Chapter 3: Rest in peace

Day 3:

I decided last night that I’ll try to find fuel for the car since I’m not riding on a horse, I tried doing that in fourth grade and fell on my ass pretty hard. I left the campsite near down trying to scourge the cemetery area for some burning oil. I decided to leave Emily with a note in the security of the Humvee as well as our supplies as well as the key I had.

I arrive at the gate of the cemetery at 3:00 am and start my watch to keep track of the time. I then run the first-hand check again before getting in the cemetery. Combat knife, check; m1911 with one extra magazine, check; the rusty shovel for ranged attacks, check. “Looks like I’m all set, let’s do this!” I say with a confident, courageous voice. Despite, the dark and death-wrenching look of the gate somewhat almost made me piss myself…

Following the plan I made earlier, I then carry out my objective. First, recon to estimate the opposing forces. Thanks to the “focus” ability God gave me, I easily pinpoint the 10 undead roaming around the morgues and catacombs. I ought to sneak by them and stay low to not gain too much attention and should try to take them out if I get the chance. I crouch through the open graves using the headstones as cover and try to approach one who was roaming around.

“It’s just a corpse, there’s nothing to be scared about…” I reassure myself as I slowly approach it.

Grabbing the zombie by the neck, I could smell the rotting meat and feel the sliminess of the oxidized skin. With a precision stab, I puncture the skull of the monster and leave it lifeless.

The feelings after the kill are somewhat mixed up. It feels like I’m going to throw up while laughing to the point that the puke would get to my nose.  However, due to the current situation and my kill which have also attracted stragglers, I decided to sprint. M1911 and combat knife in hand, I then sprint across the burial fields and take refuge in one of the morgues.

I run to the left morgue building and close the door tightly, knowing that the undead will break through the doors easily and be hoping not to get in a situation like Emily, I decided to not barricade the doors, but to use the debris and pieces of logs and wood to get the undead into a line, and create a trap that might hold them back for a while. I then make as much sound as possible, hoping to get their attention.

“COME GET A PIECE OF MITSUHA! ANYBODY HUNGRY? MITSUHA’S GREAT THIS TIME OF YEAR!” I yelled at the idling stragglers outside slowly making their way to me.

I then get in position, holding a piece of curtain, I then hide and wait for the undead arrival. Two, three of them got through the door and walk to the trap I have set. They knock over the chairs which set off a chain reaction that let some ropes which were loosely hung from the ceiling to fall on them. I then jump off from my hiding place and quickly cover the two undead who was standing idly at the front door with the curtains and push them in with the other two. I then kick the door close tight and take some rope I brought earlier to lock the door. I manage to take out some but not all of the zombies outside. I then make use of the time I just made to scourge the grounds for supplies.

This book was originally published on Royal Road. Check it out there for the real experience.

Near the morgue, I found 4 bottles of rubbing alcohol and 3 turpentine and 2 cans of lantern oil. A pretty good find if I were to say so myself. Gather what I have found, I then make my way pass the 5 remaining undead as they are closing in on me and loitering around more will get me killed.

With haste, I sprint towards the gate and easily make it pass them. This’ll be easy I suppose.

*sfx: Groaning.

Suddenly, multiple horrific groans grabbed my attention. I stop my motion and stand still for a moment to assess the situation, seems like there is something else here.

WEaaaaaaaaarGH!

A loud disfigured sound catch me off guard as loud footsteps of human-like beings rampantly stampede towards me. I ready my stance and weapon, as the adversaries lunge themselves at me.

At the same time, 4 shadowy figures with long claws lunge at me with killing intent. I dodge to the left, and ready the CQC pose that I once see in “Platinum gear solid” and focus my gaze on them. What I see surprised me, knight armour? They also have a cross symbol that looked similar to Emily’s. So these are the men who protected Emily, quite a noble act if one is to ask me.

“So you guys are Emily’s entourage huh?”

I then give them a slight bow of respect for their sacrifices and steadily aim my gun.

“I thank you for the work you did. I’ll now grant you the peaceful rests that you all deserve.”

With my M1911 I lay down 3 fast shots to the running enemies. Two shot hits the front guy the others were able to dodge my shots then suddenly “CLICK!”

“WHAT!?”

The guns suddenly stop discharging, as the zombie almost slash my face off.

I dodge the attack ad parry it with my shovel.

“ARGH!” I grunt as one of their claws slash by and give me a deep cut on my left arm.

I then lunges to safety quickly cover my wound with the scarf I was wearing while three remaining undead try to identify my whereabouts.

Despite I failed at parrying their attack, I still gain some information. These guys have short term memories, razor sharp claws, an insanely fast movement speed and some what basic parry and dodge skills.

After seeing the pattern of their movement and attacks, I quickly devise a plan to fighth them head on since the gun jammed on me, so I reach for my melee weapon. The shovel have suffered a toll from that strike so I drop it and ready my combat knife.

“Impressive! Dead but still got some moves. I commend you guys for that.”

Two of them break formation and run toward me, claws ready. Focusing on one of the oncoming enemies, I then aim my knife towards him. As he raises his claw to slash me, I duck down, aim my knife at the chin of his head and stab the under of his chin. At the same time using his lifeless body as a shield to repel the attacks of two others. They lunge at their fallen brother with bloody claws and punctured the lifeless body of the undead knight. I then dodge away as they try to pull their claws out of the body.

I draw my gun, hitting it hard on the side and discharge the casing and chamber one round. *Ka-chink*

I then effectively dispatch 2 rounds to the enemies’ heads, taking them down immediately. Well that went accordingly to plan. If I fired the gun earlier, they might have dodged the bullets and somewhat stabbed my eyes out.

I then search their body for useful things and maybe some identification papers or charms for Emily to hold as a memoir to honour her deceased friends. I claim their cross tags and take a map that one of them had on their body. Two hours have gone by, the undead has been starting to rise up now.

I decide to end my search. Gathering all my belongings and fuel, I make a run for the gate followed by hundreds of undead that have risen once again.
