Ch. 5 - Preparations

[13:12] [11/1/102] [Main Gate, Snowpoint City, Glaciera Country, Yaokurov Continent]

Ted thought for a minute before asking, “Can i see the catalogue for the classes i can take, i’m thinking of being a sub member so i can study a little.”

“Surely, just a second.” Said Ally before getting her laptop back on and going to a site and turning it over towards Ted.

Ted started reading the titles and a little bit of their description and saw that they would probably answer a lot of his doubts, he just needed to finish five 1 star quests a month and he would be paying for these classes.

“I like these classes a lot, but why are all of them on the weekends?” He asked Ally.

She thought for a second before saying, “Well, usually tamers use the week for completing quests and training, so it doesn’t leave that much time for the studying part, which ends up happening in the weekends and it also has been going on like this for centuries, so everyone new that enters kind of adapts to this.”

“I see, i think i’ll take the second contract you said then, do i have to sign anything?” Ted said while picking up Spirit that was trying to get his attention and putting her back on his head.

Ally promptly got a contract in her hand which Ted signed, she then stored and started typing in the laptop some changes in his register, a minute after she started this, someone brought a small plastic card from one of the doors behind her and left it on her side.

She picked it up and gave it to Ted, it was the size of a bank card and had a picture of him with Spirit in his head on the top part of it, he saw an identification number, date of birth, name of his parents and some more info on it, in the back of the card he could see the symbol above the guild’s door carved in gold on the black card.

He thought while seeing the card before asking, “When did you take my photo?”

Ally chuckled before saying, “That’s a secret, but your photo came out pretty nice with Spirit on your head. Anyways, with this card you can access the online site of the guild on the internet, check the courses you want to attend and when they will be occuring, you can also mark them here with me, it’s also used to pay for the meals and the items in supply shop. When you want to register a quest, just pick one of the papers on the that board and bring it to me. Since i’ve been the one to register you in the system and the teaching program, my task is to help you through the 6 months you are here with us, i’ll mostly be here for any questions you have about the guild too.”

Ted nodded before saying, “Well, let me register the classes i want to go this weekend, i want ‘Basics of the Soul Energy’, ‘What is an Affinity’, ‘Raising Beasts from Infancy’ and ‘Physique Training’ for this weekend, i’ll choose new ones the next week.”

Ally quickly pulled up his page while explaining how he could access and mark his classes by himself, she only took around 2 minutes to finish everything.

“Those are some good classes you’ve picked, just try to choose ‘Process of Learning new Abilities’ and ‘What Truly is my Talent’ later on, everyone says it’s a necessity for new awakened.” She said getting a nod from Ted.

“So, do i also get a room while i’m here? I wanted to stay so i can check some stuff in the city and can you tell me if there’s a place you store some books that are good for newly awakened?” Asked Ted while checking the site of the guild to see if there was anything he wanted to ask her about.

“You have to pay for a room if you want to stay in here, but since you’re a semi-member now it comes with a good discount, you only need to pay 10 coppers for a night. We do have a library in here too, you just need to go through the second door from here on the left wall for the library and the living quarters is in the 1st door on the right when entering from the main door of the hall, just go in the counter in there and ask for a room when you need it.” She said while pointing their directions.

Ted gave a bright smile to the blond elf and said, “Thank you, Ally. You’ve helped me a lot, see you later.” He then went in the direction of the exit of the building.

Ally slightly blushed after he left and thought, ‘Oh my, this boy is quite charming, i feel like i’ve become younger somehow after talking to him.’

[13:17] [11/1/102] [Snowpoint City outskirts, Glaciera Country, Yaokurov Continent]

A black crow could be seen flying above a cabin in the outskirts of Snowpoint City.

It quickly angled itself downwards and reached the ground in a few seconds, this crow was around 3 meters tall and had an 8 meter wingspan, each feather looked like they were metallic and hard, it was wearing a saddle and a human could be seen on top of it.

The human was wearing white camouflaged clothes and a white balaclava, he quickly got off the bird and gave it a pet and a treat while both of them went closer towards the shed.

He came closer to the door and knocked on it, after a minute he didn’t get a response he said to the crow, “Maybe Ted went to the city and will come home in some time, what do you think about staying some time here waiting for him?”

