Chapter 5: Disturbances

Chapter 5: Disturbances

Back at the Emberweaver manor, Sera was becoming increasingly agitated the more she thought about Lily and the hooded figure. She liked to be in control of things, those outside of her sphere of influence could cause harm to her plans. This is why she was so upset with the other members of the council, as they seemingly did whatever they wanted. A moment of contemplation seized her, prompting Sera to question the involvement of the Shadowsong family. The rumors of their underworldly dealings danced in her mind, casting shadows on the pursuit of truth. Could the Shadowsongs hold a key to the mysteries that eluded her? The more she thought about it the more plausible it sounded, yet there was no proof. Sighing in defeat, Sera’s thoughts ran wild, proof of her long and difficult day. Unable to come up with anything substantial she turned to her aide Emma, "Emma," Sera spoke, her voice tinged with urgency, "dig deeper. Explore avenues we haven't touched. The Shadowsongs, the rogue alchemist, Lily—find any connection, no matter how tenuous." Emma, understanding the weight of the request, nodded solemnly. "I'll leave no stone unturned, Master Emberweaver. We'll uncover the truth."

As Emma delved into the ongoing investigation, Sera retreated to her private quarters, the grandeur of Emberweaver Manor offering little solace for her restless mind. Frustration clung to her like an invisible shroud as she prepared to surrender to the embrace of sleep. Instead, as she drifted into her slumber her subconscious was pulled into a grand picturesque landscape. She found herself in a realm of shifting hues and mystical energies—a dreamscape that transcended the boundaries of the waking world. In the ethereal expanse, a figure materialized, ancient and wise. The venerable alchemist bore a presence that resonated with the echoes of centuries past. Sera could not even keep her eyes open to look at this presence whose might was indescribable. Feeling the alchemist's eyes piercing into her, Sera found herself unable to move, stuck in place as the pair of eyes peered into the depths of her soul.

"You believe yourself to be at the peak of Eldoria's alchemy," the ancient alchemist spoke, their voice a melodic cadence that reverberated through the dreamscape. "Yet, you are unaware of the mischievous happenings occurring directly underneath your jurisdiction."

These words left Sera stunned and ashamed. Stunned because this seemingly god-like figure knew everything about her and ashamed because this presence was proof that she was nowhere near the peak of alchemy. All this time she had spent posturing and criticizing others when she herself would most likely be nothing but an afterthought to beings such as the one who pulled her into this dream.

"You are a mere catalyst in the grand alchemical symphony," the ancient alchemist continued. "Eldoria's mysteries run deep, entwined with forces that surpass mortal comprehension. The Alchemical Spectrum awaits, a realm untouched by the hands of those who think themselves masters. Go west, seek out the Demonic Gardens and maybe you will be able to catch a glimpse into true alchemy.”

The dream began to fade, and Sera jolted up out of her bed. Replaying the events of the dream, she checked her body to make sure she was truly awake, the scene of the towering alchemist shaking her to her core. Sera was not stupid enough to blindly follow something someone told her in a dream, for all she knows it could be enemies plotting to wreak havoc.

Shaking off the remnants of the dream, Sera summoned Emma to her private quarters. "Emma, I need you to create a reminder for me," Sera instructed, her voice now composed after the surreal encounter in the dreamscape. "I have to visit the Demonic Gardens. Look into them, investigate. Find out what lies westward that might be of significance."

Emma nodded, her pen swiftly scribbling notes. "Consider it done, Master Emberweaver. I'll compile all the information available about the Demonic Gardens and present it to you."

As Emma delved into her new tasks, Sera took a moment to reflect on her aide's unwavering dedication. Emma had proven herself invaluable, navigating the labyrinthine threads of Eldoria's secrets with diligence. The thought brought a rare smile to Sera's face, a testament to Emma's work ethic.

Recalling how Emma became an aide for the Emberweavers, Sera couldn't help but admire the young woman's tenacity. Emma hailed from a modest background, her family associated with lesser-known alchemical traditions. However, her prowess in magical theory and dedication to the craft had caught the attention of the Emberweavers during one of their recruitment drives.

Sera, then a novice alchemist, was impressed by Emma's analytical mind and offered her the position of an aide. Over the years, Emma's loyalty and skill had solidified her role, making her an indispensable asset to the Emberweaver legacy. However, as Sera grew older she also grew more distant, becoming increasingly focused on her own research and power.

With Emma managing the ongoing investigations, Sera decided to seize the opportunity afforded by her day off. The Elemental Nexus, a sprawling landscape of magical energies and alchemical anomalies, awaited her scrutiny. It was a training ground of sorts, a place where Sera could hone her insights and delve deeper into the mysteries that lingered on the fringes of her understanding.

Leaving the manor, Sera cast a simple water spell underneath her feet, and utilizing a crafty aetherial infusion technique she was able to stand on the water slab she created and glide into the city. Typically only those at the advanced level of alchemy were able to perform this, and they also had to have researched enough about aetherial infusion to grasp the technique. Therefore, as she flew through the city at around a joggers pace bystanders watched in earnest, as high level alchemists weren’t so easily seen nowadays.

