Chapter 5

# Chapter 5: The Ambush

As the final bell tolled, Nero found himself ambling beside Kai, the familiar creak of his worn-out shoes echoing in the near-empty corridor. The events of yesterday still felt like something out of a fevered dream, half-formed and unreal, but Kai's steady presence was a comforting anchor, a quiet assurance that it hadn't all been some fanciful delusion conjured by his tired mind.

"Hey, Kai," Nero started hesitantly. "I was thinking... maybe we could grab something to eat? My treat. You know, to say thanks for yesterday."

Kai raised an eyebrow. "That's nice of you, but you don't need to do that. Seniors shouldn't take treats from juniors just for helping out."

Nero's face fell, but then he remembered something. "What if it's from that new place, Burger Bliss? I heard they have this amazing triple-decker cheeseburger with bacon."

"Whoa, hold up," Kai interrupted, a glint in his eye. "Burger Bliss, you say? Well... I suppose it would be rude to refuse such a generous offer."

Nero grinned, pleased with his small victory. As they walked towards the restaurant, Kai began explaining some basic self-defense techniques. Nero listened intently, his mind racing with possibilities of how to integrate these with his unique abilities.

Their conversation was cut short as they turned a corner. Ahead, blocking their path, stood a group of ten tough-looking individuals. They weren't in school uniforms, and their intent was clearly hostile.

"Well, well," one of them sneered. "Look what we have here. A couple of school kids out for a stroll."

Kai stepped forward, positioning himself slightly in front of Nero. "We don't want any trouble," he said, his voice calm but firm.

"That's too bad," another gang member replied, cracking his knuckles. "Because trouble wants you."

One of the men stepped forward, cracking his knuckles. "We’re here for you, kid. You’ve been messing with the wrong people."

Nero’s heart rate quickened, but he kept his cool.

Kai replied, "I don’t know who sent you, but you’re making a big mistake."

The man chuckled darkly. "You should’ve stayed out of it. But now, we’re gonna have to teach you a lesson."

Without warning, they attacked.

Kai's body responded instantly. He squared his stance, hands raised—one near his face to guard, the other poised to strike. His eyes scanned the gang, calculating distances, movements, weaknesses.

The first thug lunged forward, hurling a wild swing towards Kai's head. With a deft sidestep, Kai slipped past the clumsy attack, delivering a precise right hook to the ribs. The dull thud of bone giving way echoed in the alley as the man folded, wheezing and clutching his side in agony.

Another brute charged from Kai's blind side, clearly intent on a ferocious tackle. Kai lowered his centre of gravity with the poise of a seasoned pugilist, widening his stance.

The thug's boots pounded the pavement, each thunderous step closing the gap. Veins bulged on his neck, spittle flying from his snarling mouth. Kai's muscles coiled. As the brute's meaty fist whistled through the air, Kai pivoted.

His hands found purchase on the attacker's shirt, fingers twisting fabric. In one fluid motion, Kai's foot slid back, his hips rotated, and he pulled.

Nero watched with surprise as the world became a smear of motion around that assailant. The man's eyes bulged, his mouth agape in a silent 'O' of shock.

A hint of satisfaction tugged at the corner of Kai's mouth as he released his hold, letting momentum do the rest.

In that suspended moment, Nero marveled at how such a large man could look so small and helpless.

Kai's arm shot out, a blur of tanned skin and lean muscle. His fingers grazed the stubble on the assailant's neck before his forearm made contact, pressing against the man's windpipe. In one fluid movement, Kai's bicep and forearm formed a vice, clamping down on either side of the attacker's throat.

The ruffian's eyes bulged, bloodshot and wild. His meaty hands clawed at Kai's arm, nails scraping flesh, but finding no purchase. Veins popped on his forehead as he struggled, face flushing an angry crimson.

Kai's free hand gripped his own wrist, reinforcing the hold.

The attacker's feet scrabbled on the ground, kicking up small puffs of dust. His mouth gaped like a fish out of water, desperately trying to suck in air that wouldn't come.

Through lenses smudged with panicked fingerprints, Nero watched the hulking attacker's struggles grow feeble. The man's eyelids fluttered like dying butterflies, and Nero was struck by a morbid fascination. He'd read about chokeholds in his martial arts manga, but seeing one in real life was entirely different. It was terrifying, yet he couldn't look away.

