Vaidehi is teaching her new student the basics of hindu unit of time, "In our mythology it is said that the god who decides our fate is called Bramha. When one thinks of Bramha they expect him to be eternal, but no, even gods themselves perish in this ever changing universe. It is said that the current bramha is the 7th Bramha and he is in his dwitiya paraardh (Second half). 7th Bramha's name is Shatananda, the 8th Bramha is called Chaturmukha" She leans forward to get the attention of her student and starts speaking again, "The mythology states that the Universe which we live in starts with the origin of Brahma. It runs till Brahma's life and after His death another cycle starts with the creation of next Brahma by Vishnu. Brahma's lifespan extends to 100 years. His 1 day consists of a day and a night. During day Universe runs and during night everything dissolves and nothing left and Vishnu goes to sleep on Sheshnag. Universe again starts on the second day at daytime and this cycle goes on till Brahma's lifespan.
* A daytime of Brahma consists of a duration of 1 Kalpa and night time is also of same duration.
* 1 Mahayuga consists of 4 Yugas called Chaturyuga in the ratio of 4:3:2:1.Namely Satya, Treta, Dwapara and Kali.
* 1 Manvantara consists of 72 Mahayugas.
* 1 Kali yuga is said to last 1200 divine years.
* 1 Dwapara yuga is 2400 divine years.
* 1 Treta yuga is 3600 divine years.
* 1 Satya yuga is 4800 divine years.
* 1 divine year is 360 time a human year.
* 14 Manvantaras equal to 1 Kalpa which is equal to 1 day cycle (Morning) of Bramha. 2 Kalpas make up a single day in the life of Bramha.
Some other texts say
Kali yuga is 1296 years
Dwapara yuga is 2592 years
Treta yuga is 3888 years
Satya yuga is 5189 years, all in the same 1:2:3:4 fashion. And the four yugas together form the half rotation of our solar system around the galactic centre. The half cycle of yugas start from Satya followed by Treta and Dwapara, ending with Kali and just like the phases of the moon Kali yugais followed by another Kali yuga towards another satya yuga.”
Dumping all this info into the mind of her new student she takes a recess to allow the child to digest the information. The child who just turned 14 this year is eagerly consuming the knowledge his teacher is delivering. His eyes are sparkling with a brilliant light as indicating his interest in the topic. The place they were in is in a room on the 3rd floor of a long building spanning a couple of hundred meters. The building seemingly has 9 floors but the number of people living here are disproportionate to its capacity. These people all belong to a clique, supposedly they are the descendants of the seven great sages of the previous yuga.
After the recess she begins teaching the child again, “ Each subsequent yuga bring forward an evolution in humanity. In Satya yuga the spiritual development is at its peak, and it slowly falls down by the time we reach Kali yuga. But, humanity develops in a materialistic direction in this duration. In essence we as a whole alternate between spirituality and materialism like a sine and cosine curves but also evolve along the way. Now coming back to brahma what do you think is his role in this universe? Or in particular his role in evolution of humanity?” She posed a question to her student to make this lecture more of a conversation than a monologue. The child named Vidur ponders for a while and answers “the creation and evolution of life on a larger scale and deciding the fates of each and every person on a person and living beings in this universe.” She begins explaining her point of view in this regard “ Even the creator Bramha himself cannot determine every second of our lives, what he does is instead micro managing the lives of every human being and a living organism by playing around with probability.” “Say a person is destined to be a hero of an era, Bramha creates a few key moments in his life which have a high probability of happening. These key moments mould the character of the said person and his actions are thus a reflection of it.” Vidur immediately asks her “how can lord Bramha ensure that those key moments indeed happen in a person’s life?” to which she guides him by hinting, “think in a broader perspective.” After thinking for a while it strikes him, “Since he can decide key aspects of each and every beings life he can probably create a series of coincidences in the lives of the beings around a person which further influences the life and the character of the intended target. He does so in manner which increases the probability of the key moments occurring in the targets life. It all happens in a series of interconnected incidents which in a very coarse way analogous to butterfly effect.” “Hmm, the butterfly effect, although it is stretching a bit, the analogy probably fits.” “Now tell me do you think that the Bramha being the origin of the Universe and length of the yugas being so vast is believable or atleast hypothetically or meta-physically feasible?” To this he immediately responds with his own view onthis matter, “I think Lord Bramha’s life being the beginning and the end of the universe is probably not true, if it is so the each new version of Lord Bramha creates a new cycle which is in no way related to the previous cycle. There is no scope for evolution if he or she needs to start building the universe from scratch every time they begin their term. An evolution needs continuity, at least in some form for the successive yugas to move forward. The vestiges from previous universe or even the previous yuga needs to be passed on to the next one. They say that the seven sages are the vestiges of the previous era who will pass on their knowledge to the current era, and we are probably the descendants of those sages.” Vaidehi is impressed by his inferences so far and continues to test him further, “then what do you think about the number of years in a yuga?” Vidur is quite confused as to where this conversation is going, at one point she seemed to be guiding his thought process in a particular direction and at another instance she is asking a question from completely different direction. He stopped trying to figure out her intentions after struggling for a while and gave his opinion, “I think it is quite far feteched to say even the smallest yuga is 432000 human years, after all I find it hard to believe humanity will last that long if we keep going forward with our current habits and lifestyle.” “From what I know dinosaurs went extinct about 65 million years ago and the ice age started about 2.6 million years ago and lasted until roughly 11,000 years ago. Humans began emerging since 6 million years ago.”
