...BEEP...
BEEP... BEEP... BEE-
Fear and worry was all I felt. What should have been joy and anticipation, instantly reversed by not even a sentence. Only two words. Before the doctor could even finish speaking, I knew... I knew and I denied it.
“She... She’s going to be Okay right?” my face going from worried to hysterical, just a sliver of madness showing through. “and our baby, our son!” Desperation permeated my voice, my hands visibly shaking.
The doctor just stood there blank faced, clearly used to this kind of scenario. His eyes full of pity and a shallow numbness. The look on his face told me everything I needed to know.
“You need to calm down Mr. Jones, that is hardly the worst of what I have to tell you.” The doctor said with a hint of hardness. Slowly, he walked forward, placing his right hand on my shoulder. His grip firm yet gentle. Our eyes met and the panic I felt earlier started to ease.

A certain level of quite filled the room, only my heavy breathing could be heard over the overwhelming tension.
The doctors grip on my shoulder tightened before it finally released.
“It was a miscarriage, your wife’s condition seems to have stabilized but there is still a slight chance of her going into cardiac arrest.”
Before I had time to comprehend all of what he said, tears began to pool around my eyes. Suddenly the world just felt too heavy. An overwhelming pain consumed my heart, becoming unbarable. Unable to stand any longer I fell to my knees. Grief taking over from the inside.
Half way between a croak and a moan I yelled out to my wife who lay there unconscious, hoping that if I screamed loud enough she would come back to me with that bright smile I never could get enough of. But reality persisted with its never ending cruelty.