Time seemed to stretch like warm taffy. Each second felt like an eternity as Nero observed the life ebbing from the assailant's eyes. His mind raced, calculating how long it takes for unconsciousness to set in, how many brain cells die per second without oxygen. He swallowed hard, his throat as dry as sandpaper, wondering if he should start counting Mississippi's to track the time.

The thug's body convulsed before Kai released him, letting him collapse in a heap.

Kai moved with astonishing alacrity and finesse, his strikes and footwork a veritable whirlwind of motion. Kai systematically dismantled his opponents with ruthless efficiency. It was like watching dominos fall.

But the leader wasn't just another thug—he was a formidable opponent with years of experience.

The leader eyed Kai, his gaze razor-sharp and calculating. He paced in a slow, predatory circle, sizing up his challenger.

"So, you've got some moves, kid," the leader sneered, his voice a low, rumbling growl. "But let's see how you handle someone who's been in this game a hell of a lot longer than you."

Kai held his ground, muscles coiled and ready. "You've been sizing me up, but I've been watching you too. And I see a lot of weaknesses."

The leader let out a harsh laugh. "Big words. Let's see if you can back them up." He fell into a fighting stance, fingers curling into tight fists. "I've seen punks like you come and go. What makes you think you're any different?"

Kai narrowed his eyes, the air thick with tension. "I'm not like the others. And I'm not going anywhere until you and your goons are off these streets for good."

The leader let out a low, mirthless chuckle. "Bold of you to assume you'll be walking away from this." He crouched, weight shifting onto the balls of his feet. "Time to put you in your place, kid."

Kai and the leader collided in a blur of motion, fists and feet flying. The air crackled with the impact of each strike, a symphony of grunts and the shuffle of boots on pavement.

The leader's massive fist shot out, a piston of muscle and bone. Kai twisted, but the blow still caught him on the cheek, snapping his head to the side.

Nero winced as the leader's massive fist connected with Kai's cheek, the sound of the impact making him flinch. He wanted to call out, to beg Kai to stop, but the words caught in his throat, choking him.

Kai's lithe form twisted and turned, a blur of motion as he met the leader's onslaught. Kai's foot connected with the leader's ribs, a dull thud and a grunt of pain. The larger man staggered, eyes narrowing. He surged forward, grabbing Kai by the lapels and yanking him close.

With a mighty heave, the leader hurled Kai backward. Kai's back slammed into the wall, knocking the breath from his lungs in a ragged gasp. But even as he struggled to inhale, Kai's body moved on instinct, his knee driving up into the leader's gut.

The older man doubled over, wheezing.

When Kai retaliated with a vicious knee strike, Nero couldn't help but wince in sympathy for the leader, even as he marveled at Kai's skill. The larger man's grunt of pain made Nero's stomach churn, a queasy mix of anxiety and secondhand agony.

Nero watched the brutal clash, his limbs frozen in place as his heart pounded in his ears. He couldn't look away, transfixed by the sheer ferocity of the fighters' exchange.

As the two combatants grappled, Nero's palms grew clammy. He could practically feel the tension in the air, the sheer weight of their struggle pressing down on him. The wall at Kai's back made Nero's breath hitch, his fingers twitching with the desperate need to intervene, to somehow shield his friend.

But when Kai counter-attacked, unleashing a flurry of blows, Nero couldn't suppress a gasp of amazement. He watched, transfixed, as the leader buckled under the relentless assault, his defense crumbling. Nero's eyes widened, a newfound respect for Kai's abilities warring with his lingering fear.

In that moment, Nero felt both proud of his friend's prowess and terrified for his safety. He knew Kai was skilled, but the leader was no ordinary thug. As the clash continued to unfold, Nero could only hold his breath and pray that Kai would emerge victorious.

As the fight wore on, Kai began to tire. His movements slowed, his reactions dulled by fatigue. The leader, sensing weakness, launched a final, devastating attack.

Kai, summoning his last reserves of strength, dodged the haymaker. In one fluid motion, he grabbed the leader's arm and twisted, the sound of a bag of popcorn popping filling the air. The leader cried out in pain, his face contorted in agony.

Seizing the opportunity, Kai disarmed his opponent and delivered a crushing blow to the temple. The leader crumpled to the ground, unconscious.

Despite his victory over the leader, Kai found himself overwhelmed by the remaining attackers. He fought valiantly, taking down three more in quick succession, but the odds were heavily stacked against him.