The crow nodded and perched itself on the roof of the building while the man supported his body on the wall at the side of the door.

Then 30 minutes passed, 1 hour, 3 hours, 5 hours.

“He’s not coming back home? Maybe something happened to him? Crowy, let’s go to the city and see if he’s anywhere in there.” His partner immediately gave him a sleepy look but helped him anyways in coming back towards the city.

[18:53] [11/1/102] [The Frozen Forge, Snowpoint City, Glaciera Country, Yaokurov Continent]

“Please, old man, can’t you help me with this one, i really need a new scythe now that i’m out of the corps.” Said Ted while kneeling in front of an old dwarf.

This dwarf was 1.2 meters tall, had long white hair and beard from his advanced age, his ears were full of earrings and 3 beast tattos were proudly showing themselves in his left arm, these tattoos were of a polar bear, a dragon and a shark. His clothes were fully soaked from sweat due to the heat of the place and also frozen in some parts due to a specific process they made in this forge.

The place they were in was the entrance to said forge, having a lot of weapons, armors and other items that were sold by the clerks this old dwarf’s had contracted. The place was fully made of volcanic rocks molded in large slabs that were connected with cement to hold the building up, the only wood he could see in here was one that looked and had the same hardness as a rock, the items made out of it were the big counter for payment and the dozens of holders for the items in the store at this entrance-like room of the forge.

The dwarf evilly grinned while looking at Ted, “You little fucker, i’m sure you remember what you did to the scythe i made last time.”

Ted shivered and remembered the damned giant lizard that was following him in one of the hunts, he could only hide in a place and when the lizard got close to him, he was able to put the scythe in his….. hole…. and killed him with that, the scythe didn’t stop smelling like shit for weeks and he changed it later on. Not the best memorie Ted had.

“I promise this time it will be different, you know i had to do that or i would be killed, the weapon helped me in the end even though i didn’t use it anymore after that.” Ted said while looking up pitifully.

Spirit was to the side looking at this interaction with an analyzing gaze, she was trying to understand how the dwarf made her dad so submissive while she sat in top of the counter.

The dwarf sighed and said, “You’re kinda right with that, it doesn’t mean you changing my scythe for some random blacksmith one is something that i’ll let you forget, but i guess i owe you a little bit anyways. I’ll help you, i already have your measures so this will be pretty easy for me.”

Ted quickly got up and hugged the old dwarf while lifting him up and saying, “Thank you, boss! How much is it going to be for this one?”

The dwarf rapidly got Ted out of him and said, “You know there’s no need to pay for this, just get here tomorrow so you can check the size of it and the blade so i can make some finishing touches depending on what you want.”

Ted nodded and said goodbye to the old dwarf before getting Spirit who was looking at him strangely, but he shrugged it off and left the forge.

Today had been a pretty good day overall, he had awakened, met Spirit, got some new classes to wait for and study later, got some items he needed in a daily basis for the hunts that he catiously stored in the box in a dark alley and a new scythe. The only thing left was coming back to the guild and seeing the library, checking what he could buy at the supplies shop and go to the living quarters to sleep, tomorrow was saturday and also his first class day which will be ‘Physique Training’ in the morning.

Ted made a quick beeline towards the guild and entered it, it was full of people, way more than at the time he entered it earlier today, ‘I guess people are more used to having dinner in here after doing their quests of the day, that orc probably makes some good food too since these plates full of food i’m seeing are being eaten in the speed of the light, i should probably eat before going to the library and living quarters too.’

He passed through the hall and reached the restaurant front, it was full of people and even more were bringing plates full of food towards the tables in the hall, the smell was better than anything Ted had ever eaten before, it was even better than Kev but he’s not going to tell him that.

He quickly approached the woman orc he noticed before, she had light green skin, black eyes, red long hair, some golden earrings on both of her ears, many golden rings were on both of her hands and she was his height while being muscular as hell. He then saw that there was some kind of menu in front of the counter she was in, above it was written ‘Friday’s Dinner’ and it describe only three plates in it, the first one was ‘Carnivore: Ribs, T-bone, protein shake’, the second one was written as ‘Mixed: Rice, Ribs, salad, orange juice’, the third was ‘Vegan: Rice, plant protein, spicy sauce, salad, orange juice’.

