Chapter 5: First Boss

Chapter 5: First Boss

Jean kept moving as she inspected the form. It was humanoid in appearance but the proportions were wrong with massive arms, almost touching the ground, and a torso too broad in the chest. Its legs were relatively short and barely lifted as it plodded forward. As it came closer, she realized it wasn't alone. Six normal zombies flanked it and she was astounded. It was huge, twice the size of the other zombies. Its skin was stone gray and had an odd crafted look to it.

Not taking any chances and since they were closer, she stood her ground, lifted her right gun, and aimed at the smaller zombies. They were just outside the effective range of her older guns but she wanted to see if there was more to the upgrade than just damage. Breathing evenly, she activated Fire Ammo and pulled the trigger calmly. Six shots to center mass, six burning corpses. She regarded the boss. It can't be that easy, she thought, lifting the same weapon and aiming for the chest. She squeezed the trigger.

A few things happened in a very short order that Jean had to mentally run back. First, the gun barked and a fire-shrouded bullet raced toward the giant zombie. Second, the boss monster lifted one of its giant hands and redirected the bullet into the ground where its spell dissipated. Last, the boss had a lopsided sneer plastered to its malformed face.

“Uh,” she articulated, her mouth open slightly. “Apparently, it isn't.” Absently, she noted that the slide on her right pistol was still closed, meaning the weapon wasn't empty yet. She took aim again, this time for a leg. Again, the thing's arm snaked in front of the projectile and blocked it. This time, the slide stayed open so she spun the pistol causing it to close. She still had the Fire Ammo in her left. “Alright,” she said, to herself.

She cracked her neck again as she thought. Perfect cover from the front and probably has a crushing hit with those arms. But it was slow to move around the battlefield. Wanting to test it, she reloaded the right pistol and moved to her left. The beast turned to follow, using its massive arms to change direction. Hitting on an idea, she began running in the same direction, causing the boss to plant one fist into the ground and move with the other. Just as its back fist was at its furthest point, she stopped and fired with her right, aiming for the chest. The bullet collided with dead flesh and staggered it back. With a roar of pain and anger, it charged at her. As it approached, she ducked under its left arm. Bringing her left pistol up, she fired directly into its side. Two burning holes appeared and the huge zombie stumbled. As it righted itself, she circled it, always looking at its back. More holes opened up and its arm buckled. It tumbled to the ground still bellowing. Spotting her chance and with one round left for Fire Ammo, she ran over. Lining up to make sure she didn’t miss, it turned just as she pulled the trigger. It entered the boss’s head in the forehead and carved it’s bloody pat through the back, lighting all matter inside alight. With one last breath, the zombie caught flame and burned to ash. The end of wave fanfare sounded all around her.

“Yes!” Jean exclaimed, raising her guns in the air and jumping. She whooped and celebrated. “Yeah, that’s right!” she screamed at the ash pile. “You and the undead horse you rode in on!” She looked at the Wave Complete message and was happily surprised.
