Chapter 5.3 : Trapped

Chapter 5.3 : Trapped

"Will everything be okay?"

"Everything will be fine."

They had successfully planted explosives in the back of the main generator's cavity, it was lying there, slowly wait for the signal, if the button pressed, it would immediately blow up the entire area.

The operation moved into the second phase: Strangulation - not directly assaulting them, but tying their necks to the noose.

The group, including Karl, went to the second area of the research facility - where the documents were stored.

"Hey." - Olga turned to Ivan and asked in a whisper.

"...?"

"Do you feel cold?"

Indeed... This cold was very unusual.

Each step they took forward became more and more unreal, the corridor became darker and darker, the cold mist filled their lungs, causing their exhaled breath to condense into smoke. It seemed that all they could see was the frantic red of the emergency lights above their head.

Karl could hardly hide his hesitation in his plan, his eyes have told all of it! He didn't know whether to go further, since the day of Victory was near, or... Just wait? Haste was futile.

But having gone this far, there was no chance to turn back...

"A convoy of trucks will be here in minutes. We must disrupt their convoy at all costs, not allowing them to reach the headquarters... I'll have to rely on you guys for everything this time." - Karl said with a low voice, they can sense a little tremble in his words.

The footsteps echoing from the dark corridors, they had reached the deeper part of the research area, they had clearly increased the security here considerably: the density of soldiers increased, the shifts were rotated more frequently.

Alexei glanced around, the chaotic gestures in both actions and words could not be hidden from Olga, Dmitri and Karl behind him, who looked calmer than the newbie Alexei.

Glancing out the window, Dmitri patted Olga's shoulder, and glanced at the convoy outside.

He said in an unusually low voice: "See them?"

Olga nodded slightly.

"But how do we get there?"

Karl frowned, thought for a moment, and then answered.

"You can use your authority to get there...?" - he said in an unusually skeptical tone, as if he couldn't guarantee his own words.

"Are you sure?"

"..."

Taking a risk, the group quickly went to the warehouse, but were stopped by Colonel Heinrich - "The boss" of this place.

"What the hell is this!? Karl! Quickly explain to me who these people are!"

Huh! He, still with that sickening local accent.

Karl didn't say much to this guy, he had lived as a German officer for too long, there was nothing but carefree in his words.

"Again! Stop asking, old man!" - he laughed heartily.

The Colonel glared at Karl, his face full of irritation, but he still ignored it.

"Watch your mouth, boy! One day I'll knock out a few teeth for good measure!"

Karl simply shrugged, looking away.

"Hmph! Who cares!"

Even so, Heinrich was still very wary of the strangers behind Karl. Suddenly he charged towards Olga, grabbing her* collar tightly.

"Ouch! What are you doing-..."

"Karl! Explain to me about this woman and those little shits!"

He grabbed even harder, his other hand ready to pull the gun.

Olga pulled the Colonel's hand away, Karl, sweating, quickly stepped forward to explain.

"This annoying woman!" - he violently tugged her collar back.

Her*: Olga is a Soviet Union woman spy, in case the previous chapter misspelling her pronouns.

A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.

"Heinrich...! They were my men and Dr. Demian! They were just checking the electrical equipment and machinery!" - he grimaced in explanation, probably because he saw Olga being assaulted for no reason.

He glared at Karl for a long time, perhaps from now until the end of his life, he would never forget the ferocity and madness in Heinrich's eyes. But in the end, he snorted and threw Olga to the ground.

"You guys better not do anything in front of me."

Thinking he could escape, but immediately after that, he took out a Luger, leaving a bullet embedded in the ground next to Olga, everything happened so fast! No one expected him to actually pull out the gun, before she could see anything, there was a bullet hole in the ground and a deafening gunshot. That also caused the soldiers everywhere to be in an uproar.

"You know the consequences, right? Haha!" - he used Karl's mocking voice, making the guy's blood boil.

"Ouch..." - Olga, who was pushed to the ground, could only let out a soft cry of pain.

The guards also ran over at the sound of gunfire, Heinrich suddenly turned around.

"Search them."

"Hey! Old man! What do you think you're doing!?"

The soldiers rushed over, knocking down the group, and the Colonel standing behind burst into laughter.

"Haha, you little rats are still too arrogant! I'll have to personally teach you a lesson."

Karl, who still maintained a bit of composure, replied.

"They're just a technical team sent here! Who do you think you are to point a gun at us!"

Heinrich stepped forward, punching Karl hard in the face, that punch really reeked of the fascist army's disgusting smell.

"What else are you up to, brat? Your tricks can't fool me and Egelbert."

