Chapter 4 - Eat or be eaten

Chapter 4 - Eat or be eaten

The two rabbits didn't give Eric a chance to get ready. They jumped at him immediately, kicking out with their hind legs and aiming their horns at his face and gut. Eric swung his spear like a staff, somehow blocking one of the attacks. The other rabbit hit Eric straight in the stomach, knocking him down. Upon landing on his back, Eric struggled to breath, panting with the effort to refill his lungs. In the mean time the rabbits were kicking him on his legs, arms, and all about his body. Blood started to run as his denim jeans were no defense against the sharp claws of these so called rabbits.

Through a haze of pain, Eric saw a shadow swoop down from the sky, gathering up one of the rabbits in it's talons like a field mouse. The hawk pierced the rabbit's body and scattered blood over Eric's face as it flew into the clouds. The other rabbit disappeared into the underbrush, leaving an injured Eric to recover.

Eric took stock of his injuries. Fortunately, the first attack was partially blocked by the messenger bag, leaving it destroyed and pages of his notebooks scattered, but keeping Eric from being disemboweled. His shirt and pants were in tatters, his legs and arms running with blood, but none of the wounds looked too deep. Eric took out his undamaged water bottle and took a quick sip before using the remainder to try to disinfect his wounds, and cut his shirt up for makeshift bandages.

Thinking that this might be the best opportunity to get some water, he quickly refilled his bottle from the pond, pain making him careless of further danger. With a potential water source nearby, Eric planned to build a shelter nearby from where he could heal and hunt. Despite the danger, Eric was in no condition to wander far away. Already, he felt run down to his last reserves.

Walking slowly away from the pond he searched around to see if there was a suitable location to build a makeshift shelter for the night. Eric didn't want to dwell on it too much, but he certainly felt outclassed by the environment he was in.
