1: Talentless

1: Talentless

It is an absolute truth that those with more 「power」 will always be at the top.

Life wasn't always like this. Long ago, those who could harness the spiritual energy in the Earth's atmosphere were few and far between. They were revered as heroes simply because they had any power at all, even if it were as simple as exceptional beauty. While others were locked away in mental institutions out of fear for being "crazy" for their ability to predict future events.

These powers were not recognized for what they were until the 「awakening」.

Those with stronger abilities began to awaken to their power. Now, everyone is born with power, whether it is something like reading minds or enhanced physical strength. Powers change from person to person, and no two powers are ever exactly the same, similar to fingerprints.

The world has long adapted to the use of power, and schools specialize in helping students learn to control and harness their power. In schools like these, those with the greatest potential and talent will always overshadow those with less talent, no matter how hard they work. Schools compete mercilessly to gather the students with the highest talents, going so far as to poach students with scholarships from other institutions and holding competitions regularly to have their students claim the "number one" title.

But those without the potential to become champions for their schools are tossed aside until graduation into "dumpster" classes. In one such "dumpster", there was one student in particular who her classmates had labeled as "talentless".

Emery was this so-called "talentless" student, the one known as the trash of the trash. She sighed as she shook the water from her hair and stood up from the fountain. To bully the weak was the privilege of the strong, but didn't they ever get tired of it? Her bag hit her in the face in the next second in answer to her unasked question and landed with a splash into the fountain in front of her. She didn't bother to flinch before reaching down to pull her soaked school bag from the water.

Stolen from Royal Road, this story should be reported if encountered on Amazon.

She wasn't even sure who had bullied her this time. She heard giggles from a few students as they hurried past the fountain, but when she met the eyes of the girls, they blushed and looked away. If they had been the ones to pull this prank, they probably would have sneered.

She had been walking to class when the fountain water had risen up and yanked her into the pool of water, soaking her from head to toe. Her bag had flown of its own accord soon after. Two bullies, then. Probably from the upper classes, guessing by their powers. Emery pushed a wet strand of her hair out of her face and climbed out of the fountain.

Emery checked her bag to make sure nothing was missing before heading towards the girl's locker rooms by the sports fields. At least her jersey hadn't been in her bag so she could change out of her uniform.

As she walked across the school yard, she began to hear the whispers. It was the start of a new school year, and all the new students had started up the gossip again. Those at the top of the school were worshipped, with fans following them wherever they went, while those at the bottom were mocked.

Though the school wasn't the first school in the nation, it was still ranked among the top ten, so for such useless students to still be allowed to attend, new students would understandably be unhappy with the "dumpster" class.

Those in the trash had powers like being incredibly warm to the touch or the ability to make their skin glow very faintly. These students usually got into the school on academics unrelated to powers, but sometimes those in the trash could develop their powers into something more. Though the students might be displeased about their peers in the "dumpster", the school used students who started out weak but became stronger as a selling point to gain new students. There was only one student who remained incredibly weak and useless.

"Isn't that the 'talentless' waste who makes the whole school look bad?"

"Shhh, what if she hears you?"

"Who cares? She's not gonna say anything even if she does."

Emery felt a little flattered that someone would credit her with making the entire school look bad. She was, after all, just one person. She didn't realize she was so famous. She glanced at the two freshmen girls, watching as they hurriedly moved on their way. This was going to be yet another long year.
