A Chance

“Finally… it’s over.”

Vance Nolan muttered while lying at the peak of a mountain of beast corpses. His whole body was tattered and painted with blood, his own and the beasts’ alike.

A hundred years ago, he was only living peacefully.

Going to school, preparing for college, and facing adult life. This was what Vance expected in his life, but how could he have foreseen it?

That a disaster was going to happen right after he graduated high school.

Humans became zombies, animals became beasts, and unknown creatures began to invade the world.

Vance was forced to fight, kill, fight, and kill for who knows how long. Until it lasted for a hundred years.

After fighting for a hundred years, it was finally going to be over, and he could finally rest.

Vance smiled, seeing the blue sky shining on his hideous face.

“Ahh~ This is the first time I've seen the blue sky since the beginning of this apocalypse…”

A tear poured down his cheeks.

[Congratulations on clearing the tutorial program: The God’s Ascend. As a result, you will be given a reward.]

A blue screen appeared in front of Vance’s face, causing him to be unable to see the blue sky, making his good mood take a turn.

“You again… Can’t you just let me die in peace? Bothering me even in my last breath…”

Vance grumbled.

[As a reward, ‘We’ will grant you anything you wish for.]

Vance scoffed, seeing the floating screen. “Hah! You’ll grant my wish? Where was this thing when I needed it the most? Hmph, fine then! I’ll make a wish! I wish that all the things that happened within the span of a hundred years never happened!”

[Do you mean to say that you wish the training program God’s Ascend never happened?]

Vance squinted his eyes at the floating screen.

Can this guy really do it?

“If that training program or whatever was the cause of this apocalypse, then yes! I wish it never happened!”

[That is impossible. ‘We’ cannot use a rule to break another rule. However…]

Vance looked at the floating screen with contempt.

As expected, this thing can’t do anything at all. A wish-granting thing is too good to be true in the first place.

But the next thing the screen said made him widen his eyes to the point that they were about to pop out of his eye sockets.

[Going back in time is possible.]

“What!?”

Time traveling! In the past, the apocalypse wasn’t the only bizarre thing that happened. There was also something called the unleashing of talents!

Out of nowhere, people began to show extraordinary talents. They weren’t just ordinary talents like singing and dancing; they were phenomenal ones, capable of affecting the environment.

An example of this was conjuring fire out of nothing, flying, extraordinary physical strength, even genetic mutations. All kinds popped out.

There were also some people who gained talents that controlled time. However, all they could do was very limited.

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

They were talking about leaping back a hundred years in time here. Even the greatest Time Controller he knew could only turn back one minute, and it was enough to change the tide of a battle.

It somehow left Vance speechless. This floating thingy that always tailed him wherever he went was actually so powerful!

[Do you want to go back in time?]

The screen asked again. But knowing that it was telling the truth made choosing difficult. Vance knew that choosing "Yes" was the best choice, but he wasn’t a greenhorn; nothing is free in this world.

“Spit it out. What do you want? To offer me something this big, you have some kind of motive, right?”

[Nothing. You have passed the training program. So you have at least this kind of privilege.]

Vance closed his eyes and thought.

Don’t fall for its trap, Vance! I bet it’ll force me to do its bidding. But this is also a one-in-a-million chance to change everything. I can save my friends and my family… Damn it! When did the renowned Spear God become this cowardly!? Screw it! I’ll deal with it when the time comes.

“Hey bluey! I’ll use that wish right now! I want to go back in time. I want to redo everything, and this time without losing anyone else!”

[Understood. Activating Grand Magic: Chronos.]

Right after the blue screen appeared, a green magic circle followed. It was gigantic, covering the whole sky instantly, and it was still expanding endlessly.

Not long after, the green magic circle already enveloped the whole Earth.

Vance witnessed all of this with his own eyes.

“What kind of magic is this? It doesn’t even compare to what Archmages can do!”

Vance said in amazement.

Suddenly, the magic circle released a bright light. It was so blinding that Vance had to close his eyes.

If a person could see the whole Earth, they’d see that it was shining with green light.

In the vast dark space, it was sticking out as if it were another sun.

This bright light didn’t last long; after a second, it was already back to normal.

Vance knitted his brows. Feeling that the burning light was already gone, he slowly opened his eyes.

“Ugh… my head hurts. Was that blue thing a quack after all…? And where is this place?”

Vance clenched his head while complaining. He looked around him and found out that he was in a completely different place from a moment ago. There were no corpses or blood anywhere; it appeared to be a normal room.

“Wait… my body doesn’t hurt? Impossible! I was dealt many injuries in the fight earlier. And this place… I vaguely remember it… isn’t this my room from a hundred years ago!?”

Memories of the past gradually came back to him, although they were a little foggy. It was natural since a hundred years had already passed since then.

[How is it? Do you believe me now?]

As usual, a screen showing those words appeared. Well, its appearance was not the usual, though.

“Oh, bluey— Wait, did you have a change of style? Why are you golden now? And somehow I feel like you’re different from a while ago.”

[This is the result of you finishing the training program. I received a promotion and have now become a personal system.]

“What’s the difference from before?”

[Before, I was a system that managed programs like The God’s Ascend, but now I am a personalized system! The God System!]

“You said earlier the word ‘personal.’ I assume that’s me, right?”

[Yes, precisely so!]

“What can you do?”

[Uhh… I can show you your stats, and you can buy at the shop with points.]

Vance raised his brows.

“Then aren’t you basically useless? You could also do that before.”

Bang! A bullet was shot straight at the System.

[Useless!? I have to tell you that I’m different from those normies that you compared me to! With my God System, you’ll gain two stat points in every attribute of yours once you gain a level. And my Shop sells much higher quality items compared to others, you know!?]

The golden screen seemed to grow two hands and kept pointing at Vance.

“Okay, okay. Chill, dude. Aren’t you somehow more emotional than before? You were so cold back then. However, indeed, all of that seems to be useful, especially those two stat points. Okay then, show me my stats now.”

[Hmph! I’ll remember this. Here!]

Another golden screen appeared in front of Vance.

Vance looked at his stats with strange eyes.

“Hey, goldy, I’m not a human anymore but a God? Furthermore, what’s with this Divinity attribute and these locked skills?”

[This is the main reward for completing the training program The God’s Ascend. Since you are now a god, you will need Divinity to improve your God Rank. You can get Divinity by absorbing the faith of your followers or absorbing the Divinity of other gods. Those locked skills are abilities that came with your new race. You can unlock them by reaching a certain quantity of Divinity.]

“So I’m not a human anymore? That’s disappointing…”

[Uhh… I think you’re the only one who can say that in the entire universe.]

“Anyway, at what point in time did you bring me back to? I want to prepare for the first wave of the apocalypse.”

Boom!

Right after saying that, a loud explosion sounded outside.

[Umm… on the first day of the apocalypse…?]

“You f*cker!!”