Ted quickly came closer and said, “Hello ma’am, can i have the mixed one?” He said while the orc nodded and picked up some type of box and put it closer to him while saying, “Card.”

He quickly understood what she asked for and put his new identification card closer to it, the box beeped after he almost touched it and some paper started being impressed on the top most part of the box. She quickly took the paper and put it in a table to the side, it was close to a little window which anyone in the kitchen, where the big orc was in could get said paper.

She turned back to him and said, “Table, wait, soon done.” Ted nodded and got himself a table that was pretty close by the restaurant area, he didn’t know how the people with his food would find him but he could only wait for now.

After 10 minutes spent playing with Spirit in his table, a man came closer to where he was and said, “Hey there, you’re the newcomer that just ordered food right? Here ya go!” Said the man while putting a big plate in front of him along with a side one and a jar of orange juice.

Ted looked at the portion size and was amazed at the size of it, he quickly asked the man who brought him the food, “Why is there so much food and how did you know this was for me?”

The man chuckled before answering, “I’ve been here for some years so i know almost everyone that orders food from us, the chef also has a neat talent that allows us to check some stuff too, so i can also check that you’re new since this is your first time ordering food in here. I’m sure you’re gonna love it, the food boss makes is amazing so everyone kept asking for bigger sizes so he permanently made them this way, enjoy your food!” Said the man while running back in the restaurant area.

Bruno shrugged it off before he started eating his food, he quickly ate the salad and felt it was very fresh and had a perfect quantity of seasoning addded to it. He then picked the now empty plate and put some of the meat so Spirit could taste the food too.

They quickly started eating and couldn’t stop taking bite after bite of it, ‘Oh my fucking god, this doesn’t even feel like it has soul energy but it tastes even better than the beast meat i’ve eaten.’ Bruno thought while both he and Spirit devoured the mountain of food in the plate in under three minutes.

“Burp, damn, this is heavenly.” Ted said while both he and the little owlet where patting their full bellies at the same time.

He then spent a few more minutes to bring himself back from the food heaven feeling before going to the supplies shop in the hall.

The moment he got closer to it, one of the goblin’s came in his direction and said, “Hello sir, how may i help you today?”

The goblin was small, reaching around 80 centimeters tall, he had green skin, a bald head, golden earrings and one of the biggest noses he had ever seen.

“Well, i’m new around the guild so i wanted to check what i could get from here along with how much i can spend with my card.” Said Ted while holding up his card.

The moment he was showing his card, he noticed it wasn’t even in his hand anymore and was actually in the goblin’s hand who checked it and gave it back before saying, “Since you’re a semi-member, your monthly stipend in here is 10 silver, it feels like it’s a lot but let me tell we have some really good stuff in here, just check it out what we have in our deposit in this tablet.”

Ted carefully picked up the thin tablet while squinting his eye at the stealthy goblin, he started going through the catalogues and saw way too much stuff of diverse categories, at least there were filter in the tablet so he didn’t get that lost while checking most items.

From fruits to some damn cyborgs you could enter them yourself, he could see some stuff he couldn’t even dream of buying right now, but he started closing in some of the items he felt were necessary and that he couldn’t easily buy from the normal market, he then noticed some he forgot to buy before and swiftly though of picking them up in here.

“I want two of these never losing edge knives (1 silver coin each), one following map of the grand size(2 silver and 50 copper coins), also give me 5 of these healing potions(40 copper each), three beast blood holders(10 copper each), the ever snowpoint city compass(30 copper) and also one of the expanded water bottle of the owl model(55 copper).” Ted said while feeling hurt from spending money that would normally be used by himself in months, but he felt those were some good items that were even more pricey outside of here and he was going to gain these 10 silver coins every month anyways.

He then gave the tablet back to the goblin who clapped his hands and out of nowhere he noticed the sly green humanoid was holding the black box already printing a paper from it, “Thank you for your patronage, the cost of everything rounded to 7 silver and 65 coppers, i’m going to get your items in a jiffy.” Said the goblin while hopping back to the counter and going in the box over box door behind the human.

Ted waited for only a minute before the goblin came back with his items, he rapidly put them in a small bag he bought before so he didn’t show his box openly to others and quickly went away from the small green thief who was waving his hand and fake crying.

