With another heave, Bubai tucked Old Liu's lifeless body into the sack. Glancing at the old man's wrinkly monkey-face with wide-opened eyes, Bubai gently reached out, closing them.
The old fritter was smart, seeming to have guessed something of the situation from the minor clues. Regardless, Bubai could still tolerate him. They were both fellows who knew how to play dumb.
But the poor old man still couldn’t escape the scrutiny of the demoness… and unlike Bubai, she has shown no toleration for anything getting in between them.
The interrogation was a trap she set up, his tryst with her serving as the evidence to fuel Manager Qin’s anger, and the result… Poor Old Liu was made into the scapegoat, killed with a borrowed knife.
Tying up the sack, Bubai let out a sigh and stood up, staring down at the pouch of grain he found on Old Liu's body. In the end, he resisted his greed and walked into Manager Qin's residence.
Tuk. Tuk. “Come in.” Bubai heard Manager Qin's gruff invitation.
Pushing open the door, he stepped into Manager Qin's study, finding the man engrossed in sifting through a stack of papers- the worker's contracts.
Walking to the desk, Bubai placed the pouch on Manager Qin's desk. "Boss Qin, I found these on Liu Dafan's body."
Manager Qin looked up, nodding in approval as he reached out to pocket the pouch. "Haha… I knew I could trust Xiao Chen to do the job right. This is why I will always reserve a spot for a man like you under my wings."
Inwardly, Bubai didn't react much to Manager Qin's offer, but outwardly he presented a silly smile as he rubbed the back of his head. "I’ll listen to Boss Qin… Then, Boss Qin, when will we head to Ling City?"
"No hurry, no hurry. I will have to take a trip tomorrow to pick up a new worker anyways. So, we can do it all at once..." Manager Qin waved for Bubai to back off.
However, Bubai inwardly gritted his teeth, standing there.
The demoness was finally busy taking a bath, and based on what he observed in the past, she wouldn't be done for an hour or two. This was the best chance for him to escape her grasp! How could he back off now?
Seeming to sense the unmoving Bubai, Manager Qin glanced up. "What is it? Why aren't you going back to work?"
Bubai shuffled his steps slightly, answering with an awkward smile, "Boss Qin, don't you think we should make a report sooner?"
Manager Qin squinted his eyes, his happy smile turning into a slight frown. "What? So urgent... I heard you had a good relationship with that Liu Dafan. Do you want to seek redress for him?"
Squeezing a smile, Bubai bowed his head honestly, "No, Boss Qin, you misunderstood. I was just suggesting for your sake."
"Oh?" Manager Qin raised a brow, suppressing his anger as he picked up his cup of tea and took a sip. "Tell me, Xiao Chen. I hope you can convince me, or else..."
Bubai took a couple of steps closer, looked around sneakily, before he whispered, "Boss Qin, delaying may not be good for us. The night is long, the dreams are many. Remember Ah Niu... and Wu Gou... if Liu Dafan's corpse…"
Manager Qin's hand stilled in the air, his brows furrowing in thought. After a moment, he set down his tea cup with a darkened face, understanding the situation.
He still didn’t have a single clue regarding the demonic cultivator making trouble on his farm, and he wasn’t sure if they had left.
Although he could attempt to prevent it by keeping the corpse in his residence, but isn’t that just inviting the wolf into his own home? He still hasn’t lived long enough!
This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.
If he keeps the corpse elsewhere overnight, if it really ends up like before or even lead to another life being lost...
For situations like these, unless he could permanently silence everyone on the farm, it would be hard to keep it from leaking. It wasn't something he could hide from Ling City.
He could turn in a normal mortal corpse, and there might not be much trouble, but if it was another corpse with connections to the demonic sect…
Once or twice, he could suppress it with a small payment, but a third time, his farm might attract investigators.
It’s fine if the investigators are from Ling City, but if he’s unlucky enough to attract those righteous members of those big sects…
Forcing a commoner girl, exploiting mortal workers to death, pocketing taxes… and we haven’t even started counting his atrocities as a loose cultivator!
If he bumps into those righteous, hot-blooded idiots from those orthodox sects, his little life will not be able to handle the backlash! Especially with all the recent hype...
With this realization, Manager Qin quickly sifted through the contracts, pulling out a piece and keeping it in his robe.
