Chapter 5 - Skirmish

Chapter 5 - Skirmish

"I see the building. Far beyond this fence." Leviticus fiddles with the goggles. "You go first. In case there are other defenses." Winter's eyes flash red and he tears down the fence, a few sparks coming from his body. They continue walking forward, Winter standing in front of Leviticus and shielding him. Winter takes gunfire from hundreds of machine guns, but pushes forwards unphased. "Continue on."

----------------------------------------

Jackie and company sit at their small glass table playing cards.

"This sucks dick," says James. "Full house."

"God damn it!" Shouts Billy. He slams down a pair of Aces.

"Darn looks like... I win," says Abby with a smirk. She lays down a Straight Flush.

"I don't think I like cards," says Paul. Suddenly, the facility's alarm begins blaring. Hank bursts through the door.

"You guys have to get out of here!" He shouts. "Something's coming!"

"What is it? Phineas again!?" Asks Jackie frantically.

"There's no time! It's-" Hank's explanation is cut short with a sickening hurch as a purple fist plunges through his chest. He bleeds from his mouth and he falls to the floor as his eyes roll into the back of his head.

----------------------------------------

Jackie enters tunnel vision as she looks at Hank's corpse lying before them.

"What..." she stammers. James pukes. Jackie looks up. Before her stand a man clad in old-looking armor and some sort of purple... robot. She screams in anger and an impossibly hot stream of fire spits from her body towards the pair. The armored man steps behind the robot. When the flames subside, the man steps back out from behind it.

"Ho ho ho... nice trick." Jackie grabs her head. His very words hurt her mind. Abby screams as he talks. "I've come too far to let something so trivial deter me," says the armored man. "I think it would be easier to introduce myself right away. I am Leviticus. Let's see here." He grabs a pair of goggles siting over the eyeholes of the helmet and twists one of the lenses. He chuckles and points at Jackie. "Ho ho. You lost the dice roll, girl. Come quietly and I will spare what I assume are your friends."

The group looks at each other through the man's painful words. They nod at each other and bellow a war cry before charging at him. He snaps and runs out of the room, leaving them with the large purple robot.

Jackie continues shooting fire at it while circling it, but her flames merely deflect off its metal body. It grabs her by the neck and begins squeezing. Before it can do whatever it was planning, James sticks out his hand and lifts it into the air. It spins its head around and orients itself towards the ceiling before kicking off of it and spinning back around and planting its feet into the ground so hard that the concrete breaks. Its feet now secured, James's telekinesis isn't strong enough to stop it before it reaches him and throws him across the room like a ragdoll. Billy now runs at it, rapidly growing vines from his palms and lassoing them around the robot's head. It spins its head around rapidly, shredding the vines, while running towards Billy, and punches him in the face so hard that his nose completely collapses into his face and launches him across the room. Abby, now filled with anger after seeing her friends attacked like this, screams. Jackie, though barely conscious and rubbing her neck after being strangled, feels the room become much dryer. Abby draws all the water in the room into a fine dart-like projectile and launches it at the robot.

If you spot this story on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

"Hrnn," the robot grunts as the projectile hits him and dents its armor. So that's what her power is. Hydrokinesis. Heh... It won't help much knowing now, though. The robot plants its feet into the ground once again, and jumps off with impossible speed, slamming Abby into the wall. She struggles to breathe. The armored man peeks through the door, and seeing everyone defeated, walks back into the room.

"Well, that was interesting to watch." He looks over to Paul, who is cowering in a corner. "What's wrong? Too scared to protect your friends?"

I don't blame him. He really can't do much fighting with the power to open portals.

The armored man confidently approaches him. Paul takes him off guard and kicks his face. The armored man stumbles back a bit, but the armor mostly protected against the blow. In the brief moment the man is stunned, Paul opens a portal underneath Jackie and she falls through. "What!?" The man adjusts his goggles. "That's a flux rift! That's impossible!" Paul leaps through the portal after Jackie.

----------------------------------------

"You piece of fucking shit!" Jackie yells as she punches Paul. "You left them to fucking die!"

"There was nothing we could have done!" Shouts Paul through tears. "That thing was invincible! I saved you because clearly they're after you for some reason. I had a chance to save you. I couldn't let anyone else die!" Jackie collapses to her knees, surrounded by the sand of the desert Paul apparently took them to.

----------------------------------------

"Fascinating," says Leviticus. "The only way a creature can open a flux rift without a thaumaturgical device is if they can conduct and control flux through their body. It would ordinarily kill any being that attempted it... unless, of course, their body is composed of taint."

Winter continues strangling the girl until she falls limp. He lets her slump to the floor.

"Did you kill her?" Asks Leviticus.

"...Please..." Begs Winter.

"Fine. Very well, then. Ordering you to kill a child could have irreversible phycological effects on your biothaumic mind. For the sake of operation I won't force you. Just don't blame me when she comes back for revenge." Leviticus walks around the room, and crouches down next to the still-bleeding, still-conscious Billy. He chokes and sputters on his own blood as his nose bruises. "Impressive you managed to survive that. I assure you I won't kill you. The ability to create life is surely interesting, albeit something our master would be able to replicate himself quite easily. Now, if you can still talk..." Leviticus places his hands on Billy's head, sending purple energy into his brain and causing him to scream. "...Where did your little friend go?"
