Chapter 5 A Fruitful Encounter

Chapter 5 A Fruitful Encounter

The creature saw and lunged at Jack with speed, they both struggle but Jack eventually was pinned down due to it's unexpected show of strength and took Jack by surprise.

Desperation welled up inside him, but Jack knew he had to keep his wits about him. As the monster's teeth clamped onto his armored arm, he felt an intense, bone-crushing pressure, each bite sending sharp jolts of pain through his limb. Beads of sweat formed on his forehead, and his heart raced as he grappled with the creature.

With every ounce of strength, Jack plunged the knife into the monster's neck repeatedly, the blade slicing through sinew and muscle. Dark, viscous fluid oozed from the wounds, but the creature remained relentless. It was clear to him that he had to aim for the head, the supposed Achilles' heel of these monsters.

Summoning his resolve, Jack shifted his focus and lunged his knife at the head, aiming for the eyes, the source of those malevolent, red glows. However, his knife, already strained from previous battles, snapped under the force of the blow. Jack, now weaponless, looked at Kate with desperation in his eyes.

"Kate," he gasped, "Help me!"

As the monster increased its biting pressure, Jack knew it was only a matter of time before the monster's teeth would reach his skin. In sheer desperation, he screamed to Kate for help, "Kate, aim for the head!" His voice was tinged with a sense of urgency and fear.

Kate, terrified but determined, ran to them and screamed as she stabbed the monster's head with all her might. With two knives now piercing the creature's head, it finally went limp. Jack, gasping for breath and heart still pounding, pushed the lifeless monster off him, a mixture of pain, relief, and gratitude washing over him.

Kate, who had come to his aid, asked, "Are you okay?" Jack opened his arm guard to inspect it, finding only a slight bruise. "Yeah," he replied with a heavy sigh of gratitude.

They both looked around and picked up the fallen flashlight. Kate observed the scene, noting, "They must be mother and son..." Jack glanced at the mother's body by the door and the son they had just killed. Then, they heard banging on the door. Jack's eyes widened.

"We made too much noise!"

He quickly grabbed Kate, and they hurried into the son's room. With urgency, they barricaded the door with whatever they could find. Jack knew it wouldn't hold them off for long. Kate suggested, "We can move across the rooftops!" Jack nodded, and they quickly gathered what they could from the son's room, including a school backpack. They emptied its contents and replaced them with the supplies they found.

Jack's eyes fell upon a picture frame on the wall, capturing a young boy with his fellow baseball team members. He couldn't help but stare at the smiling faces, momentarily lost in the innocence of a time now shattered.

Below the picture frame, he spotted a baseball bat. Jack's determination surged as he picked it up, realizing that's where the boy's strength from earlier had come from. With the baseball bat in hand, they made a makeshift rope out of bed sheets and prepared to descend to the neighboring rooftop, hoping it would provide them with a means of escape.

Carefully navigating the rooftops, their eyes fixed on the house they had just escaped. The broken door signaled the swarm that had come knocking, a relentless horde that showed no mercy. Jack, with the weight of the situation pressing down on him, couldn't help but wonder how many more threats they'd encounter before reaching safety.

He spoke softly, "They're swarming." Kate, still shaken by their close encounter in the house, whispered, "That was scary."

The tension in the air was palpable, and it weighed on them as they moved. Jack knew that their ordeal was far from over, that danger lurked around every corner in this world turned upside down.

He responded to Kate, "It's not over until we reach the motel," a grim reminder of the challenges they faced. With that sobering realization, they continued their treacherous journey back to the motel, shrouded by the dark embrace of the moonlight, moving silently through the night, uncertain of what the next moment would bring.

Back at the motel, David and Cristy were on edge, anxiously waiting for Jack and Kate to return. The minutes seemed to drag on as they scanned the dimly lit surroundings for any sign of their companions.

Cristy finally broke the tense silence, her voice laced with concern. "It's been more than an hour. I hope they're safe..."

David, his eyes never leaving the dark horizon, replied with confidence, "I trust that they'll come back safe. Kate has Jack with her, and he's a track and field athlete."

Kate's ability was a topic of doubt. She wasn't exactly known for her athletic prowess, and David's words reflected this doubt. "Wouldn't Kate drag Jack down?"

David countered with a hint of optimism. "I don't know, but having Kate with him would greatly increase their chances of survival."

Then, David remembered their earlier encounter at the clinic, where He had been pounced on by the relentless monsters. His voice grew softer but more determined as he continued, "Remember earlier at the clinic? I got pounced by those monsters, and by all means, it wasn't easy. It was strong, stronger than a normal human. If Jack was alone and got pounced, he..."

Cristy knew what David was getting at, even though the words hung heavily in the air. Silence hung between them, but David continued, his voice filled with conviction. "But he has Kate with him, so I believe they'll come back. Let's just wait for them."

She replied with a quiet affirmation, "Yeah..."

Together, they continued to watch the horizon, their eyes fixed on the ominous silhouettes of the monsters, hoping for the safe return of their friends. The night continued on, their patience tested by each passing moment.

As Jack and Kate skillfully navigated from one rooftop to another, they unexpectedly stumbled upon a source of light emanating from a house not far from their current position. Their curiosity was immediately piqued, and they decided to take a slight detour to investigate further.

Upon closer inspection, they noticed the window of the house cast a silhouette of a person inside. It was clear that this individual was not only alive but also seemingly well. Excitement welled up within them at the prospect of finding another survivor, and they ventured closer.

As they reached the house, they realized it was encircled by a sturdy metal fence that seemed to serve as an impenetrable barrier against the relentless onslaught of the monstrous creatures. The monsters outside clawed and pushed at the fence, their attempts in vain.

Jack and Kate were determined to gain entry and seek refuge within the house, driven by the hope of finding valuable resources, information, or, even better, a new group of survivors to join forces with. However, unbeknownst to them, a surveillance camera mounted on the exterior wall discreetly tracked their movements.

Jack took a deep breath and turned to Kate. "Let's take a look, Kate." She nodded in agreement. Together, they skillfully maneuvered their way along the rooftops until they reached the gate that led to the house they had been observing.

As they arrived near the gate, Jack decided to give it a try. He pushed with all his might, but it wouldn't budge. With a determined effort, he exerted even more force, but the gate remained resolutely shut. Frustration grew as their options dwindled.

As the monsters closed in on Jack and Kate, the situation grew increasingly tense. With their backs pressed against the unyielding gate, the creatures drew nearer, their menacing presence casting a looming shadow of dread. Jack's eyes darted between the approaching horrors, and the gate that seemed impervious to his attempts to open it.

The sense of impending doom hung heavily in the air. Jack muttered through gritted teeth, "Shit, there's no way out" It was a desperate moment, and time seemed to slow as the relentless pursuit bore down upon them.

However, a curious clicking sound caught Jack's attention. He swiftly turned, and to his amazement, the gate started to open, granting them a narrow escape route. Wasting no time, they rushed inside, but one of the creatures managed to slip through before the gate could close completely.

Jack reacted swiftly, delivering a powerful dropkick that sent the creature sprawling back onto the road. With a final click, the gate closed, separating them from the nightmarish dangers that lurked outside.

Both Jack and Kate released heavy sighs of relief, their hearts still racing from the perilous encounter. They turned their attention to the imposing house before them. Determined, they pushed open the front door and entered the dimly lit interior. As they ventured deeper into the expansive house, they were greeted by an eerie silence.

It was only when they reached the central area that they heard faint footsteps coming from the floor above. The silhouette they had seen earlier materialized before them, an IV stand in hand. He looked down at them and offered a cryptic greeting

"Welcome, guests, to my humble abode"
