In a double car garage, a man casually paced back and forth on the phone. He had short brown hair and a well-trimmed beard.
"You worry too much Ma, nothing crazy is going to happen. At some point, I will get this thing to work!"
"Well, can you blame me, Eric? You almost burned your workshop down."
"If I can prove this Arc Reactor will work, it will change so much!"
"Not everyone is out of a comic, Eric."
Eric sighs while shaking his head.
"Also, that fire was not my fault. I can't control those squirrels jumping up on the tables, knocking things over."
"Alright, alright, just be careful not to blow yourself up. Also, how was that date?"
Eric visibly shudders.
"It... did not pan out."
"What happened?"
"Let's just say they liked tying people up and the feeling of leather. Luckily I escaped the moment I saw her… equipment. I really don't want to go into detail, so please don't ask. Most people don't like talking about those kinds of things with their mother."
"Alright, be safe. We will visit during the holidays, okay?"
"Alright, thanks Ma, I'll talk to you later when I get this thing working." They say their goodbyes.
Eric puts his smartphone in his pocket and walks up to a large piece of equipment in the middle of the room with multiple cables running from it. It had an oval-shaped donut of a glass vessel with copper coils within it.
"Alright, let's see if this gas mix and bulletproof glass vessel will work. I really don't want to start another fire…."
Moving behind a heavy-duty shield, he approached a panel with switches, buttons, and knobs. He flips multiple switches, causing the machine in the middle to hum to life.
"Alright, so far, so good." Taking hold of a knob, he slowly begins turning it.
The humming begins increasing, blue light and tiny sparks appearing in the glass vessel. As Eric raised the power, the light got brighter, and the air started humming along with the machine. Eric's face shifted to one of a person bracing for something terrible to happen. He maxes out the knob, and the device is running steadily.
"Wha-, is it?" He turns the knob down to a minimum. "It's... stable?"
The machine was humming steady, showing no erratic signs. Eric lets out a laugh and starts checking power indicators. "It's stable!" Jumping around, he celebrates his success. Approaching the machine, "Oh, finally, I cannot wait to..." Crack. "Oh… shi-." The vessel explodes in a blinding light.
Cough, cough. Eric coughs as he unsteadily stands up, pushing his barrier off of himself. Looking at the vessel, the glass was obliterated, the metal melted, and most everything else was in a broken condition.
"Should have gone with the most expensive glass."
He pats his body down, checking to see if he was still fully intact. Sighing in relief, he looks at his broken machine.
"At least no fires this time. I should probably not mention this to M-."
A mighty roar shakes the very air. Eric freezes, "Wha-, what the hell was that."
A loud thump sounds from above, the boards creaking under some massive weight.
"Something is walking on the roof…."
Eric rushes over to a locked case and quickly gets it open, pulling out a shotgun and stuffing several shells in his pocket. He could hear something sniffing around above the building. Then with a heavy creak from the roof struts, the scraping above disappears, and the sound of something heavy landing outside, several yards from the door of his workshop, could be heard. Cautiously moving to the door, his back to the wall, the gun at the ready, Eric peers out to his backyard.
Blood drains from his face as when he sees the creature. The creature was as giant as a horse, clawed paws for its front legs and hooves for the hind. Using its lion-like head, it sniffed about the ground. Eric froze once more when he saw the final detail on it, it had a snake for a tail, and it was looking right at him.
The lion head snaps around, looking at Eric, and lets out a terrible roar. It charges right for him in the doorway. Eric screams, point the barrel of the shotgun at it and pulls the trigger. The slug hits the creature in its chest, slowing briefly. In his panic, Eric pumps another round and fires again, and again, and again, until the shotgun clicks.
"Shit!" He pulls shells from his pocket and reloads the gun in a panic.
He pumps the shotgun once more and points it forward. Rapidly breathing, he sees that the creature is no longer moving.
Reaching over to the nearby table, he shakily picks up a wrench and throws it at the creature. It thumps off its bloodied head and lands in the grass. No response. Just to be safe, Eric put one additional slug into the lion's head and one into the snake just to be safe.
Convinced it was thoroughly dead, he lowers the barrel and steps out of the workshop into his yard.
"I-is this a chimera?" He asks himself, curiously looking over the creature he thought he would only see in a video game. Eric looks around his property.
