anymore. It’s just a fucking forest.” He took a long drag, blowing the smoke into the crisp evening air.

“Seriously, though,” Lisa insisted, glancing at the thick canopy above. “I’m not sure we should go in there. It feels… wrong.”

“Stop being a coward, Lisa!” Mark snapped, frustration seeping into his tone. “We came here for a thrill, not to stand around like a bunch of scared asses. Let’s just go.”

With that, he stepped forward, pushing through the dense underbrush. The others hesitated but followed, drawn by curiosity and the thrill of the unknown.

As they ventured deeper into the woods, the atmosphere shifted. The air grew thick, heavy with an unshakable tension. Shadows loomed larger, and the sounds of the forest faded, leaving only the sound of their footsteps crunching on the fallen leaves.

“See? It’s not so bad,” Mark said, though his voice wavered slightly. But even he could feel the unsettling energy around them.

Suddenly, a twig snapped nearby, causing all of them to jump. “What the hell was that?” Jake asked, his bravado faltering.

“Probably just a deer,” Mark said, trying to sound confident. But deep down, he felt a knot tightening in his stomach.

They pressed on, deeper into the darkness. As the last rays of sunlight disappeared, an unnatural chill settled over the group. It was as if the woods were alive, watching them with unseen eyes.

“Guys, I really don’t like this,” Lisa whispered, her voice barely above a breath. “Can we go back?”

“Shut up, Lisa!” Mark snapped again, irritation spilling over. “You’re ruining the vibe. It’s just a bunch of trees. Let’s keep going.”

But just then, a low growl echoed through the trees, freezing them in place. The sound was primal, filled with menace.

“What the fuck was that?” Jake shouted, his bravado shattered.

Before anyone could answer, the growl transformed into a loud, chilling roar. Panic surged through the group as they turned to run, adrenaline fueling their escape. But the forest seemed to twist around them, the shadows growing darker and more oppressive.

“Mark, we need to get the hell out of here!” Lisa screamed, her eyes wide with terror.

“Go! Just run!” he shouted back, leading the way.

As they sprinted through the thick underbrush, branches clawed at their skin, and the darkness closed in around them. The feeling of being hunted was palpable. They weren’t just lost in the woods; they were being hunted by something far more sinister.

They burst into a small clearing, panting heavily, eyes wild. “What the fuck was that noise?” Jake gasped, his face pale.

Mark looked around, his heart racing. “I don’t know, but we need to stick together. We can’t let it split us up.”

But the woods had other plans. From the shadows emerged a figure, tall and twisted, its eyes glowing with an unnatural light.

“Run!” Mark shouted as terror consumed him, and they all fled, deeper into the darkness, unaware of what awaited them in the heart of the redwoods.
