Chapter 9 - Tears of Memory (2)

Chapter 9 - Tears of Memory (2)

“What the hell was that thing?! Suddenly busting the door of the tenth stage open and grabbing the Shade!” (Cassius)

“It might be the boss. There’s really no particular record of it at the guild, since the oldest record of someone tried to conquer this dungeon is already fifty years ago.” (Clare)

“How about the church? Is there any records about it from the old scriptures, Miss Saintess?” (Dolph)

“There’s nothing that I know of. But there is a record about a black monster that appeared during the era of healing. It is said that there was once a monster that devours lost souls of the land. Whether it is up the coldest peak of a mountain, inside the hottest magma of a volcano, or even below the deepest part of the sea, it will survive just to eat the souls that still dwells in the land of the living.” (Saintess)

“So are you saying that, that thing is the monster that is mentioned in the record?” (Scorpius)

“It is still just a guess, but since it fits the environment where we are now, we may not be too far.” (Saintess)

“Your Excellency, is it okay to share that information?” (Guard 2)

“Don’t worry, as long as it is not made in public, it won’t cause panic to the people.” (Saintess)

“If you say so, I apologize for questioning you Your Excellency.” (Guard 2)

“It’s okay. Let’s go back to the topic now.” (Saintess)

“Then Miss Saintess, is there a way to defeat that thing?” (Crystallis)

“There are no clear records that says it was defeated, but there is one, a moment where that monster ran away from a fight. Maybe we can learn how to defeat it from that.” (Saintess)

“Then please tell us the whole story about it.” (Rufus)

“This will be a long story, we need to replenish ourselves with food first. We will continue this meeting after dinner.” (Saintess)

“We might as well. Okay everyone, there’s still a few minutes before dinner, it’s a good thing that the other adventurers presented to cook for us. Rest first and we will continue for the story later. This meeting is dismissed!” (Clare)

After the shocking event that happened, we immediately helped the other members of the expedition team. The Saintess and her guards removed the effect of the Shade’s skill, and one by one they began to calm down. The girls group went to look for a place to rest, while we took care of the unconscious people.

After finding a good spot to rest, we set up a camp, brought the unconscious soldiers and adventurers, then the weakened ones. We took guard of the area while the Saintess continued to monitor the others, and her guards are setting up a barrier using barrier stone that the church brought. After doing everything and resting for a bit, we moved to a corner for an initial meeting and here we are now having dinner.

“Storage magic is really convenient huh? Even if it is a magic tool, it can really carry a lot of stuff.” (Rufus)

“It is expensive though, since space magic is a lost type of magic that only a few magic users can do. If someone wants to learn it, it will take at least five to six years just to learn the basics.” (Clare)

“And since it’s that valuable, the price of a small storage is equivalent to the price of a small house. Since not only the space magic enchantment, but also the materials that was used to handle it are not ordinary materials. At least gold or platinum rank monster materials are needed to create the magic tool.” (Crystallis)

“What?! How much money did the church spend for 4 subspace storage magic tool?!” (Flora)

“Estimated price might be worth a small mansion of an aristocrat. And there are many more in the Mother Church at the Holy Kingdom.” (Saintess)

“Miss Saintess! What are you doing here?! Aren’t you eating together with your entourage?!” (Clare)

“I was, but I came here to tell you all something before the meeting starts.” (Saintess)

“Is it related to what your guard said?” (Dolph)

“Yes. The records of the church are actually secret to the public since it holds information that may cause uneasiness and panic to the people. Especially, records of monsters that are more dangerous than any of the platinum danger rank monsters that we know.” (Saintess)

“We are going to fight a monster like that?!” (Lyra)

“Isn’t it better to return to the surface and report this to the guild? Or much better, we should report it to every kingdom.” (Lux)

“Unfortunately, we can’t do that. It will exposed the whole continent to the danger and the tension of knowing that there is a monster that is classified dangerous than any platinum rank monster will create a bigger panic than what we will expect.” (Saintess)

“Then how will you keep it a secret if we already know its existence? You can’t just kill us since you need us to conquer this dungeon, and I know you won’t pay us since we might demand more than what the church can.” (Adrienne)

“That’s the other reason why I came over here. I want you guys to sign up a ‘Secret Promise’ to me. The content will be, keeping quiet on everything that you will learn about the hidden records of the church, the punishment will be instant death.” (Saintess)

“And you think we will sign a contract that will endangered our very own lives?” (Adrienne)

“I know you won’t, but we will compensate all of you. Everyone here should know about the ‘Holy Elixir’ right?” (Saintess)

“That super expensive elixir that can heal almost everything?! Be it critical injuries, dangerous curses, or even the most deadly illnesses?!That ‘Holy Elixir’?!” (Crystallis)

“Yes, we will compensate everyone with one elixir each and when you want to buy a ‘Holy Elixir’ in the near future, we will make so that you will just pay half of the original price.” (Saintess)

“Your Excellency, is that alright?! That’s a special type of potion that only the church knows how it is made, right?! And the number of elixir that can be sold per year are only a hundred, that’s why even aristocrats always make reservations to certain stores!” (Frederick)

“It’s alright. It won’t affect the sales of the church, and a few loss is much better than losing everything. Does that took care of your concern Sir Adrienne?” (Saintess)

“Yeah, that should be enough.” (Adrienne)

“Thanks for your concern.” (Saintess)

The Saintess smiled with relief as she looked at me. I don’t know what is it but it seems like she still has something to hide about this whole conversation. As she talked about the benefits of both sides about signing the contract, everyone, except for the idiot trio who’s not around us, accepted to sign the ‘Secret Promise’ for the sake of keeping the peace of the public. In the end I agreed to sign the contract and as the conversation is coming to an end, we finished our dinner and walked our way to the meeting room for the story of the black monster.