"What the hell? Where are my neighbor's houses? Am I in the middle of a forest?"
The only buildings Eric could see were his workshop and his house. His workshop was an oversized, detached, two-car garage, while his house was a simple ranch-style home. Looking at the workshop roof, he saw some of the tiles were damaged or missing, most likely because of the dead monster.
A bright beam of light flashes from the sky and crashes into the ground a short distance away from Eric. He trains his shotgun at the light as it fades, revealing a woman who looked to be in her early twenties.
"Greetings!" She cheerfully says while raising her hand toward him.
She had long, straight hair that looked and sparkled like a polished sapphire. Her irises were golden with shiny specks like diamonds. She was wearing a white robe similar to those worn by people wanting to dress like a roman.
"Um, hi?" Eric responded to her.
"My name is ********, but you can call me Luna. I am a goddess, here to assist you." She gave him a broad smile.
"Um, I'm Eric. Your name is what? I didn't understand. Also, a goddess? Do you know where I am? What is going on? Is this… Thing a chimera?" Eric rattled off multiple questions at the self-proclaimed goddess.
"Hmm, that is a lot of questions. To start off, yes, that was a chimera. Next, a majority of mortals cannot understand the true names of the gods. And lastly, you somehow transported yourself from your world into this world. Oh, before you ask, this world has magic, monsters, dungeons, gods and demons, and multiple races. Also, technology in this world is waaaaay behind where your world is at." The goddess Luna explained.
"So, can I get back to my world?" Eric asked.
A regretful expression comes across Luna's face, "I am sorry, but we cannot take you back to your world. We have rules ourselves, and the ways you can move between worlds would not be able to fulfill your wish."
"What are the methods?"
She explains that the methods entailed summoning, which his world did not have magic, so it could not be done. Next was re-incarnation, a person dies in one world and is reborn in another, but most of the time, a person's memories were scrubbed out.
"Lastly is one us gods call 'Drifting.' It is sort of a random occurrence that even we gods have yet to truly figure out why it happens. But there are theories of it having something to do with a soul having a strong connection to a world, taking them back to it."
Eric lowers his gun. For some reason, his gut told him she was not lying to him. He turns and heads into his workshop, where he takes a heavy-hearted seat. Overcome with the knowledge that he cannot get home was crushing to him. Luna waved her hand, creating a shimmering barrier surrounding the area they were in and following Eric.
After working through his grief after about an hour, Eric finally calmed down enough to speak more with Luna. She was lightly rubbing his back the whole time.
"So, then, what now? What happens to me?" Eric asked.
A wry smile crosses her face, "Well, we will not be leaving you out to fend for yourself. We will give you some blessings, money and make sure that you will be able to make your way in this world." She replied.
"What about my family? My friends?"
"I am sorry, we cannot interfere in that world as its jurisdiction falls under another god. I can at least ask them if they can make their lives easier."
Eric thanked her for her kindness.
She stood and looked around his workshop, "So, this is an important question. Do you know what caused all this?"
He nods and points at his broken machine, "That there, I can't think of anything else that might have caused it."
She thanked him, stood before it, and with a wave of her hand, it sunk into a purplish, blackish mist by the floor. Eric blinks a few times, and it disappeared within the fog.
"Uh, what just happened?"
Luna turns to him, "Oh, well, I kind of have to confiscate this. This caused some serious damage to the world's barriers. I will also need to seal your memories of this thing so that it is not recreated."
Eric asks her why all of that needed to be done, and she went into an explanation. Luna told him how each world is separated by a powerful barrier and that there is an empty space between worlds called the void. The void was a space where no light, color, or air existed, but some entities live there.
"The void beings are masters of space magic, and they maintain and repair world barriers. They are mostly harmless, but if they end up in a world, they become akin to a natural disaster."
If you encounter this story on Amazon, note that it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
"Why are they like that? You said they are harmless."
"Well, do you know what happens to someone put into a room where a majority of the senses are cut off?"
Eric thinks for a moment and remembers an article he read a few years ago. "They begin going crazy?"
She nods and smiles, "Correct. Now, the void beings are so used to not having any of their senses being in use. Ending up in a world causes them to go insane. Their bodies are very frail, but being masters of space magic, it is nearly impossible to hit them. Then all of their attacks cannot be blocked since they rend space itself."
