Prologue

The throne room was packed with Shadow wolves, all the night- black pelts shining, with the little white dots that looked like stars on the black pelts. There was at least 50 wolves in there, and the royal family was by the queens throne, Queen Peril. Peril glared at them all, her fierce orange eyes watching every wolf, so some wolves looked uncomfortable. The queen growled softly, and sat back, opening her mouth to speak. The king was on the other throne, his throne as big as Peril’s, and the throne was both made of obsidian. King Raven had a spiky obsidian crown that shined, and Peril had a white crown, like a star.

Princess Stargazer sighed. Her mother always had long speeches, and Raven always made a statement to whatever Peril said. Stargazer’s oldest brother, Sundown, was right next to her.

Ugh! Sundown is wiggling again! Why is he doing that! He is so annoying… I wish I could stuff him in a volcano in the Fire Wolves palace…

Stargazer glared at her brother, and he glared back, his blue eyes shining with laughter. She could tell he was laughing in the inside, since he always scrunched up his snout and she thought it was really annoying. Stargazer rolled her eyes and tried to listen to her mother speak, even though it was really annoying. Peril was talking about how the Fire Wolves are attacking our guards.

“We need to stop letting the Fire Wolves kill our guards! They already killed about 20 of our guards, but we did capture some of the Fire Wolves thankfully.” Peril said in a loud, booming voice that hurt Stargazer’s ears. She wanted to clamp her paws around her ears, but her mother would get mad at her.

“Yes. Queen Peril is correct. Try to kill or take as many Fire Wolves you can, soldiers and guards. Remember that, wolves.” Said Raven matter of factly, holding up one claw.

Stargazer almost scoffed, but stopped herself. If Queen Peril or King Raven catched her doing that to them, she’d be in big trouble. They focused on her a lot, since she was the only princess and a prince can’t become king, only the princess can, and she chooses her partner to be a king. When the queen gets to be 85 moons, the queen has to retire. Stargazer doesn’t want to be queen, and does not want to have a partner. Sundown kept on fidgeting around, and it was really getting on her nerves. She nudged him hard, and he finally stopped. Stargazer glared at him, and he rolled his eyes. Stargazer wasn’t even listening to her parents anymore, and the princess looked down at her paws, which was extremely boring. She sighed, and swished her tail.

Stargazer caught a wolf staring at her, and she glared at her. The wolf looked quickly away, and she rolled her eyes. The strange wolf whispered something to her friend, and he smiled at her. Stargazer kept glaring at the 2 wolves, and the both where looking at her and then to her mother.

She finally realized Peril was yelling at her, and Stargazer saw that Peril was yelling out her name.

Stargazer gulped in embarrassment.

“Err… Yes mother?” Stargazer said in a tiny voice, and saw that all the wolves where staring at her, some even laughing.

“Where you even listening to me, Stargazer?” Peril snarled at her, and she jumped back.

“Umm… err… Yes, mother.” Stargazer said, trying to look not embarrassed, and she puffed out her furry chest.

“What was I talking about, daughter?” The queen growled, her jewelry bouncing on her chest.

Stargazer’s eyes widened, and she heard Sundown snort. She quickly glared at him, and looked up at her mother again.

C’mon! You listened to some of it!

“That Fire Wolves are killing our guards.” Stargazer told her, looking at Sundown with a hopeful glance. He shook his head slowly, and Stargazer felt her heart lurch. She put her bushy tail close to her, looking at her mother’s fierce gaze nervously.

“I talked about that 10 minutes ago.” Peril roared, and she jumped back, frightened. Stargazer landed on her back, and Peril jumped off her throne, and the really tall queen standed over her, almost snout to snout.

“Go check on the wolves in the dungeons.” Peril snarled. “Then go spend the rest of the day in your room.”

Stargazer opened her mouth to say something, but Sundown nudged her. She nodded, her head down, and walked out of the throne room. All the wolves where staring at her, and she glared at them, and they quickly looked away.

