4. The Overseer of G-Z7

She plastered the relevant page along the window, comparing it to the Corrupted within.

M

Relatively safe. You will have to be caught off guard to be injured. Injuries resulting from M-Threat Level Corrupted can be easily tended to with potions.

There were 7 tiers of Threat Levels used to define the Corrupted in ImpulseWorks Facilities.

It went from M – the lowest, to K, G, F, A, B and then finally, O, the highest and those that were known to cause the total loss of a Site.

How classification works.

The Corrupted will be defined by a string of characters and numbers. This is called their Code and simplifies processes on the Navigator’s end. This is only used internally by ImpulseWorks.

The Moons of the Nexus could not care less about codenames.

For example:

She was consumed by the manual as she made checks to ensure that the enclosure matched the diagram. Thankfully, the Corrupted within did not require much maintenance as far as she was concerned.

Lucky.

Else she would have had to enter its enclosure.

She cast a sigh of relief, placing hand onto the window as she gazed upon her own reflection. Her amber eyes strained slightly the longer she stared at the light. It was obvious that the precaution took a toll on her, and she wondered if she’d really be ok.

What am I saying. I gotta do this. What have I been working towards for my whole life? A light can’t scare me. There’s only so many Navigators out there. Less than 20 of us. I have to cherish this.

She shook her head, then nodded at herself self-assumingly as she clasped a fist by her face.

“Alright! One Corrupted already in the facility!” She shouted to cleanse the lonely air before suddenly –

“Isn’t it too early to be loud, dear Navigator?”

– woman spoke from further down the corridor.

The Navigator’s blood froze. Her heart plunged into an arctic sea as she twisted her body around to face a tall, dark woman dressed in a similar apparel as hers. She had a neutral face, subtle smile and her eyes remained sealed.

“I must apologize for the fright. I should have left a memento on the receptionist counter regarding my arrival.”

She walked gracefully towards her, her black boots instilling dread rather than reassurance into the Navigator as she became incapable of speaking. Words betrayed her parted lips. The woman stopped about a meter away before introducing herself.

“Be not afraid. I am this Site’s designated Overseer. G-Z7. Oh? Is it my hair? I am unfortunately not one of those ‘Doves’ as you may have thought. Healing isn’t a power of mine. We’re still waiting for one, aren’t we?” She spoke in an elegantly feminine manner, but there was a certain coldness woven within.

It wasn’t an unnatural coldness. Rather, it was the same kind the Navigator had known other Overseers to display, usually caused after becoming numb by the demand of the Site, and the deaths of countless colleagues.

Eventually, she was able to swallow again, and allowed to breathe by within the woman’s presence. She attempted to use ‘Status’ on her – a skill of the Blessed that let them see the levels and stats of other non-Blessed beings and confirmed that she too was a Blessed, as nothing appeared before her.

Blessed numbered in only the few thousands in all Elysia and were egregiously fortunate compared to the millions, perhaps billions of people that yearned to become like them.

“You’re… the Overseer, right? I-I guess there’d be no other way for you to get in on a minus day.” Papilia finally concluded, also connecting several dots as to why the place seemed to clean.

Somehow, she could feel the woman staring intently at the pocket watch in hand, and in that moment, the woman sniffed the air before Papilia offered her hand.

“Papilia. Navigator of G-Z7. At your service, and I hope we can get along! But – I’ll also have to conduct a short audit. It’s protocol. I just need to see if you can access the Cognition Terminal.”

This amused the woman, and she gladly took Papilia’s hand.

And just like her demeanour, her flesh was as cold as steel.

“I’d have to conduct one on you too. It’s enough proof that we were able to enter on such a fated day. But you’re correct. Protocols are mandatory. Hmhm. Papilia…

… I see. ‘Butterflies’. Then, my dear Navigator, I implore that you to refer to me as Aisyle.”

“Um… Pronounced as?”

“Aye – Sill. The ‘E’ is silent. You’re quite humorous… you have a nice scent too. I believe we will get along just fine. You are the voice that shall whisper knowledge into my ears. My job is simply to conduct them, no?”

“That’s right. Wait… are you also new?”

The woman didn’t answer immediately.

“Am I?”

Don’t tell me she’s secretly a clutz or something. I gotta watch out for her. But she seems nice. I wonder how she sees when her eyes are closed like that… Could it be an Atelier Item?

The Navigator didn’t realize it at first, but the ticking of her watch became silent in the presence of this person, as if in submission.
