1. Galactic Data Compendium - Not a lot is publicly known about where this came from or who runs it. It appears for all intents and purposes to be a who's who and what's what of the multiverse. It contains information on just about everything, if you know where to look and what questions to ask.
2. Great Distances Covered - As new races join the greater galactic community, the G.D.C. gates show up in their solar systems.
They are manned and defended by very powerful artificial intelligences. They enforce certain rules upon anyone intending to enter the space around them or to travel through them. These rules are enforced very firmly by the powerful force beams on the corners of the gate cubes. No one that has gotten into a disagreement with a gate has come out the victor, be it a single ship or a full battle fleet.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
No actual information about the gate design or function is available. No knowledge about who makes them is available. Of course rumors abound and the most frequent rumor is that the gates are attached to The Old Ones. And no one wants to mess with The Old Ones.
3. Garbage Disposal Corporation - This is another mystery. Shortly after the arrival of the G.D.C. gate, this company signs a contract with the entire civilization of that solar system to haul away their trash.
All technologically advanced civilizations have waste products and dealing with them becomes a rather large business. All of these businesses immediately go out of business when Garbage Disposal Corporation takes over.
All the garbage of the entire solar system gets dumped into high compression compactors which are built by the company and when the compactors are full they simply eject compacted cube of waste matter directly at the G.D.C. Gates. The gates then grab the garbage cube with their force beams and pull It in. No one seems to know where the garbage goes, all they know is they're glad it's not piling up on their planet anymore.
Most people figure it's better not to ask questions than to risk upsetting the company and being forced to take care of their own garbage again.
