It was finally my 12th birthday, and I almost couldn't contain my excitement. My mother had promised to buy me a piece of chocolate, a rare commodity given how hard it is to produce food in our village.
She came home exhausted and covered in soot per her job as a fire mage, but I pretended not to notice. I watched happily as she reached into her pocket and pulled out two squares of chocolate.
We sat at the table, and my mom sang while setting the chocolate on a plate. Right before I could grab my piece, the lights of our cabin flickered and went out.
My mother got up and inspected the light, taking out a dull mana crystal.
"Probably just got overworked, I told you not to leave the lights on."
She said as she looked back at me. "I'll just go buy another one tomorrow on my way back from the mine."
We sat back down and enjoyed our chocolate in the dark, before going to bed.
Stolen novel; please report.
The next morning, I woke up groggily to being shaken by my mom.
"Noah get up, we need to leave," she said as she lifted me out of bed.
"Why, what's happening?"
"It wasn't just our mana crystals that broke, the whole villages did."
She explained as I stumbled outside.
"How bad is it?" I asked.
"None of them are working," she said. "and its worse than that. Check your status."
I thought the word 'status' and my window appeared in my vision.
