Chapter 5: The Gate

Chapter 5: The Gate

Cain looked towards the room entrance, the door was fully open, and no one was coming in or out anymore; everything looked calmer. A moment later, a figure walked in, a young nun; she slowly approached the stone gate; the most remarkable thing here was the object swinging on her hand; it emitted a bright white light but was not dazzling. The nun slowly placed the light beam down into a small pit in front of the stone gate; it disappeared into the pit as if it were swallowed. A few seconds later, the characters on the stone slabs gradually lit up from the bottom to the top; beams of light gradually emerged from the edges of the stone slabs and gradually reached the center. A moment later, the entire space inside the gate was filled with light, still bright white but not dazzling. Nea asked Gray:

* What is that light?

Gray took a drag of his cigarette and blew out a cloud of white smoke. Gray looked quite tense; it seemed like he hadn't slept for many days; dark circles around his eyes prove that you can still see it even though he's not wearing glasses. Or it could also be because he has to answer too many questions from Nea. After a few seconds, Gray began to answer:

* That's God's words. This space gateway operates in a few ways, and what you just saw is one way of travelling to another parallel Earth. There's a small hole right in front of the space gate, you need to drop that light in, and the gate will connect to the world we need to reach. There's a church below, where there's always a duty to pray. Of course, not every nun can hear the whisper of God, but she has to be exceptional. God is also busy with his affairs, so the number of people God chooses to speak with is very few. Not every time can one find such people; they are rare, even rarer than the number of people who can receive holy water.

Nea looked slightly surprised; Gray nodded and continued:

* That's right, even though God chooses them to listen to His words, it doesn't mean their bodies can receive the holy water. The result is that we must frantically search for someone else whenever a nun is near death. Luckily, this time we have found someone very special, she is the first female priest who can receive the holy water, so we have to protect her very carefully.

* Protect her?

* Nea, in stories like this, there are always bad guys.

* Bad guys? But why would someone want to release a monster that could destroy everything? Wouldn't they also die as a result?

* Unfortunately, there will always be people like that in this world. Some want to rule the world, some want to destroy and watch the world sink into flames, and some are so tired of life that they want to end everything with themselves.

Hearing that makes Nea feel cold all over. Is there anyone worse than evil? Have you ever really met someone like that before? Although I'm pretty negative, I understand it's terrible, and I've never wanted to harm anyone. Something suddenly crossed Nea's mind:

* Can those "bad guys" travel through the portal to sabotage the Seal?

Nea's question once again turned you into the center of attention. Everyone is looking at you, from Gray, Liana, Cain, Hyun, to the person in the black outfit. Only Violet seems to be the exception, as she appears lost in her sleepiness and intermittently nods off.

* Ah ha! That is a good question, boy!

Another unfamiliar voice echoes:

* Hey boss, glad to see you still here.

* Long time no see, Rain!

* What? We just spook this morning, boss.

* Oh! Anyway. I need a favour from you. This is Nea. I need you to guide him through everything for me.

* Ah ha! We have a new member.

Rain shook hands with a cheerful smile and greeted Nea:

* Ah ha! This kid has a firm handshake; this may be interesting.

Nea's impression of Rain is that he says "ah ha" quite often, but he is very cheerful and lively, which is different from the gloomy atmosphere that everything here brings. There is also another thing, the girl he met at the door. She was standing right behind Rain, looking quite nervous and shy. Yet, everyone around still avoids her like they avoid evil spirits. It's a confusing detail that has made Nea curious for a while, but he still has not dared to ask. The girl shyly speaks:

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

* H... Hello, everyone.

* Hello Blue, you don't have to be shy with us, relax. When I come back, I'll bring a souvenir for you.

Listening to Liana's words, Blue feels more excited and smiles back at Liana. The whole squad moves towards the stone gate one by one, with only Liana hesitating. She looks at Nea and gives a gentle smile, leaving Nea stunned as he realizes something. Although he had an initially scary impression of Liana, this time, Nea sees that she also has a gloomy look in her eyes, like the members of team 4 when they heard that he was Finix's son. Liana speaks her final words before joining her team:

* Keep it up, Nea. I hope we can carry out the next mission together, and we will all strive to find your father.

After saying that, she joined her crew. Nea felt uneasy in his heart and sensed they were also eager to find his father. Nea turned and asked Gray:

* Gray, what kind of person is my father?

* Your father was a very calm and collected person. He always cared for and led everyone here, especially his team. Team 4 was assembled by your father, and from the very beginning until the day he disappeared, he stood shoulder-to-shoulder with them. To all of them, Finix was like an older brother, a mentor, and a second father. They respected and loved him. I still remember vividly the day they returned from that fateful mission. It was their last mission with your father.

* Wait, were they with my father when he disappeared? So, they must know what happened, right?

Gray lit another cigarette, and Nea couldn't tell how many he had smoked since earlier. Gray's gaze directed towards Team 4, but Nea could sense that he was looking much further away. Gray continued:

* That's right, they did carry out that mission with Finix, but when they returned, they didn't remember anything. Someone had erased their memories of that mission. All we know is that Finix didn't return with them, and that's also all they know.

Nea's eyes had been unintentionally following his father's teammates for a while now. He understood why they looked so sad and seemed to avoid looking into his eyes. They had failed, they had lost his father, and they felt responsible for it. But in some ways, Nea is also happy because his father is still himself, no matter where he is. The images that Gray uses to describe him are still like what Nea remembers about his father. That gives him even more motivation to find him, no matter how difficult the road ahead may be.

Team 4 approached the nun, all bowing their heads in prayer, except for Violet, as the nun prayed for the team. Afterward, they all turned towards the space gate and, one by one disappeared into the light. The beam slowly faded away when all five of them had passed through.

Nea felt like he had just witnessed a miracle. Usually, this could only be seen in movies or video games. But now it had happened right in front of him. Nea was genuinely stunned and fascinated. Nea's feet suddenly moved, and he wanted to get closer to admire the mysterious phenomenon of the light that could connect different spaces. He couldn't take his eyes off the strange event unfolding before him. They had indeed disappeared; team 4 had travelled to another parallel Earth.

Nea clenched his fist to make sure this wasn't a dream. The sharp pain confirmed that this was not a dream. Nea took a deep breath and promised to take over his father's job and do his best to protect the Earth. He promised to find his father one day and bring him back. But Nea also feels a sense of urgency, as he doesn't have much time and must find his father as soon as possible. He doesn't want his mother to be sad any longer. Now, all he needs to do is follow the instructions of Gray and Rain so that he can be ready as soon as possible.

Gray had just finished talking with Rain when he turned around and saw Nea lost in thought in front of the space gate. Gray called out loudly:

* Nea, come back here!

Nea's soul felt like it was returning to his body, and he walked back toward Gray. But before he could take a step, something strange happened. Suddenly, a large shadow appeared beneath Nea. He immediately realized that there was a light shining behind him. Could Team 4 have completed their mission and returned? Could it be that time on different Earths is different? The answer came just a second later. Nea could see the surprised faces of Gray and Rain. Gray not only looked surprised but also became serious immediately. Nea saw Gray disappear in a moment and reappear right in front of him, reaching out to grab him, but it was too late. From within that beam of light, an arm had already grabbed Nea, and in an instant, before Gray could reach him, it had pulled him into the light stream and disappeared immediately.