He nods his head. "Okay, I understand that a little, but what does that have to do with my reactor and memories?"
"I was getting to that." She replied.
"The reason is that it caused a sizable hole to be punched in both world barriers. The void beings are repairing the damage. Some upper-tier gods are managing the repairs and ensuring nothing falls in or comes out of the worlds."
"Oh." It dawned on Eric that his experiment not only moved him to another world but could have caused many people to die.
He asked Luna if anything terrible happened.
"You can be at ease because of how big of an event it was, we caught on very quickly and reacted. Nothing bad has, or will happen."
Eric lets out a sigh of relief.
"Now, will you allow me to seal your memory of it, please? Also, could you tell me what it was?" She asked, approaching him.
"I was trying to create an arc reactor. Though I can guarantee you, I will not be making that thing again if it causes that big of an issue."
"Still, I am required to seal them."
"Might I make a suggestion?"
She nods.
"Seal all the details of its construction. Let me keep the memory that my creating it can cause a massive amount of damage and death."
She thinks for a moment. "I will need to discuss this with my senior. I can see why it would be important for you to remember the consequences."
She steps outside, Eric follows her out.
She clasps her hands before her ample chest and murmurs quietly to herself. Shortly after, another beam of light crashed into the ground. It faded away, revealing a woman who looked to be in her thirties. Her black hair was up in a fancy design with golden ornaments. She wore a traditional Japanese kimono. Its primary color was red with gold trimming and a black sash holding it together.
"You called ********?" She asked, her golden eyes showing decades of wisdom.
"Yes, thank you for coming *******." Luna explains Eric's suggestion.
"Hmm, it sounds good to me. Just add in contractual magic where he swears he will not recreate it." The new goddess said.
"Oh! That is a great idea! Is that acceptable, Eric?"
Eric nods.
Luna walked up to Eric and gently grabbed his head, pulling it slightly down toward her as she was nearly a foot shorter than him. He had to avert his eyes as her sizable cleavage was right in front of his face.
"Okay, first the memories. Please think about the details of what it took to make the reactor." Luna ordered.
Eric closes his eyes and begins running through the building details, components used, what gas mixture was in the vessel, and the process of starting it up. Eric felt a light warmth envelope his thoughts. His memories of his arc reactor seemingly slipped away until he could not remember.
"Okay, that handles those. What can you remember?"
Eric explains that the only part he can remember was building an arc reactor and its dangers.
"Perfect! Now onto the contractual magic. To explain what it is, it is sort of like a contract that locks you into agreed-upon details, but magically!" Luna smiled brightly at Eric.
"So, what are the consequences of breaking a contract?"
The other goddess answered, "It depends, really. Making an attempt would cause severe discomfort or pain. Breaking contract completely could lead to death."
"Understood…" Eric worriedly replies.
"Don't worry too much Eric, I have been assigned to be your handler while you are in this world. I will check in on you and provide bits of support every so often."
"Oh, thanks."
Luna had him stand before her.
"Set forth our contract and seal it upon our agreement, [Contract]." At the end of her chant and stating the spell's name, two magic circles appear. One under him and another beneath her feet.
"Eric, do you swear you will not attempt, or have another entity attempt, to create the arc reactor you created, so long as you live? As well as sharing any details into its creation?" Luna asked him.
"I agree to the terms."
"Is there anything you request?" She asked before the other goddess intervenes.
"There is no need for that, Luna."
Eric looked at the senior goddess in confusion, Luna answered.
"Oh, the spell ends once both sides are in agreement. But ******, I really don't think there should be an issue. Eric seems to be a good person." She smiled while the senior goddess sighs and shakes her head.
"You are far too trusting, Luna. What would you do if he asked for something unreasonable?"
"Couldn't she just turn it down?" Eric cut in.
The senior goddess stiffened, turning away, and told them to finish up.
"Okay, so any requests?" Luna asks again.
"Um, sure, in exchange for this, could you just ask the god of my original world if they could do something good for my family, please? Just asking once is fine." Eric replied, giving something that would make Luna happy and keep the other goddess placated.
"Sure! I agree to the terms!"