Nero, frozen in fear, could only watch as Kai battled the overwhelming numbers. His abilities activated automatically:

[Rapid Regeneration activated]

[Iron Skin activated]

[Adrenaline Rush activated]

But even with these enhancements, Nero found himself paralyzed, unable to move or help. He watched in mounting horror as Kai, despite his remarkable skill, began to waver under the unrelenting assault. Each strike seemed to chip away at his resolve, leaving him increasingly vulnerable against the brutal onslaught.

Finally, with a sickening thud, Kai went down. He didn't get back up.

Nero's mind raced. This was worse than anything he'd faced before. All his previous bravado, his small victories, seemed meaningless in the face of this brutality. As the gangsters turned their attention to him, Nero felt a wave of despair wash over him.

The first blow came, then another, and another. Nero's abilities worked overtime, healing damage as fast as it was inflicted, but the psychological toll was overwhelming. As consciousness began to slip away, Nero's last coherent thought was one of profound sadness and regret.

Just before darkness claimed him, Nero saw a series of rapid-fire notifications from his AI:

[Emergency Protocol Activated]

[Unlocking Latent Abilities]

[Temporary Consciousness Override]

Then, everything went black.

---

Nero awoke to the sound of distant sirens. His whole body ached, but it was nothing compared to the crushing weight of what had happened. As his vision cleared, he saw the scene around him.

The gangsters lay scattered on the ground, unconscious and bloodied. Kai was sitting up, looking dazed but alive. And there, in the center of it all, stood Nero.

But something was wrong. As Nero looked down at his hands, he saw they were bruised and cut. His clothes were torn and stained with blood – some his, some not.

"Nero?" Kai's voice sounded far away. "Are you okay? What... what happened?"

Nero couldn't answer. The realization of what must have occurred – what he must have done while unconscious – hit him like a physical blow. He fell to his knees, trembling uncontrollably.

A notification appeared:

[Emergency Protocol Deactivated]

[New Abilities Unlocked: ???]

[Warning: User Psychological Trauma Detected]

But Nero barely registered it. All he could focus on was the overwhelming fear, confusion, and horror of what had transpired. As the sound of approaching sirens grew louder, Nero remained frozen, trapped in the grip of a trauma that would not easily fade.

In the back of his mind, a quiet voice – his own, yet somehow different – whispered, "The game has changed. But at what cost?"

---

The wail of sirens grew louder as police cars and an ambulance arrived at the scene. Nero, still in shock, barely registered the flurry of activity around him. Paramedics rushed to assess the injuries of both Nero and Kai, as well as the unconscious gang members.

"We need to get these two to the hospital immediately," one of the paramedics called out, gesturing to Nero and Kai.

As they were loaded into the ambulance, Nero's AI interface flickered to life:

[Rapid Regeneration in progress]

[Estimated time to full recovery: 2 hours]

[Warning: Concealment of abilities recommended]

Nero's mind raced. How could he explain his rapid healing? The paramedics were already looking at him with confusion, noting how his visible injuries seemed less severe than they initially appeared.

At the hospital, doctors and nurses swarmed around Nero and Kai, running tests and treating their injuries. Kai had suffered a concussion and several broken ribs, while Nero's injuries appeared to be mostly superficial bruises and cuts.

As the hours passed, Nero felt his strength returning at an alarming rate. He tried to feign pain and weakness, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to hide his recovery.

Meanwhile, in a quiet corner of the emergency room, two police officers approached Nero and Kai for questioning.

"Can you tell us what happened?" one of the officers asked, notepad in hand.

Kai, still groggy from pain medication, gave a brief account of the ambush. Nero, unsure of what had transpired after he lost consciousness, remained mostly silent, claiming shock and memory loss.

As the officers left to question other witnesses, Nero's AI interface displayed a new message:

[Information extracted from subdued assailants]

[Criminal organization identified: The Shadowhawks]

[Primary instigator: Julian Caldwell]

[Warning: High-level threat detected]

Nero's eyes widened in disbelief. Julian Caldwell? The name was vaguely familiar – a senior at their school, known for his charm and influence. But why would he send a gang after them?

Before Nero could process this information, a nurse entered the room to check on their vitals. Her eyes widened as she looked at Nero's chart and then at him.

"This... this can't be right," she muttered, rechecking his vitals and examining his now nearly-healed injuries. "Doctor! You need to see this!"

Nero's heart raced as he realized his secret was about to be exposed.
