Escape from Eternity
Prologue: Trapped in an Hourglass

Prologue: Trapped in an Hourglass

My hazy vision finally cleared as the blurred static escaped my sight. The suffocation of my throat and blocked ear canals ceased, and a divine melody of nature proceeded to dance through my ear. It’s peaceful and makes me feel giddy all of a sudden. But where am I? I gazed below at my fallen body on the ground in a silken white dress, my hands still trembling from the shock. I guess I still haven’t recovered fully. As I finally raise my head, I saw myself stranded alone in a vast valley, surrounded completely by greenery. I could almost feel the dew drops on the tall grass tips. The sun was yet to rise and the chilly winds were soothing and not harsh. The grass stretched as far as the eye could see and directly on top of it the immense horizon reaching the stars above. I gazed mouth-open at the wondrous beauty of the universe. The sky was crystal clear and the stars shined brightly and galaxies rotated steadily. Comets running after each other as the tremendous galaxies positioned themselves spectacularly. I could look at this all day. I forced myself to not blink once, I didn’t want to miss a single moment of this glorious sight. As I stood up, I felt the ground vibrating, and soon enough those vibrations turned to tremors. A loud explosion shook the earth below and alerted me immediately. I turned anxiously, I was not ready to leave just yet, not again.

I approached the sound knowing exactly what was to come– a meteorite strike. As I neared the vicinity closer to the fallen metallic unidentified object, more meteors came its way through the atmosphere and crashed onto the surface exploding and scattering into smithereens. I have to take shelter or this dream of mine will end soon. Having experienced this multiple times, now I have a head start, I have to run.

My breath staggered, this almost feels real. I look back at the sky, hoping to bask in its glory and magnificence one last time. The scenery that of which I expected— the sky sprinkled with bright stars and smudged galaxies forming a work of art in the vast dark universe— was gone. The galaxies, no more a spiral, untwined like a ball of yarn merging with its neighbour, destroying itself and everything along it path. The stars turned off like lightbulbs. Just as I stopped to witness the amalgamation of galaxies to form a potent black hole, a splitting crack ran deep through the earth. I turned to the crack and saw the unthinkable— the Moon, no more stagnant in it orbit had come crashing down and on the other end came Mars. Trapped by the powers of the universe, I gave up and succumbed to the unending cliff that had formed in front of me, as though waiting for me to be swallowed by it.

I jumped.

Gasp!

The sensation of air filling up my chest, the most relieving feeling I’d ever felt. I jumped from my bed still under the sheets, holding my chest to calm myself. I felt hot and sweat ran down every inch of my body. I glanced around at my room as per instinct and saw that everything was in place. I turned to my alarm clock, there was no display.

What a terrible time to run out of battery…

I slapped it away in frustration. As I sat up straight and pushed away my sheets, I remembered the feeling of being in that dream.

I thought lucid dreaming is supposed to be fun and exciting. Google had me fooled. This dream, I’ve been getting the exact same one for the past month. Maybe it’s time I tell someone…

Just as I start analysing and calculating the new information from this dream, a blaring voice echoed from down stairs. “Suiren! Are you awake? Your better be because you have only fifteen minutes left until school begins!”

Huh..?!

That voice belonged to her caretaker, and as she rose from her bed she was too startled for words. Wait? Fifteen minutes?! I’m going to be so late..!
