As the lights set on the new horizon, a duo lay tired on the grass. The memories are faint, but I cannot remember their faces. One lies on his back, ever so still, but the other was moving so fluidly. Like a leaf in the wind. As the sun begins to peek, the sky paints itself orange. The man who moved like water began to speak, “Oh woe is me! We have all been vanquished to the depths of–”
The other man laughed, “You aren’t one for the arts, I’ll tell ya that much, but who are you talking to?” He asked in a slow manner.
“Just getting one more laugh out of you,” He snickered.
“Startled me… well? Just get it over with,”
The man faces back to me, “Where should I start?” He asked himself.
The world shifts back not too long ago, 21 years to be exact. The day of my creation, and the fall of my mother. The world was plunged into a red abyss where the only cover for those beasts’ roars were the cries of the citizens. They all screamed something along the lines of, “They abandoned us!” and “There’s no use praying.”
“Hmm yes, you remember well,” The fluid man remarked.
“You understand that thing?!” The still man yelled in question.
He laughs, “Well, you must understand that her creations all have souls, however, this one contains as much soul as a creature.”
“R-Really?” He coughed.
“Woah! Easy fella, I’m only going to make this brief so be still,” The fluid man said to the still man.
“Relax, I’m not going anywhere.” The still man laughed.
The fluid man sighed, turning around and continuing to speak, “You are a foundation, supporting this world and protecting it.” The man said. “This job… will be relatively easy, however, with a soul like yours, I can only hope you don’t grow too much attachment.”
Stolen from its original source, this story is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.
“Plants can get attached?” The still man taunted.
“I’ll deal with you later,” The fluid man scoffed. “Back to what I was saying, you protect this world, and trust me when I say it is an easy job, you basically just do nothing. The problem lies when you discover emotion. Hopefully, you will find the answer, just as I wish I could.”
“Come now, it’s not the time to get all sentimental,” The still man complained.
“I’m not! Just thinking about the future,” He replied. “Right, the future never holds answers, just remember that. When the time comes when you question everything, just remember this. Such is a part of life.”
The fluid man sits down and gives me a lecture. “Even if nothing hurts you, the soul still hurts. I believe that in the future, you won’t have to worry about your soul being broken ever again. Disaster may strike but you must put on a strong face.”
I don’t remember much, but only a few weeks ago the sky was still red. Why is the sky orange? Where are the black things in the sky? And, and…
“Woah there, calm down! It’s safe now, the sky is no longer red! The black things in the sky turned into puffy white flying things called clouds. And you…” The man tapped me three times. “...You are starting to grow.”
“Hey! Sentimental!” The still man called. “It’s time.”
The fluid man sighed. “Y’know, I never liked doing this.”
“Well, this will be your last time.” The still man smiled, “I only hope the best for you.”
The fluid man turned away but he couldn’t hide the tears rolling down his face. The rest is just a blur. The last thing I remember from them is “Let’s go to the beach.”
“Ho-ho, You told me this story a few times already,” An old lady laughs.
“S-Sorry village elder, I guess my memory is deteriorating, just like an average human.”
“No need to be sorry, Yggdrasil, you are much deserving of my attention, especially with your age,” The old woman comforted.
“Bah! You’re nearing the end of your life! I’m still fairly young so please don’t treat me like an old man!” In an attempt, Yggdrasil turns its back despite being a tree.
Yggdrasil, the world tree. Said to have been created by the first god’s death during the traitorous era. Though not that many people know, it watches over the people silently. The power of the gods is no longer and has long been absorbed by Yggdrasil. With its bond, it shares that power among the humans. When all is said and done, the tree will do its upmost to keep the world safe.
