Prologue
He had finally done it. In the last hours of the universe he, the lone survivor, had done it. He looked at his work as he said aloud "This is it. It will work." He grabbed the designs and got to work. Muttering to himself all the while.
As he began putting the formations in place, channeling the power he had aggregated from every other living thing he narrated as though he had an audience.
"Ladies and Gentleman, Beasts and Creatures, Friends and Foes, I present the magnum opus of our work. The Equalizer, The Rules, The Structures, The EVERYTHING. This combination of every single piece of knowledge, of everything we've done. THIS IS IT." And then quieter, to himself "This is my system, this is what I worked for. If this gives others a chance to do it better, to do it RIGHT, then it was worth all the bloodshed."
He put the final stones in place, took his last breath, and pushed every ounce of his very life into the work. As his vision faded to black he saw it. A screen with the words he'd waited so long to see "System Initialized" and he died, content with his work.
Chapter One
This text was taken from Royal Road. Help the author by reading the original version there.
What he had not expected was that he didn't die. Well, he did, but he was immediately and instantly reborn. He could see it, The Logbook. It told of the actions of the system. He had designed it that way. There were only two records listed.
LOG START
ACTIVATE OVERSEER
He reached out as though to tap on the entry for ACTIVATE OVERSEER and before he noticed that he had no body with which to reach, the log expanded into the subscreens he had painstakingly formatted.
ACTIVATE OVERSEER
- System Overseer needed.
- Zero candidates located.
- Searching history. System cites only one living entity.
- Entity has passed within 0.004 seconds. Entity eligible for rebirth as OVERSEER.
- System lacks OVERSEER to approve, System proceeding without approval via Protocol One.
- Entity has forgotten name, Entity labeled as OVERSEER.
- End Log
As he read the words, he realized that no one had used his name in such a long time that even he could not remember it. He had been alone for so long. "So Overseer it is then. Better a title for a name than no name at all I suppose."
LABEL ACCEPTED
The words flashed in front of him as quickly as he had said it.
OVERSEER POSITION ACCEPTED
And yet more words appeared. The screens were stacking up, he'd have to fix that.
SYSTEM SENSES PROPOSED CHANGES
MAKE CHANGE Y/N?
He wanted the screens to be more usable, so he approved without a second thought.
SYSTEM CHANGE INTEGRATED
SCREENS NOW MERGING
NEW FORMAT WILL COMBINE LIKE NOTIFICATIONS
And a new screen appeared before him. A nicer screen. One that had the history of his acceptance combined into a single frame. He liked this screen.
SYSTEM CHANGE SECONDARY APPROVAL NOTED
SYSTEM METHOD OF ADAPTING TO SUGGESTED IMPROVEMENTS DEVELOPED
MAKE CHANGE Y/N?
He had a feeling he was going to be answering that question a lot.