As she made it to the grand corridors leading to the Elemental Nexus, Sera strolled while looking around intently to ensure no one slacked off, her every step echoing in harmony with the hallowed ground she tread upon. The pathway was lined with towering crystal formations, their glow casting a soft radiance upon the marble floor. As she approached the Nexus, the air crackled with latent magical potential. The ley lines intertwined, forming intricate patterns beneath her feet.

Two imposing guards stood at the entrance, clad in enchanted armor that shimmered with protective wards. The insignia of the Council of Alchemists adorned their uniforms, a symbol of their authority in safeguarding the Elemental Nexus. To gain access, one needed more than mere authorization; it required a resonance with the magical energies that permeated Eldoria.

The guards exchanged a glance as Sera approached, their expressions a mix of respect and curiosity. "Master Emberweaver," one of them greeted, a note of deference in his voice. "The Elemental Nexus awaits your presence."

The grand doors creaked open, revealing the awe-inspiring expanse beyond. Sera closed her eyes, taking a moment to attune herself to the ebb and flow of Eldoria's mystical energies. It was a ritual she had performed countless times, a communion with the very essence of alchemy.

As the doors sealed shut behind her, Sera could sense the guards exchanging hushed whispers. Rumors lingered in the air, tales of her disdain for the council's decisions and her relentless pursuit of the Alchemical Spectrum. The guards, though bound by duty, couldn't help but murmur behind her back.

"Did you hear about Emberweaver's outburst in the chamber the other day?"

"Someone who cannot keep their temper in check shouldn’t be leading the council"

"She's not like the others. They say she wants to reshape the whole alchemical practice."

Sera paid little heed to the gossip. Instead, she continued her solitary journey through the Elemental Nexus, a sanctuary of magical wonders where the whispers of untapped potential beckoned her. The guardians of the Nexus maintained their vigilant watch, ensuring that only those deemed worthy by the currents of magic could tread upon its sacred ground.

The first anomaly she encountered was a pulsating node of ethereal blue light. Drawing closer, Sera felt a resonance with her own magical essence. The Elemental Nexus responded to her presence, offering insights into the Alchemical Spectrum. She was pulled into a state of comprehension, something she had experienced many times before. These periods could last from seconds to hours. This one was a short one, as she had already gained a substantial amount from this node. This is what spurred her knowledge into aetherial infusion.

Next, she approached a convergence of elemental forces—a dance of fire and water, earth and air. Each element played its part in a delicate harmony, echoing the potential for alchemical synthesis. Sera stared into the beautiful dance the elements were performing, wishing she could grasp the mysteries behind them. She had the deepest knowledge of fire and while the others were not at that level they did not lack to far behind.

As Sera delved deeper, she encountered ley line intersections that whispered of untapped potential. The Alchemical Spectrum, a term that had echoed in her dreams, resonated with the energies she sensed within the Elemental Nexus.

Sera finally found the section of ley lines she would be researching today. These ley lines held secrets of the past, a time where alchemy was practice much more frequently. However, the important thing about these ley lines is that they could boost or teach an alchemist temporal alchemy, perhaps the most sought after branch of alchemy. Sera was certain that if she could understand temporal alchemy she would be able to greatly improve her power and status.

After hours of cross-legged meditation Sera was circling her energies inside of her attempting to see what she was missing. All of a sudden Sera saw a wisp from the ley line and reacted sharply, reaching out in her mind to grab it, yet the wisp pranced away. Almost as if it was taunting her the wisp would return and retreat as soon as Sera reached for it. She even pretended as if she didn’t see it to perform a sneak attack to no avail. Frustrated, Sera stood up, gathered her belongings and began to walk out.

As Sera walked out of the Elemental Nexus, her mind still swirling with the enigmatic energies she had encountered, a sudden explosion shattered the tranquil atmosphere. The ground quaked beneath her feet, throwing her off balance. A wave of force washed over her, disorienting her senses as she stumbled and fell to the marble floor.

Smoke billowed from the epicenter of the explosion, obscuring her vision. Panic seized Sera as she realized the sanctity of the Elemental Nexus had been breached. The guards stationed at the entrance rushed towards the disturbance, their expressions shifting from stoic guardians to vigilant defenders.

Sera fought to regain her composure, the echoes of the explosion still ringing in her ears. Her eyes darted through the dissipating smoke, searching for any signs of the anomaly that had disrupted the sacred space. The ley lines seemed to pulse erratically, disturbed by the sudden intrusion.

The Elemental Nexus, a bastion of serenity, now echoed with the chaos of the unexpected. Sera's heart raced as she clutched the edges of her robes, prepared to face whatever awaited her beyond the dissipating veil of smoke.

Yet, amid the urgency and confusion, there lingered a moment of vulnerability within Sera. The explosion had triggered memories she had long sought to bury—the haunting recollection of her parents' tragic demise in a similar blast. For a heartbeat, she hesitated, a flicker of sorrow clouding her typically resolute gaze. The trauma from her past echoed in the present, slowing her reactions as she grappled with the haunting echoes of that fateful day.
