The Story So far
----------------------------------------
THE BEGINNING
In the dim, gray moments before the end, each of them stood on the edge of life, immersed in memories and regrets that tethered them to the past. For Whisker, a raccoon scraping by in Chicago, death was an unexpected horror—he died trying to offer a scrap of food to a homeless man but found himself trapped in a garbage compactor, his small paws unable to pry himself free. Hiroshi Tanaka, a businessman in Tokyo, died among strangers on a train platform, his last thoughts bitter with regret over missed calls from his estranged son. Ava Singh, a driven scientist from London, had met her end in the lab, overcome by an experiment on the edge of life and death gone horribly wrong. And then there was Felix Morales, a Mexican architect, crushed by a collapsing building he had cut corners to design, knowing that lives would be lost in that instant.
Aria Knight, a musician from Los Angeles, had given up everything for her career, only to find herself dying alone in a car accident, haunted by what she had sacrificed along the way. Mira Inoue, an artist from Paris, fell victim to a mugging gone wrong, stabbed and left to fall onto the train tracks, tragically realizing too late that her visions of death were real. And finally, Lucas Reid, a firefighter from New York, died as he had lived—saving others, rushing headlong into a burning building even as his life slipped away in the blaze.
Each of them was bound by the echo of their final moments, only to awaken in a world they had never seen before.

REBIRTH IN AETHERIA
Their eyes opened to the strange, mystical surroundings of a grand hall, unlike any Earthly structure they had known. They were no longer themselves, at least not in the ways they remembered. Whisker stared in shock at his own hands, realizing he had been reborn in human form, though with glowing sigils that pulsed with a foreign energy. Lucas, in contrast, found himself in the sleek, muscular form of a silver bipedal fox, his sharp eyes taking in the alien scene with a predator’s wariness. Ava’s presence had shifted into a dark, wraith-like form, her body misting like shadow and vapor, while Mira—a mere half-meter tall—hovered above, her new form reminiscent of a sprite, complete with shimmering blue wings.
Tanaka, the once-ordinary businessman, was now towering and muscular, connected to an enormous runic sword. Felix was transformed into a construct, his body part human, part mechanical, and Aria, once an indie rock musician, found herself as a naga with her human form blending seamlessly into her serpentine tail. But just as they began to comprehend their new bodies, the hall erupted into chaos. Heralds, the ritualists of Aetheria, were in a panic—the summoning had gone terribly wrong. These strangers from another world weren’t the legendary hero they had intended to summon; they were mistakes, unintended results of a flawed ritual.
Tensions grew even higher as agents of the Seven Houses—the powerful forces that now ruled the divided lands of Aetheria—appeared, their presence pressing down on the newcomers with a suffocating weight. The agents scorned the newcomers, deeming them unworthy, and sent a chilling message: these “mistakes” posed no threat. But before they could strike, Mirabelle, a silver-haired Aetherian and one of the more composed Heralds, mustered her power to create a protective barrier. She expelled the agents, and as silence fell, she invited the bewildered seven to explore Aetheria’s world and understand the stakes of the battle before them.

THE LAST BASTION: A CITY OF WONDERS AND WOES
With Mirabelle leading the way, the group ventured into the Last Bastion, Aetheria’s final free city. The world they stepped into was one of breathtaking contrasts, with creatures from Earth’s mythologies and beyond. Elves, sprites, dragons, fairies, and undead beings mingled in the bustling streets under a sky stained purple. As they wandered, they met Captain Aric, a tall, silver fox and the Last Bastion’s guard captain, who guided them deeper into the city’s history.
The Last Bastion had once been an art city called Weldron, but it had since transformed into a fortress—a refuge for survivors fleeing the Seven Houses, the realms ruled by the dark lords who had conquered Aetheria and divided it. Even now, the Bastion was teeming with refugees, each one bearing the scars of war and corruption. As they absorbed these grim realities, Aria noticed an uncanny ability to navigate the city, an intuition that was both thrilling and unsettling. They also learned that Mirabelle was engaged to a man named Everlight, who the city had mixed opinions about and was good friends with Aric.