The magic circles below their feet spun quickly, flashed, and disappeared. Eric felt the terms of the contract engrain itself in his mind.
"Now, onto the blessing!" Luna raised her fist joyously.
Luna explained that blessings had a wide range and could be customized in all kinds of ways. She also pulled a book out of the purple-black mist that appeared in the air near her.
"What is that, Luna?" Eric asked.
"Oh, this? It is an ability called [Spatial Storage]. It allows a person to store things in a pocket dimension. The amount of storage space is dependent on the amount of magic a person has. In the case of us gods, it would be closer to being able to store a whole kingdom."
Eric starts thinking about what to choose while looking through the blessing book she held out before him.
"Luna, don't forget to remove these buildings and all the items." The senior goddess said.
"Wait, you have to destroy all my stuff?" Eric asked, looking up at them.
"I'm sorry, Eric, but this technology is too advanced for this world, and we can't just leave these buildings in this world. I doubt you would want to live in the middle of this forest of dangerous monsters." Luna commented.
Eric thought about asking them to move his home, but that would not deal with the technology, then an idea hit him. "I have a question."
The two goddesses turn to him.
"When it comes to spatial storage, can living things be put in it?"
"Not normally. Only powerful individuals could, but they would need to recharge the air and remove any pollutants often for anything to survive." Luna answered.
"Then how about this, turn my property here into my spatial storage. If I am the only one who has access to it, then no one in this world would be able to see this stuff." Eric proposed.
"Hmm, that is an interesting idea. I could also make it, so it is always provided with fresh air and sunlight. We could make it so that you can use it like your own little safe haven!" Luna said cheerily as she liked the idea.
"We will have to anchor it to him. While you travel in the world, it will move with you. Then when you are inside of your haven, it will anchor to the location you moved from." The senior goddess added.
"Could it also allow me to instantly move into it? Also, since I have a well and septic, could I get those taken care of too?"
"Absolutely!" Luna seemed like she was finding the idea exciting.
"Oh, also, what about electricity? And my metal furnace and forge work via propane." Eric added.
"No problem. All I have to do is make it, so your stuff will operate via magic. For your home, I will make it so that you have to regularly recharge it with magic or use magic stones." Luna answered.
"This sounds great. I can maybe make money in this world by being a craftsman. I have always liked working my forge." Eric commented.
"Very well, I will take care of converting this space and connecting it to you. I will also take care of the air and sunlight. I will leave the rest to Luna." The senior goddess said, kneeling down and placing her hand on the ground.
A magic circle appeared below her and rapidly expanded to the very edge of the property. Light enveloped the whole area, and all the buildings and the magic circle were gone in a bright flash of light. They were now standing in a grassy clearing in the middle of a forest. The senior goddess stood and walked over to Eric, a small ball of silver magic floating in her dainty hand.
"Give him a greater blessing of magic, Luna." Luna saluted and held her hands out at Eric.
A magic circle appeared before her. Eric felt a warmth rapidly envelope and spread through his body. He also felt knowledge of magic, how it worked, and how to use it enter his mind.
"All done." Luna said, turning to the senior goddess.
"Very good." She raised the silver orb and lightly presses it into his chest until it disappeared within him.
He also felt basic knowledge of how to jump in and out of it enter his mind. "That is amazing. I just understand how all of that works so easily like I had always known how to."
Eric was amazed at how easily it was to get the knowledge, as well as the capabilities of magic itself.
"Yup! Though learning new skills typically gives you an initial amount of knowledge, you have to gain experience to advance your knowledge. With our blessings, they are not only powerful, but you gain the necessary know-how." Luna said, smiling brightly.
The senior, her part complete, said her goodbyes and disappeared into a beam of light shooting into the sky.
"Now then, let's head into your brand new haven!" Luna takes Eric's hand and urges him to use his ability.
Eric takes a moment and pictures the inside of his house, in his kitchen. In an instant, the environment went from being outside to being inside a kitchen.
"Whoa, that felt like… nothing. That kind of felt odd. Shouldn't I feel something when teleporting between the two?" Eric asked.
"Hmm, probably not. Since the space is anchored to you, it is like you are always in it. That is most likely the reason why it felt like you didn't move at all." Luna replied after thinking for a moment.