‘Well, the next stop is the library Ally told me about, i wonder what i can find in there.’ Said Ted while following the path she directed to him before.

He went in the side door that she pointed and walked through the corridors, those had the same design as the hall he was in, for 1 minute he passed by a lot of side doors that had names and photos of people he didn’t know before he finally reached a grand entrance at the end of everything.

The door in front of him was made out of books, the walls were made of books, the floors, everything was a book. On the sides of this strange door were two cats sculpted out of dark wood with some kind of red gem in their eyes.

He briefly entered this library and saw that at least not everything was a book, there was a single wood counter in the side of the entrance with a human in it, he got in and the grand space around mesmerized both him and Spirit. If you ever thought of a book is everything labirynth, this is it, he was wondering how anyone could find anything in here before hearing something.

“Cough.” Ted heard from the man that was behind the counter, he was wearing a brown suit, had a full black beard, short black hair, brown eyes, really thin metallic round glasses.

Ted then came closer to the man that felt like he had some decades on top of him and respectfully said, “Hello, i came here to check if i could find anything interesting to a newly awakened.” He said while giving the man a soft bow.

He saw him fix his tie that was already arranged perfectly before and said, “Mister, you’ve come to the best place for the information you seek. If you need my help to find some books for you, just say it.”

Ted then looked at the infinite book maze and back to the perfectly suited up man and said, “I’d love for your help in this, i really wanted some books that explained how to better help this little one’s growth…” He said while patting Spirit, “… and also some that revolving in what an awakened is.”

The man clapped his hand and two red furred small cats appeared to his side, “Surely, my lovely companions will swiftly found the ones i’m thinking about for you, just wait a second.”

Ted then saw both of the cats nod to him, befor transforming themselves into wind and going inside the maze itself, after 10 minutes, 4 books appeared in front of the man in his front.

“These four books will definitely teach you some good knowledge, this one is about the owl species anatomy and physiology, this one revolves about beast nutrition in general, this one is about soul energy manipulation, which i also recommend you mark the class for beginners in soul energy that is happening tomorrow too, and the last one is a recommendation from me, you have a month to read them and bring them back, any weekly delay will result in a penalty of 1 silver per book, see you later Ted.” Said the man while smiling towards him.

He felt a little goosebumps since he never told him his name, he quickly picked the four books before going away from the library and in the direction of the living quarters.

Apparently the first to third side doors in the hall were the living quarters for different sized humanoids, the first door was the human sized ones, the second was orc sized and the third door was for the demi-giants beings that came here sometimes.

He went into the corridor he already knew the direction of and fastly reached the counter that holded many keys behind it, behind said counter was also a sleeping dark elf that had her face on top of a plate of food.

“Hello?” Said Ted while also poking the woman a little, she quickly got up with almost closed eyes and immediately focused on Ted.

She gave a bright smile that was ofuscated from the whole food in her face and said, “Well there, hello handsome, what can i help you with in this beautiful night?”

She was wearing comfortable and baggy clothes mostly toned to blue, her hair was black, black eyes and her skin had the common gray tone her race had, she had no earrings or notable tattoos in her body.

Ted felt a little uncomfortable by seeing this scene but rapidly answered while looking towards the roof, “Can you register me a room for two nights.”

Ted then noted she answered in a confused tone, “Uh, sure, i’ll register you in a second.”

She then started typing in a laptop and got one of the keys for Ted.

Ted thanked her as fast as he could and almost runned away from her and into the corridors, he saw his key had the number 167 in it ,which probably meaned it was in the first floor of this area in the 67th room.

He quickly found it and entered it, the room was fairly simple, the ground was the same wood he saw in almost every place, the same cobblestone walls, a small bed to the right, a little desk in the left, after the bed was a small closet with a trashcan on it’s side and a window that was closed in the opposite wall of the door.

Ted picked up Spirit and immediately falled in the bed together with her while saying, “I’m pretty tired right now, let’s sleep already so we can finally get some rest after this long day. I need to ask where the bathroom is in here tomorrow and we also have the physique training in the that starts at 7 in the morning.”

Spirit gave a quiet chirp and arranged herself to the side of Ted in the bed, who smiled and caressed her while both of them fell asleep at the same time.
