The end life is normally one of contention; was it tragic, heroic, deserved, peaceful? Some say the good die young, or that their time was too early. However the one universal thing that everyone says about their loved one is that they wish that there was more time that they could have spent with them. Ken just wished he had someone to say that about him, or at least have normal people around.
Two years ago, a little thing happened. A bomb in the New York, London, Shanghai, and Hong Kong Stock Exchange all detonated within days of each other which crumbled the world economy. Then a bigger thing happened, where the Ozone had finally given way and then a solar flare came in and all that cosmic radiation saturated the planet. It wasn’t so bad at first but after two weeks a thing started happening.
Plants started taking the world back, animals became more aggressive and even the bugs started attacking the foundations of society. It was strange first but not even humanity can stop nature no matter how much we shape it. Thus things began to get really weird, little towns were going missing, inhabitants killed and no evidence on how. Then three months in it became clear why, nature had pushed her children of the wild to take back the world slowly.
Nine months after the bombings another civil rights demonstration goes horribly wrong, riots and death spiral the United States into a shadow of its former glory. After that many people just gave up on humanity. After all they couldn’t even take care of each other, how were they supposed to take care of a planet?
Of course the planet will be there long after all of humanity would be all wiped out but still. In the final months of Ken’s life something really bad happened. Massive temperature shifts in the wrong direction, melted roads across the world in certain spots. People could no longer go outside at certain times and then the next thing happened. Water became a commodity, and food became a luxury. In the end death for millions came in the way of suffering, violence and futility.

The terror of those who survived on the flesh of others was horrible, as they would roam buildings from time to time in order to catch an unlucky meal. With the sun baring down its fury onto the planet and crops dying, the world was truly screwed. Society was ending and the sad truth of it was it didn’t really matter, for what is the importance of civilization when there are no people left to partake.
Ken on the other hand struggled to survive and thrive in this new world order but surviving was enough. On the top floor of a luxury apartment complex, long ago since abandoned. He broke into the penthouse expecting it to be empty only to get shot in the neck by a cannibal who so happened to be lying in wait there. Smug bastard actually thanked him for coming over.
As he laid there bleeding out, the bastard came up and patted his head.
“Sorry buddy, I know it hurts, but I need to save my bullets! So in the interest of time I’ll make this quick okay?” he said with a gentle and caring voice. Ken was disgusted but not powerless as prepared for his last dying act. As the cannibal pulled out a knife and brought it close, with a last hurrah Ken grabbed the blade and jammed it upwards into his neck. Things started to get blurry after that, but when he woke up, he was still bleeding but the other guy had a knife through his throat.
As he held his neck, struggling to get up and walk a few steps before collapsing, this time for good. Death would be scary, but in the end it really is quite peaceful. As his vision faded slowly, the sunset shone through the broken windows. The warm orange glow slowly fades into black.
