Midnight Walk

Midnight Walk

After the comment about being Abyss made, the night tampered off. I kept to myself on a spare pile of rock that I put leaves over. The moss made me question just what I was. I had knowledge of creatures like humans, birds, fish. But was I human? I looked human, sounded human, definitely smelt human, discovered that after the long walk. But the moss seemed to think otherwise, and what was a dark blood? With all of these questions swirling in my head I turn over and face the wall. The ambient light from the moss helps me drift into sleep. It feels like I'm standing in water an inch deep. I look around and find its pitch black, the darkness seeming to try and suck me into itself. I sharply turn around thinking I could feel something looking at me. Of course the darkness didn't allow me to disprove if something was there or not. But the feeling of being watched constantly shifted like I was being circled. But it was getting closer, so close that I could swear there was a warmth to it. I was paralyzed with fear, whatever is in here with me has the home field advantage. I reach out a hand and snap up in my bed clutching at nothing. My body is caked in a layer of sweat so thick it was freezing. With a groan I rise up and walk out of the cave to the rocks. They sit halfway up the waterfall, an easy fifty feet to the dark liquid. The noise soothes me, makes me feel like it was the only thing I could focus on. I didn't hear Lj approach me, but I did feel his hand on my shoulder. My heart is still pounding at memory of the sensation of something in the darkness. With a nod of his head, we start to walk down the trail, away from the entrance. We walk for five minutes before he speaks up.

"I was there Cama, that darkness in your dream. I felt it in mine as well."

His voice was solemn, as if his words carried the weight of the world. I stop on the trail and take a seat on an upturned tree. When I fail to respond to him he continues on his own.

"It wasn't me you were trying to find in there though. It was strange, as if I was on the outside of it all. I could feel you, and I could feel it in the darkness. With Talia having her gift it's safe to say there are things we don't understand about this world."

"Well at least you understand more than you don't. Do you get it Lj? It's like I was born today when I try to think on memories before this it's just so."

My head starts to throb with my heartbeat, I rub my temples with the pads of my finger. The constant questions that never seem to have an end. All of it is just being thrown at me with so much speed it feels like I might snap.

"Cama. I'm not trying to say that I understand what's going on. Or even that I can relate to what you are going through. I didn't bring you here for a pep talk, I simply woke up when you did. And wanted to confirm that what I was and felt was not a vivid dream."

He gives me a look that says nothing of his feelings. His eyes blank as if the only emotion they could know would be annoyance.

"Trust me on one thing, I do not care if you live, or die. I care about my family, and I will protect them at whatever cost necessary. If that darkness finds us, if whatever was in it finds us. I will not hesitate to cut you lose and run with my kin."

After that we didn't say anything for a few minutes, we let the ambient noise of the forest wash over us. Of course I couldn't blame him for what he said. He was simply protecting what he felt like he had to protect. But in some way it did make me angry at the small man beside me. I didn't ask to be brought here and have darkness watching me sleep. Ralph and Talia had made me forget that in the end, I'm a stranger to these people. A crunch of twigs outside of the wall makes both of us turn. After the dream that we shared it's no wonder why we were jumpy. I drew both of my daggers, handing one to Lj with a gesture to be quiet. We approach the noise and see that the thicket wall had been hit by an arrow. The tip of the arrow just barely sticking through a large tree limb. With a nod from Lj we both slowly climb through the wall. The other side is no more accommodating for the eyes. The little light sent the world into a sea of grey that is almost impossible to navigate. Lj grabs my hand and puts it onto his shoulder and starts to lead. He weaves his way through the darkness with less effort than it would have taken me. I run into his back when he stops suddenly in front of me. It takes me a second to realize why he had stopped. When I had ran into him I didn't notice it at first but now that I can hear the blood drip it draws my attention. With a groan he starts to sway on his feet before falling back into me. Another arrow flies where his neck was a second earlier. I lay him on the ground flat and peak my head to try and get a clearer view. At the snap of a bow string I hit the floor, just in time to avoid my own arrow. The darkness annoys me, if only I could get a view of the area surrounding me. Maybe, just maybe I would be able to find out more of the situation. I pat Lj down and find the arrow imbedded in his shoulder. When I touch the arrow it sends a jolt much like the feeling I got with the moss. Unlike the previous sensation, this lingered along the hand touching the arrow. When I turn my wrist over, a dim light shines out almost blindingly with three words.

"Danger, Avoid Contact"

I turn my wrist back over not wanting the archer to get anymore lighting. And realize something in the process of this. The archer has only made shots at sounds, seemingly as blind as we are. To test this I get to my feet very slowly, making sure not to make a sound. For the first second I am terrified, if I'm wrong, if the archer can for some reason see, I'm dead. By the fourth second I am pretty comfortable in my theory. I slowly crouch back down until I can reach the forest floor. I gently pick up a stray branch that had fallen. I toss it ten feet away from Lj and myself and within half a second an arrow was sailing over the branch. In open combat this archer is leagues ahead of anyone in our group. If this situation can't be solved with combat there are other ways. I get into my stomach ensuring I am as flat as possible before I open my mouth.

"I surrender, you win. I have some daggers and clothes you can take what you wish."

There were no arrows in answer of my sudden outburst, which I took as a good sign. When five minutes pass without the archer saying anything I toss another branch into the woods. When there's no arrows for that either, I put my hands under Lj's armpits. It's not difficult to carry the smaller man, but with the dark it wore on me. The branches in this forest seemed to crowd together after a few feet. My foot snags onto one of these branches and soon me and Lj come crashing the the ground again. The familiar jolt goes up my wrist and when I turn my hand over my mind goes blank.

Race: Human, Deceased

Class: Undiscovered

Level: 0

I hover my hand over the other limbs I mistook as branches. Each body having the same reaction except for one.

Race: Human, Deceased

Class: Archer

Level: 0

This body seems to be the only one with its class visible. Could it be because I saw the class in action? Well I didn't see very much but an archer seems to be the only class I've seen alive so far. I hurriedly pick up Lj and rush through the forest, no longer trying to be wary. Somehow I managed to reach the thicket without another fall. I burst through the wall and drop Lj near the edge of it and crouch down, trying to catch my breath. Whoever the archer was back there, he must not have been chasing his kills. Which means that somewhere in the thicket of woods to the waterfall rocks. There was a camp, or shelter or something worth killing so many people. Lj's wound didn't seem to be bleeding too bad, containing most of the blood to his shirt. If I had to guess, this arrow was meant for my throat, which explains the lack of fatality. With a groan I pick him up and continue down the road towards the cave. When I reach the cave I yell out Ralph and Talia's name before dropping Lj. They immediately snapped out of sleep and half ran to him. With teary eyes Ralph examines Lj and let's out a deep breath.

"It's alright guys, the bleeding isn't too bad. If I had to guess he passed out from shock and the pain."

I let myself fall to the floor onto my behind while they fling questions my way. But the only thing in my head is one unanswered question. Why hasn't he finished the job?