With that, he turned to the guards.

"What are you waiting for? Search them quickly!"

Heinrich - seemingly still not satisfied, grabbed Karl's hair and whispered in his ear.

"Tell me, Karl, where did you hide those golds?"

He stammered, not knowing what to say.

"... Okay, you just want to know, right?"

"..."

"... Wilheimstraße, number 762, in the basement, there are three safes containing gold from the Jews that I confiscated."

"Good boy!"

He pushed him down hard, causing Karl to lose his balance and fall painfully to the ground, his mouth still smiling wickedly.

"You're smarter than what I expected! Hahaha!"

Fuck! You Nazis are all the bunch of bastards!

"Ugh..."

"Get in! Before I change my mind! Guards! Come on, come with me!" - he leisurely lit a cigarette, his mouth still laughing.

He and the soldiers finally gave up, at least he was still kind enough to let them stay.

"Alright... Let's do it quickly..."

They pretended to go inside to check the electrical system, once they were out of sight from the outside, they immediately deployed the explosives.

"Just a little longer... This place will definitely be as vibrant as fireworks!"

"Let's go back to my office, and get out of here!"

They calmly walked out as if they had really just checked the electricity. Poor patrol soldiers, they didn't know that in a few hours they would be blown up!

They all laid down on the sofa next to Karl's desk, everything seemed to be moving in slow motion...

What a coincidence, Müller happened to be passing by, accidentally saw the strange object on the floor, he picked it up.

"???" - the thing he just picked up was a small pack of TNT.

"Müller!? Give it back to me!" - Karl, who had seen everything from behind the window in front of the office.

"... Why do you have this?"

"Not your business. Don't ask, if you dare to tell anyone, don't blame me."

After Müller went out, Olga closed the door, the group looked at each other in confusion.

"Who dropped it!?"

"What if they report it to the higher-ups?! We'll all be fucked up!"

This was a really awkward situation, we had no choice but to move ahead of the schedule: arrive earlier than Ivan and Yan's group, wait for them outside.

"Is it okay...?"

Yan, Ivan, and Becker all managed to sneak into the General Staff at the same time. Their fake identity was perfect! No one could detect even the slightest flaw.

As for Colonel Becker, he had no goodwill towards the Soviet-backed organization at first. However, as the war progressed, he became more and more aligned with the Red Orchestra, until he took the risk of cooperating with the organization and becoming a double agent.

A smart move? Possibly, but also risky. Remember that German intelligence and counterintelligence organizations remained to operate until the end of the war, and his hanging on the eve of victory was a real possibility. Those unfortunate numbers could not be allowed to become true to be a fatal accident.

Even so, Becker still pointed them out and led them to the second generator room of the facility, a hidden space. The two workers moved quickly like skilled mechanics, and the inspection was finished in a flash.

"No problem." Yan turned to Becker from the corner of the room.

Ivan also replied.

"Everything's fine here."

It seemed like everything was still working... Very normal.

The Colonel nodded, then signaled for them to step outside.

"Follow me to the office, I need to adjust some information."

Passing through the narrow and gloomy corridor filled with guards, with their acting being so good, they encountered no obstacles.

After a while, they finally reached Hans Becker's private office, they entered, carefully closing the front door, making sure no rats were listening in behind.

"Here, you guys can see."

Ivan opened the document, inside was a diagram of the building and notes on the weak areas in the structure of the General Staff.

"Changed plans? Install more explosives?"

"Um..."

"Where are the explosives? We came here to get the documents of the Photon Accelerator, we didn't bring anything with us." - Yan said in a low voice.

Becker put a large toolbox on the table, it looked quite old, and a bit flat.

"I guess you are already know what's inside. Your job is to install it on the convoy of trucks behind the facility."

"..." - Yan was speechless with this reluctant mission.

Yan stood at the side of the car, Becker opposite, creating a scene of them talking to each other to cover Ivan's installation under the truck. The guards kept passing by them, looking as if they were constantly glaring and eavesdropping on their conversation.

"This is suffocating..."

"It's done..."

Ivan stood up, brushed his pants, and patted Yan on the shoulder.

"Good, now go back to my office."

Disaster struck when Ivan accidentally dropped the wrench on the pile of corrugated iron next to him. The sound attracted the patrolling soldiers, and by the time he realized his mistake, it was too late! They had already arrived, Yan looked down at his feet, trying to calm himself down.

"It's okay..."

He accidentally glanced at the remaining pack of explosives that had also fallen from the box. You son of a bitch Ivan! You've ruined it badly!

Everyone held their breath, it seemed like the nightmare was just beginning...