But the peace was short-lived. Several soldiers in the marketplace were accosting refugees and threatening to take ration rations. Captain Aric, seeing the situation, confronted the soldiers, but was quickly ambushed. An ominous shift in the soldier's demeanor revealed something far more sinister at work. The soldiers’ eyes had a sickly glow, and as they lurched forward, it became clear: something was wrong. Far more than they thought.
----------------------------------------
A BATTLE AGAINST CORRUPTION
The soldiers attacked without warning, throwing the group into a chaotic fight that tested their newfound abilities. Before they knew it, the soldiers had taken on monstrous grotesque forms, transformed by sickly dark light. Tanaka, with his massive blade, felt the strange comfort of his weapon as it responded to his movements with deadly precision. Mira conjured illusions and controlled ice and fire, discovering a range of elemental magic that was as thrilling as it was overwhelming. Whisker found himself able to mimic the techniques of Tanaka and Lucas, tapping into speed and strength that felt almost foreign.
Together, they fought hard, pushing their limits to protect the citizens and refugees caught in the fray. By the end of the brutal battle, they had managed to save most of the civilians, though not without casualties. Exhausted and shaken, they took stock of the grim reality that corruption had taken root, threatening to consume even the city’s last safe haven. Each member of the group began to feel the weight of their new reality pressing down on them, knowing they couldn’t return to the lives they once had.

RECKONING WITH REGRET AND RESPONSIBILITY
The aftermath of the battle brought a wave of introspection. Ava, curious and troubled by the corruption, spoke with Captain Aric to understand more about its dark influence. She learned that Everlight had been looking into the corruption himself, but both had come up empty handed as the source could not be found and the corruption kept moving. Meanwhile, Whisker struggled with the moral implications of killing, doubting his place among these reincarnates. Tanaka, thrust into a leadership role he hadn’t anticipated, began reflecting on his own life, haunted by memories of his estranged son. Tensions surfaced as Lucas, the once self-reliant firefighter, clashed with Tanaka’s instinct to lead, both of them challenging each other’s perspectives on trust and responsibility.
In the midst of their reflection, Mira shared a disturbing vision she had seen during the battle—a lone figure surrounded by corruption, engulfed in darkness. She confided in Ava, but Ava dismissed it as stress or confusion. The vision, however, left Mira with an uneasy feeling that there was something more at work, something waiting for them in the shadows.
Just then, Mirabelle received devastating news: her fiancé, Everlight, had gone missing. And she was to immediately return to the Grand Hall.

A PLEDGE TO FIGHT
They quickly make it back to the Grandhall where, Mirabelle is revealed the dire situation, by head of the heralds Elyndra. Realizing the depth of the stakes, Mirabelle pleads with the group after watching how they acted during the battle earlier to help her look for Everlight. Everlight, tasked with maintaining the city’s barrier, had been investigating corruption in the sewers but had mysteriously disappeared. Tensions ran high, with Lucas questioning why they should risk their lives for a stranger, and Ava skeptical about what they would gain from it. But Whisker, who had been silent, spoke up, urging them to use their new powers to make a difference. His words resonated, breaking through the group’s apprehension, and in that moment, a reluctant consensus formed—they would go with Mirabelle to find Everlight and save the Last Bastion.

PREVIOUSLY ON THE LAST CHAPTER
As the night fell, they settled into a lodge arranged by Mirabelle and Aric. After meeting to go over what they will be doing, and creating a plan for going down into the sewers, each lost in their own thoughts as they wander around the lodge. Whisker confided in Tanaka about his struggle with his new body, and Tanaka, seeing Whisker as he might a son, offered him the first real sense of belonging since their arrival. Mira, who felt dismissed by Ava, sought Aria’s support, finding comfort in their quiet understanding. Meanwhile, Felix and Ava engaged in a probing debate over the nature of Aetheria and its strange magic, sparking a bond that hinted at more than mere curiosity.
Yet, as Ava returned to her room, a haunting scene unfolded before her. She glimpsed shadows coalescing around Whisker, only to vanish when she blinked, leaving her unnerved. Mirabelle, too, was restless, her mind occupied with thoughts of Everlight and the danger lurking beneath the city. Just as Ava was convincing herself it was all exhaustion playing tricks, a sudden, piercing scream shattered the night.