After locking up the rest, he stood up, walking around to Bubai, patting him on the shoulder. "Good. Good. Thanks to Xiao Chen for reminding me… Ha… I really didn't see it. Xiao Chen is much smarter than he looks."
Manager Qin gave Bubai a deep look before walking away.
Bubai knew he couldn't hide his clumsiness much longer, but since he was bent on leaving, it didn't matter much even if he lost the honest Chen title he had worked so hard to build.
Following Manager Qin out, with a happy grin on his face, Bubai hurried over to the sack, carrying it over his shoulder, ready to leave the farm with Manager Qin.
Although Manager Qin could carry it alone, he wasn't a body refinement cultivator, and carrying a corpse to Ling City for the past two days had already exhausted his patience. This time, he decided to enlist a worker's help.
Carrying a corpse versus farming in the fields the entire day. It should have been an easy choice for the lazy workers, but when Manager Qin added the condition that field work couldn't be skipped regardless if they came on this extra chore, all the workers instantly retracted their hands and turned a deaf ear, leaving only honest Chen with his hand raised.
There was no need to mention the real reason Bubai wanted to come along.
"Let's go. Keep up with me, Xiao Chen, or I'll have to look for someone else next time," Manager Qin grinned, leading the way with swift steps. Bubai quickly chased after the late-stage qi-refiner, his jogging speed barely keeping up with the man’s ‘walking’ pace.
Freedom, here he comes!
However, just as they approached the edge of the farm, a sweet familiar voice, mixed with some urgency, rang out from behind, causing Bubai's body to shudder, his honest smile almost faltering.
"Qin Ge, wait for me!"
Bubai didn't have to look back to know the demoness was here. As he expected... was she always paying attention to him?
Manager Qin looked back at WeiWei, who seemingly skipped to his side. "Oh, what is my dear WeiWei doing here? Are you not taking your bath? You used to take much longer."
WeiWei had a pale face as she shook her head. "Qin Ge, WeiWei was taking her bath, but when she was alone, she felt really scared as if someone was peeking on her! So, WeiWei quickly ran to find Qin Ge because she only feels safe by Qin Ge’s side…”
Manager Qin's ego seemed to be stroked by her words, and he responded, “It’s good that you know who you can really depend on around here.”
Pressing her soft lumps against Manager Qin’s arm, WeiWei stared at him with watery eyes. "Qin Ge, where are you going? Are you going to leave WeiWei behind?”
Manager Qin’s face became lax, “I’m going to Ling City to handle some small matters.”
“Then…” WeiWei smiled as she looked up at Manager Qin with a begging face, “Can you take WeiWei along? WeiWei can serve you overnight…”
Manager Qin’s fiery eyes fixed upon WeiWei, gently stroking her face, rubbing her lips with a grin. “It’ll be quick and I'll be back tonight. My dear WeiWei can wait for me-”
“No!” WeiWei buried her face into Manager Qin’s arm. “Don’t leave WeiWei behind. WeiWei is scared. All those men… they are always staring at WeiWei. If Qin Ge leaves WeiWei alone, when he comes back, I’m afraid… I’m afraid-”
“Preposterous! See if they dare!” Manager Qin’s face turned cold as he stared at the innocent workers on the field, while Bubai bowed his head, lowering his own presence.
“Qin Geeee,” WeiWei’s coquettish voice sounded besides Manager Qin, rubbing herself up and down on his arm. Manager Qin licked his parched lips, his hand reaching out to pinch her, eliciting a soft gasp. “Fine. I’ll listen to you this time. But when we get back tonight…”
WeiWei’s face lit up, her trademark ‘sweet’ smile arising on her face. “Don’t worry, WeiWei knows what to do… tonight, WeiWei will make Qin Ge satisfied till death!”
“Hahaha!” Manager Qin laughed before his gaze trailed over to Bubai, who had his head bowed. “Well, it’s good if you are honest. I like obedient ones the most. Now, let’s quickly complete this matter and hurry back.”
Manager Qin then turned, strutting forward while embracing WeiWei’s waist. Behind, Bubai looked up, his eyes deep as he watched WeiWei’s leaving back.
Manager Qin didn’t seem to have noticed, but WeiWei’s chasing speed, inadvertently revealed earlier, didn’t lose out to the late stage Qi-refiner’s rushing pace!
Shifting the sack into a more comfortable position, Bubai silently followed the duo towards Ling City.
It seems he couldn’t escape the demoness’s Five Finger mountain this time… unless, there is an unexpected situation.
