As much as I hate introductions, my life would not be the same if it wasn’t for a handful of people that I was blessed to have crossed patch’s with. In this case though I guess it was entirely up to fate. I could not start this tale with a better person to introduce other than my mother, if it wasn’t for this incredible woman that fought against so many misfortunes and never gave up I probably would still be the same dull and scrawny brat running down the alley ways of Poar with the other less fortunate delinquents.
Mom is the eldest daughter of two farmers, which unfortunately were killed on a monster attack, her other 3 youngest siblings were also taken to the next life and it all happened when she was only 15 years old. her little brother and herself, survived by sheer luck, by staying in her best friend’s house that night, which is the next farm not far away.
Not much is known about my grandparents, as common folk they had no literature skills, they didn’t know how to write or read, they had no documents and not many possessions, as a child I liked to imagine the two of them living in the forest as guardians, keeping the monsters at bay, planting their own food and looking after their children. Turns out that reality is way more cruel as the only thing left from their corpses were their clean skulls and their children’s.
Mother always said they were really humble and caring people and would be the best grandparents that someone could have if they still drew breath, their parents were also farmers but were no longer between us, so when they died she had no one else but a younger brother to take care of. It’s unfortunate as the poor usually are the ones to suffer the most, living in the worst places, working the most, eating just enough to survive.
Against all the odds, mom managed to sell her family’s farm which was located 5 kilometres outside Poar’s external walls although the farm was in the wilderness, Poar’s Lord conceded contracts for independent farmer’s that wanted to venture so far from the city, giving the land for the farmers after a period of 10 or so years with an agreement of selling their products directly to the city main market during the time and after this period they were free to do as they pleased with whatever they produced. After the incident mom sold it to the nearest farmer’s family which was her best friend’s family. As a land free of contract and the buy being known to her, the family was more than happy to buy it as a way to help the poor girl and her brother, also because it would be very profitable as the contract is already over.
With the money revived for the farm, approximately 3.000 credits or 3 gold bars, mom managed to get a one bed-room wooden hut for 500 credits or 2 gold coins and one silver coin where she lived with my little uncle.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
I still remember her telling me the events of how desperate she was, being a 15 years old teenager with a 10 years old brother to look after, no job, with her parents recently passing and so much to worry to burden regarding her circumstances. Fortunately things turned out just fine, she made friends with some of the local neighbours and manager to take a job as a chef apprentice for one of the Lord’s Knight. This went on for around 8 years until she met my father.
It was in one of the Lord’s balls that the fateful event happened, she was asked if she wanted to make an extra working as a waitress (not expected due to her being a Cooker but I could tell why they would ask her just by looking at her face, mom beautiful).
It was expected to be a really extravagant event for many people to come, from close cities to the different countries within South Bristol. It was the celebration of the birthday of the Lord’s first son. My father was a foreigner, from where no one knows, but clearly not from South Bristol as we all speak the same language and father apparently had a slightly different accent, mom said he never mentioned where he’d come from and every time she asked about it or his family he would completely ignore her or change the subject, always. The only concrete thing she knew of was that he was here to the service of the King, Calcius III. (For as silly as it sounds now, I don’t judge her lack of concern. I don’t think she had ever met anyone before that would make her this happy).
He was one of the Lord’s honoured guests and mom says she fell for his charm and cheekiness almost instantly, she also states that she could fell that the man also had the same feelings for her. She could tell by the look in his eyes that the man completely loved her but he was afraid of letting people know of their intimate relationship. (And if being honest, I’d understand him too, he apparently was from a high-rank within the Military, even though it’s extremely rare for us to have foreigner’s at all in our country. And my mom? She was a merely Cheef for some unknown’s Knight family). Apparently he also had one of his iris darkened red which left my mom speechless upon the night I was born, I think she thought it was a unique occurrence and not something passed down through father to son, but I am sure he never mentioned it either.
They only stayed together a few months until my mom felt sick and came to the conclusion she was pregnant, the day she thought it would be the best of her life actually became to be one of the saddest as she told him she was pregnant. She could see the blood in his face drawing, the man became a stone, frozen in thought, from that moment on she understood that something between the relationship of them two was really wrong, and it proved correct when he suddenly disappeared leaving behind just an exquisite necklace and an apologies letter. (I was only told this story when I was about 15, until then my mom kept telling me my father was a guild’s hunter and amazing tales of him and how he had died hunting on a troll that was killing farmers, I am pretty sure that telling me the truth was a failed attempt to avoid her son working for the local’s guild).