She walked out of the room, and two guards with spears where right by the entrance, and they stood in attention when they saw her. Stargazer nodded, and they calmed down. She knew both of their names, Luna and Dark. They wore helmets with a shape of a wolf howling at the moon on them, and they had chest armor with the same logo.

“What are you doing out?” Dark asked suspiciously, he looked straight into her eyes, which her uncomfortable.

“Call her princess, Dark!” Luna said, glaring at him, her eyes glowing since there was a torch by them. Dark simply rolled his eyes, and Luna snarled at him, her teeth bared.

Stargazer ignored them and grabbed at torch. She clutched it in her paw and went towards the dungeon door. It was locked, and 2 guards where guarding it, so she’d have to ask permission. Stargazer saw that there where fewer wolves here, and it was in the darkest part of the castle. A line of pictures was on the far wall, it was a wall of all the pictures of all the queens. and the one on the farthest right was Queen Peril, looking much younger and had a smile that was a little creepy. The one by her mother had also a creepy smile, and Stargazer guessed this was Queen Starry, her grandmother. The ones of the kings where on the other wall, on the wall where the dungeon door was. She spotted Raven looking unhappy, he looked like he was glowering.

Stargazer walked up to the guards, all them she did not know, and she puffed out her chest, to look menacing. It seemed to work.

“Hello. Mother assigned me to go to the dungeons to check down there. If you think I’m a con artist, ask mother.” Stargazer growled at them. They nodded quickly, took out a key, and opened the door with a satisfying click. She went down, and on the bottom she could only see blackness. It looked almost creepy, but she went down anyway, not showing any nervousness to the guards who where watching her intently.

It was a long way down, but she finally got to the bottom, with her torch, the only thing that she could see anything with. There was all different types of wolves, Ice, Water, Fire, Earth, Storm, Sand, Sky and Wind. They all looked miserable, and she almost felt bad for them. But one wolf caught her eye, and Fire Wolf with deep red fur, and his eyes where orange. He had a scar on his snout, and a tear in his ear. He also had a chest plate with a picture of fire on it, and a helmet with the same logo. Stargazer felt the urge to talk to him, so she walked towards him, and the Fire Wolf snarled.                                                                       “Stay away from me, Shadow wolf!!! I’ll fight ya with all my might!” He snarled, glaring at her so intently that she jumped a little. Stargazer felt so bad for him, and she shook her head.

“Don’t worry.” She smiled. “My name is Stargazer. What’s yours?”

What?! Did I just say that? Why, why, why! He is just a Fire Wolf! But he is so gorg-

Stargazer blocked the thought, and growled softly to herself.

The Fire Wolf looked surprised, opening and closing his mouth. He shook his head, his spiky red fur bristling.                                                                     “Um… I’m Torch. Torch of the Fire Wolves. I’m a loyal soldier to my queen.” He said, puffing out his chest. Stargazer smiled.

That’s something I’d do. I want to free him so badly…

“Hello Torch. Mother ordered me down here, Queen Peril, since I was not polite in her speeches. They are really long, and annoying.” Stargazer joked. Torch smiled, then he looked surprised.                                                                   “Wait, you’re a princess? Could you get me out of here?” Torch asked her excitedly, his tail swishing. He began making a fire ball in his paws, then threw it at the cage bars. Stargazer shook her head and sighed. Torch’s face fell, and glared at her.                                                                                                      “I’m sorry! Mother would get so mad at me if I free you. She might even murder me! I dunno!” Stargazer cried, and Torch nodded slowly, and looked up at her, his orange eyes sad. He sat down and put his tail around his legs, and looked down at the floor. The princess suddenly put on her powers to see what he was thinking about.

I thought for sure this pretty Shadow Wolf would let me out! Well, I kinda want to hang out with her more. Stargazer seems… Interesting.

Stargazer turned off her mind reading powers quickly, and she felt her skin under her fur growing hot. She shook her head.

Ugh, c’mon Stargazer, stop this…

Then, a thought suddenly came to her. I should really free him. He looks so sad…

                Stargazer looked up at him.

“I’ll let you free for a hour, then you have to come back in your cage.” Stargazer growled at him.
