On a late summer night, we were out here having fun in the lighthouse at the Dragon's Cliff. A party has been thrown for the 20th anniversary of the local police chief's daughter, which both of us have been attending.
"At least until somebody decided to ruin everything by throwing a fuss."
"Huh, what do you mean?"
Anyway, the sky was littered with shining dots that were reflected in the river below, itself pierced by stones and pebbles that stood tall above the water's current. The wind flew above it all, giving the air itself a fresh taste and smell.
"At least until somebody decided to light up their cigarette."
"Oh come on man, what got you so pissed? I know; I am sorry for everything that happened, but that guy was just being annoying to the other guests."
"That is no reason for you to just go and punch him, you know? You. Just. Punched. A dude."
"And since when do you get to be the moral judge here? You were all over the chief's daughter even if you knew she had a boyfriend."
"Haven't you heard? She and Brad broke up a week ago."
"A week? You're bullshitting me!"
"No, I kid you not. And I mean, even if they were together, what would've been wrong in me doing it? Considering we both like each other, it would've been natural."
"Ok man, I am sorry. I acted like a douche."
"It's good that you know. Now get your ass in the car before I change my mind and leave you here."
The car we came here with was my dad's old Honda Beat. It was not that bad looking of a car, on the opposite, it had a red coat, same as the rims...
See where I am getting here? Total disaster.
When he gave me the keys he told me: "Here, have these. For sure you don't want to take the bus to a party, am I right? If you see any hot girls there, bring them home so your lonely dad won't be lonely anymore."
I scowled in his direction.
"Okay, okay, don't be so tense. Who shoved a stick inside your butt because I sure as hell did not."
My look of displeasure just takes on a whole new dimension at this point.
"... Just take these and go."
I am now starting to understand why it stood in the garage for so long. I guess he used this car back when my mom was still around. I mean it can barely fit two people, let alone more than that.
But now's not the time to indulge in reminiscing about the past, as Mack was waiting in the car for me.
"What took you so long? I was starting to get bored here."
"Just shut up, you are getting a free ride after you got your ass driven right on the front door by the guards."
"Ok, ok. I know you are pissed. Look, Josh, just drive..."
Josh put the key in the ignition and pressed his foot on the clutch. The engine started to purr like a cat after being scratched behind its ears. The break from sitting around in the garage only did it good.
But then it suddenly stopped. Josh is still frowning.
"Come on, man, calm down and let's go."
He sighed. It's in the past now. He repeated the process again and after putting it in gear and pressing on the accelerator we left only to be stopped at the exit.
I rolled down my window and looked with confusion at the guy who gave us the stopping signal.

"Dude, don't tell me you are coming after me outside now! I just punched a drunk bastard, that's all..."
"It's not about that. It's just that there is a race going on at the moment and we can't let you leave until the contestants pass this point."
"Wait, a race? Now?"
And just as I asked that I saw them climbing up to the top. Dragon's cliff was the tallest point in the region, with the road coming up to this point, then descending until you get back into the city. This made it a popular place for racing, both uphill and downhill.
As I looked towards Josh I saw what I never wanted to see. He was entranced as he saw the two other drivers. And as usual, that is not good for me.
"Come on, we need to catch up to them!"
"No way..."
The words barely came out of my mouth as Josh slammed down on the accelerator. I had to drop my unfinished cigarette and close the window as I did so. Of course, the innocent bystander could do nothing about it as he watched us leave.
"Ready or not..." he said as he pressed the pedal to the floor.
First, second, and third, we got all the way to the fourth gear. At this point, we got to the first corner and as I blinked, we passed it.
"I swear to god I never understand how you do that, Josh."
"What do you mean, it's simple, watch this."
As we got to the next corner, he did some kind of moves with his feet and the steering wheel and we were past it. What kind of cornering technique is that I have no idea.
After a few corners, we found ourselves catching up to the racers. As I was closer I could now see what kind of cars they had. It looked like a race between a Levin and a Trueno, quite an interesting choice of cars. But considering we caught up to them, they must not be that good, at least compared to Josh.
And right I was as at the next corner we passed them on the outside. Josh even yawned as he got past them. The driver of the car in the front looked like a Japanese guy, kind of unsure about what he was doing. Heck, his eyes got so wide when he saw us he almost lost control of the car.
The guy behind was incredibly relaxed as well, no wonder considering who he had to face. But he was behind so it didn't matter as long as he kept up with him.
Maybe he overtook him later, but I never got to know as we finished our descent way before them.
"Holy shit man that was pretty cool right now!"
"What was?" Josh replied.
I mean we totally left these two in the dust, but considering the fact that Josh was riding this course every day to get to the other side of the city where his job was made it understandable.
You now probably think: "Why would it matter?"
Well, that's because my man right here, Josh, always gets up late. He is always in a rush and as such he needs to go fast.
The Dragon's Cliff route is not that driven on as it is much longer than going through the city to get to the other side so it is usually pretty empty.
After the whole deal, we got to my home where Josh dropped me off.
"See you, man, that was a lot of fun."
"It sure was, see you."
Fun enough to calm me down at least. I can't believe that guy, I give him a free ride and just decides to ruin the day. Just talking about it kinda gets me mad again.
I take a deep breath and exhale.