Luna asked for them to get started on converting everything over to magic. They head down into the basement to where the electrical box was at. Luna pulled out a glowing stone the size of a softball from her storage and attached it to the wall next to the breaker box. Then she added a magic circle that engraved itself into the breaker box, which caused the lights to turn on.
"There we go! I am not sure how long it will last using the core from that chimera core, but," she looked closely at the stone, "you might have a few full days.
If you want more time, it would probably be best to get a larger magic stone and swap it out with this one."
"Neat, do I just remove this one from the wall and put the new one in its place? How do I do that?" Eric asked.
"Oh, right, hmm. Since you like crafting things, could you make a pedestal? If you do that, I will set it up so you can change them at your convenience."
Eric found it a good idea and started thinking of designs while they headed out to the well.
"Oh, how do I recharge the magic stone?" Eric asked Luna, who replied that it would passively recharge from magic in the air. But the goddess told him he could pour magic directly into the stone too.
A white pipe protruded about a foot out of the ground and had a metal cap on top.
"This is it." Eric pointed out to Luna.
She knelt down and hovered her hand over the cap. A magic circle appeared and engraved itself onto the lid.
"Okey, dokey. All done with this. Your well will automatically restore the water within with good clean water. Next, is the septic? Then last is the stuff in your workshop!" She smiled.
He leads her over to the other side of the property and points out a heavy stone panel. "Hmm, how to do this one? This is wastewater, so how to do this?" Luna was running various ideas through her head when Eric speaks up with one of his own.
"Hey Luna, is it possible to just convert all of it into magic and sent it to the house?"
After thinking for a moment, "I don't see any issue, better than troubling someplace else with it."
She creates a magic circle, and it disappears into the ground where the tank was.
"Okay, all linked up. To the workshop!" Luna said while striking a pose and pointing toward their next destination.
Eric could not help but smile over her energetic personality.
As they walked toward the building, Luna asked a question, "Eric, how old are you?"
"Me? Well, I am forty-two." He answered her honestly.
"Hmm, would you like to be younger?"
He stops and looks at her curiously, "You can do that?"
She casually nods, "Mmm Hm! I am thinking of knocking off a couple of decades, making you twenty-two instead. That will give you plenty of time to enjoy this world!"
Eric excitedly agrees. Luna smiles and creates a magic circle underneath him, enveloping him in light. A tingling feeling spread through his body, leading him to feel invigorated and stronger. The light faded, and he began checking himself over. His height did not change much, but he dropped a lot of his excess weight. His hair was a little longer, as well as his beard, two things he planned on fixing later.
"Mmm! You look great!" Luna commented. "Oh, before I forget."
Another magic circle appears before her, and she points at Eric.
Various words and letters flowed into his mind, "I, can now speak different languages? Really?"
"Yuppers! That should be the most common language in the world. Just to be clear, it is different from the languages in your home world. There are others, but you can pick what ones you want later. Onto the workshop!" Luna marched happily toward the workshop.
They get inside, and Luna begins looking around, "Wow, you have a lot of tools."
Eric scratches his head, "Yeah, I started with the furnace, then the forge, then from there I ended up needing all kinds of power tools and such to continue my hobby." He smiles wryly.
"Hmm, it is going to take a long time to get this done. I will just do it will all of the tools and equipment at once."
Before Eric could say anything, a large magic circle appeared on the floor. Everything in the workshop begins glowing, each one getting engraved with a magic symbol.
"Um, was that going a little far, Luna?" He asked.
She shrugs her shoulders, picks a tool that needed to be plugged in, and turns it on. She squeed a bit as she feels the vibration of the internal motor.
"Stop playing with the drill please." Eric asks, which Luna just answers with a smile and puts it back down.
They head out of the workshop, and Eric jumps them back outside of his haven.
"Okay, well, I will be sending you to the closest major city. It is called Meerka."
"Alright, thanks for everything, Luna, and please give my thanks to… What was her name?"
"Oh, right, umm, I can't really tell you. My senior might get mad at me if I don't get her permission."
"That is okay, just let her know I said thanks."
A bright smile came across her face. A new magic circle appeared under Eric's feet.
"Good luck Eric, I will check in on you soon."
The light enveloped his body, teleporting him, only for his senses to be met with the roaring of wind and the eventual surface of a body of water.
