Chapter 6 - Large Shadow

Chapter 6 - Large Shadow

The echoes of people yelling and screaming fade into the distance while the sounds of multiple steps accompany Fleck as he moves through the old ruins of a city underground. Humid air that feels heavy in his skin, thick with each breath, his feet constantly splashes the little puddles that the constant falling of droplets have made on the ground.

-”We can’t go back now”- Fleck can hear the boss say -”so we will just have to move out with what we have.”-

-”What is this place?”- He hears one of the men beside the boss ask.

-”Seems that we have a foreigner with us!”- the boss says as he lets a burst of roaring laughter escape -”Sorry, sorry, my bad, it is just that escape from the Zunkoi’s dogs was a bit thrilling for my age…”- he says while resting both hands on his knees, catching a breath, then finally answering the question -”This, my friend in money, are the ruins of the old city of Zunko. This is how it was before a bunch of hypocrites revolted against the Gods.”-

The man was about to speak once more, but Fleck speaks first -”If we dawdle here anymore, those dogs will find us. They know how to move through these ruins well enough.”-

-”Good point!”- says the man pointing towards Fleck with his ringed hand -”So lets cut the chat and keep moving!… but before that, are you truly going to carry him with you all the way?”- the boss adds, pointing his finger downward to Selvin. Fleck has been carrying him under his arm the whole time, and he had gone silent for a while now.

-”He will not be a hindrance”- Fleck assures.

-”This isn’t the time to play house…”- One of the mercenaries comes forward, a white, lean man wearing black and purple leather armor with dreadlocks.

Fleck frowns, putting his free right hand on his sword’s handle, at which faint blue light starts little by little to pour out.

-”If you don’t want this place to be your grave, I suggest you keep to your issues”- Fleck remarked.

The mercenary reacted with putting both of his hands on his twin swords at his hips, but before he unsheathed them, a strong sound passed right above the entire group, startling them all.

-”I don’t know what was that about, but if we stay here any longer we will all be captured”- Fleck remarks.

-”He is right, so instead of killing each other at least withhold your death until we are out there and the J’avos appear! I pay you to be at least dinner for them! Let's move out!”- the boss exclaims as he makes a motion with his hand and starts moving.

The mercenary with dreadlocks gets back to the group, and then Fleck joins them, still in the rearguard.

-”Boss”- another mercenary speaks -”if they know well the ruins and know how to move through them, why haven’t we been caught by now?”-

-”My friend in money, there are two things important in this life: Money and connections! If you have money and the right connections to where push that money, anything is possible!”-

-”In other words, you bought us time”- another mercenary says.

-”Well, if we were to be found then yes, that was the arrangement, which is the case.”-

-”What a flimsy policy”- Fleck says.

-”Better than no policy at all!”- the boss says, throwing both arms in the air.

-”It is just a waste of your money”- Fleck replies -”After all, those people’s greed…”- Fleck makes silence for a moment to let the echoes of multiple heavy steps, armor and orders reach them -”… they can’t be satiated.”-

After a moment of silence, the boss only yells -”Follow me!”-

As he moves to the front of the group, he chants an incantation that Fleck can’t make out, and suddenly he starts moving at incredible speeds.

Struggling to keep pace, they move through many environments in a small amount of time. A courtyard, stairs going down, some hanging gardens that still resisted the pass of time, many streets at which out of nowhere law enforcement officers pop out of the buildings at the sides and attack the large group, capturing many of them.

Jumping into a ridge that led into a chasm, they fall into an abandoned garden with many upward stalagmites stabbed a couple of mercenaries. Falling badly since he was carrying Selvin with himself, one of these stalagmites cut Fleck’s leg by the side, but that didn’t stop him from standing right away and move as fast he could without dropping the boy right there.

Getting to a large circular area full of water, feet deep, at the center of it lied a large automated cart a couple of horses length and wide, floating gently. The large shipment was covered by a dark cloth so it wasn’t visible from the outside.

Jumping to the front, the boss yells -”to the back, hurry!”-

The large group concentrates on the back as they start boarding the cart with Fleck still behind them. Another sudden sound, with the feeling of the air being slightly pushing against his face, and Fleck catches how some sort of large reddish shadow lands over the cart. Lowering his eyes, he sees how the mercenary with dreadlocks from before raises a magical weapon, smug smile in the face, and pronouncing a single word, the weapon fires a single restraining spell against Fleck. Unsheathing slightly his own sword, the faint blue light this time around catches the spell, firing it back against the same mercenary, which drops into the floor being turned like a log, arms and legs together, tight, being unable to move.

Getting to the cart, Fleck raises his eyes to see again the large shadow, but it was nowhere to be found.

As he throws Selvin inside, the cart starts to move. Grabbing to the back of the cart, he looks back at the mercenary, uttering a single word to him -“Moron.”-

Fleck gets on the cart as it starts speeding forward, being moved side to side by the multiple spells that hit it from the side, lighting up the crimson mithril threads that this dark cloth had incorporated within. Leaving the cave and ruins behind, they get out of Zunko riding over one of the old Aqueducts that are still left standing.

Turning back, the boss yells -”Hold on tight to something!”-

Fleck instinctively grabs the shipment that is in front of him, covered by another dark cloth, as he mutters -”What could he m-”-

Unable to end his sentence, Fleck learns what the boss was speaking about: The Aqueduct ended in a sudden waterfall, one from where all of them just jumped from.
