Chapter 40: Its simply complicated

“Well, we will meet you two back up on the road!” the corporal quickly said before rushing himself and his troop back up towards the road.

With no good response coming to mind, Brad was helplessly stammering with very little actually being said in response to Mia’s question.

“Brad, why were you holding Melissa when we saw you up on the road?” Mia asked once more, now with a hint of something painful entering her voice.

“I was helping her up. ” Brad quickly interjected.

“What? Did she fall? Why were you with her to begin with?” Mia quickly asked.

“Well she kinda was just laying there, so I figured I should give her a hand.”

“Brad, that makes zero sense. Why would she have been laying on the road?” Mia asked a little too desperately.

“Mia, you have it all wrong! We were down in the grass!” Brad hurriedly added.

With eyes going wide, Mia spun around and dashed off leaving Brad with one final word…. “Jerk!”

Left with only his short familiar standing next to him, Brad was struggling to process how complicated the past few minutes had hurriedly made his life. His quest to meet his girlfriend on her way back had quickly left him in a very precarious situation in regards to his standing with her.

“Rumble, what just happened?” Brad asked without moving his eyes from the spot that Mia had disappeared through the grass.

With a combination of question mark and shrug emojis, Rumble was reassuring him that he was just as confused. But true to its nature, Rumble stayed optimistic and tugged on Brad’s pant leg in order to get him moving.

“Rumble, let's go and try to catch Mia before she hits the road.”

Not quite catching up to Mia before making it to the road, Brad saw her set off towards home followed closely by the corporal trying to get her to go as a group.

“Brad!” Melissa’s voice echoed through the night.

At the sound of the other girl’s call, Mia started to move a bit faster with the corporal finally giving in and having half the squad follow her ahead of the group.

Ignoring Melissa’s call, Brad hurried to catch up to his obviously distraught girlfriend. “Mia, wait! I guarantee you that it isn’t what you think it is!” I’m not even sure what you think it is, but I know that it isn’t that!”

Coming to a complete halt and spinning on her foot, Mia stomped back towards him before planting her feet with her face staring up straight into his. Tears peaking from red eyes, Mia was shaking with an aura of barely held fury.

“Then what is it Brad!? What led to the events of finding my boyfriend holding another girl after helping her up from where they were lying in the grass? For heck’s sake, I was literally gone for less than a day!” Mia demanded of him in an unrestrained tone that slowly tapered off into a tear filled sob.

Reaching out to comfort her, Brad went to hug the obviously hurt girl, but was quickly rebuffed before she straightened her back once again, obviously demanding that he answer the all important questions.

“Why? What happened?” Mia squeaked past her clenched teeth.

“Brad was just help-” Melissa started to interject after having approached before being cut off by Mia’s outstretched hand dismissing her… all without ever having the clearly upset girl spare her a glance.

With a tense moment of meeting her gaze, Brad spoke in the most sincere voice he could manage. “Mia I don’t know how it looked, but I was worried about you and was on my way to meet you walking back. Rumble and I saw Melissa in the grass hiding from monsters, I'm assuming. We helped her up and that's when that guard shot Rumble. I’m not sure how everything spiraled out of control, but god only knows that I am the most confused person here. I don’t know why Melissa is here and frankly I don’t care if it makes you this upset. I don’t know what kind of feud you two share, but I’m choosing your side right here and now.”

With his explanation finished, Brad tried once more to draw Mia into a hug with her not resisting beyond a grumpy slap to his chest before being called a “Dumb Jerk” and having her bury her teary face into his shirt.

After a few quiet moments, with a set of pursed lips, Mia looked up at her boyfriend before glancing over to Melissa. “So why are ‘You’ here?”

Caught off guard by the overall situation and obviously not informed of Brad's dating status, Melissa was at a loss of words for what she should say. “I was just coming by to see if Brad had thought anymore about my offer. I was hoping that he would join my dungeon party.”

With both women looking at him Brad quickly answered; “I don’t think I will Melissa. I have the company with Mia and things are going well. I have no plans to leave it anytime soon.”

“Very well. I am sorry that I was under a faulty assumption. I wish you both well, but just send me a note if it ever changes.” Melissa quickly said before turning back towards the now awkwardly waiting guards.

Obviously way below a rank paid enough to interject into the current mess, the corporal was more than happy to see it somewhat resolve itself as the woman named Melissa approached him.

“Sir, would you mind escorting me back to town? I seem to have gotten lost with my destination.” Melissa said politely with a slightly too stiff posture.

“Uh, sure. We can head back, its not like I wanted to do a full patrol anyways, this will make a good reason to return early.” Glancing over at the cute girl that they had been escorting, he tried to ask in as a professional manner that he could muster; “Will you be needing further escort Miss Mia?”

“No corporal, I have this dumby to carry my stuff the rest of the way home.” Mia said, once again beating Brad’s chest with her hand.

“Understood. And sir, we are truly sorry for the violent misunderstanding. Sometimes we don’t get the benefit of waiting in similar situations. Sometimes it is life or death.” the corporal finished while holding eye contact with Brad.

“I’m not saying that I forgive you, but I do understand. But I will say this, thank you for making sure that Mia was safe on her way here.” Brad responded to the man.

“Don’t thank me, it was actually Edgar that got her the escort lined up.”

“Well, thanks anyways.”

“No problem at all. Stay safe on your way home.” the corporal said before turning towards his troops and starting to issue orders for their return to town.

“Bye Brad, Mia…. I am happy for you two, even if you don’t believe me.” Melissa called to the pair before setting off with the patrol.

Mia and Brad watched the patrol move off, their light slowly dimming with distance before disappearing behind tall grass after having the road make a gentle turn.

Looking up at her boyfriend, Mia couldn’t help but to feel guilty. “Brad, I am sorry. It has been a long day and it just looked really bad…. I should not jump to conclusions huh ....”

Reaching down, Brad cupped his girlfriend's face in his hand before kissing her softly on the lips. Bringing his face away from hers, he stared into her eyes with a mischievous smile playing across his face. “Mia?”

“Yes?”

“Who is Edgar?”
