The person standing beside their partner uttered the word "bored" with a drawn-out sigh, and their body language made it clear that they thought this was an apt description of the bustling downtown scene. The street was alive with honking horns, laughing children, and chattering friends, but it all felt monotonous and dull to them. As they continued their stroll, they passed an alley where a mugging took place while further down the road lovers bid farewell. Even in the hospital the sick were no longer suffering - just another mundane part of life.
Their partner looked at them and said, "Nobody likes a complainer. How about we change it?"
Their partner’s eyes lit up, and a wicked gleam flashed across their face as they suggested natural disasters and apocalypses. But even the excitement of destruction bored them after a while.
"Let's do something different," they said, an idea forming in their mind. "These people, Humans. They have stories they created to entertain themselves: stories of traveling to new worlds. Or having strange powers thrust on them, stories of overcoming tremendous odds to survive and protect their loved ones."
A glimmer of understanding crossed their partner’s face, before quickly shifting back to excited anticipation. "Oh! How about we restart everything? Just make it a clean slate? Kill them all? Or leave one alive and see what happens?"
"No Destruction." their partner replied with a slight frown.
They fixed them with a look that dared any further argument, "I hate that name."
"Well if you keep acting up I will call you that." they responded playfully, softening the moment before continuing.
"Alright then, as I was saying, let’s do something different. Let's let them decide."
Chaos glanced around at the oblivious people walking past them, and they could sense Order’s eye roll through the darkness.
If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. Please report it.
"No," Order said slowly. "I mean give one of them our abilities, so that they can create realities like we do."
A mischievous smile crept across Chaos' face as they imagined what kind of havoc this would bring. Their maniacal laughter filled the night sky, and Order gently reminded them to keep it down.
"Give one of them our powers and let them create their own existence," Chaos said excitedly. "But I don't want someone that's too predictable or easy; I want them to work for it, really think about it."
Order nodded in agreement, curious to hear what Chaos had in mind.
"Let me think on it some more," Chaos replied thoughtfully. "I'm not exactly like you, Order; it takes me longer to come up with answers, but usually I get pretty close to the result I want. Like when I made these humans—by far my favorite creation."
Order was torn between the two opinions, their head shaking in disbelief. "I understand. I'm not a big fan of them; they show too much of your volatile nature during the Change."
"Forgive me Order, not everyone can be one of the Elves. Look how that helped them? They're extinct. Sure, Humans may have assisted in speeding up the process but that's only because they are so capable of adapting to any environment and creating it according to their own needs. Though this usually leads to a bad outcome. Still, I don't understand why they consistently fail to choose the right leaders. It's probably because they don't like being told what to do... just like me." A mischievous grin grew on their face as they briefly did an uncoordinated dance before calming down again. Deep down, Order knew that was part of the reason why he had suggested this idea - the combination of Human adaptability with forces of Chaos and Order could result in either glory or complete destruction. The possibilities were endless and uncertain which made it all the more exciting.
The air around them seemed to buzz with electricity as Order and Chaos locked eyes, each daring the other one to make the first move.
Order finally gave a slight nod, which was all the encouragement Chaos needed. Immediately their hands were in motion, weaving an intricate web of energy that gradually expanded until it engulfed the world. The faint outline of an app appeared on every phone, crackling with its own essence as another set of gods weaved their way into human existence.
"They can't just focus on the game," Chaos mused, eyebrows peaking as they continued to construct their reality altering plan. "Let's shape the world with this app. Their choices will affect Monsters and Heroes alike as the world changes around them."
Order laughed at the suggestion but hummed in agreement. After a few more moments of silent contemplation, they joined hands and with a thunderous SNAP! the God Application was released – changing the fate of humanity forever.
