The world had enough.
Long ago, the supernatural was common. Witches blessed the lands and warlocks protected the people from the monsters; they are people blessed with the ability to interact with the mana of the world.
In those days, fighting was part of everyday life. War was much more frequent than nowadays, but the damage resulting from those wars differ greatly.
When warlocks or witches use mana, it eventually returns to the world.
Mana is in everything. The air, the earth, the trees, water even people. The difference between a witch and a normal human is only a matter of being able to call the mana within themselves to interact with the mana of the world outside one's body.
Interacting with the mana of the world, they knew very well that the world had a will of its own. They called it God. Depending on the time and place they interacted with it, the feelings perceived felt different. For example, in the forest or at sea. That's why people from different countries and ethnicities ended up giving the world's will different names. The goddess of love Freyja, god of war Odin, god of justice Tyr, name it all! In the end, they are all different names of the same being, the world.
In those days, people had it rough. With the threat of monsters, the majority of the population were able warriors. Witches were venerated, warlocks were the population's heroes.
When war struck, the damage caused was always easy to recover for the world. Now, how long would it take to recover from a single nuclear bomb?
A cycle of mana ran through everything, giving life and power to its inhabitant. The world was equal. Not just humans could interact with its mana but animals too. With time, beings evolved.
Some monsters grew strong, too strong. The people felt more and more threatened by the growing threat. And that is when very powerful witches and warlocks from different origins banded together to create forbidden magic. With all the mana from everyone, they forced their forbidden magic onto the world's will. They used every single bit of mana they had to cast the spell. They knew better than to keep any mana within themselves.
On this day the world was wounded.
The world cried; it was hell. Mana was being ripped apart from every being. The spell was not perfect, so a little was left behind. But every being possessing lots of mana couldn't survive being ripped apart.
The mana ripped from everything didn't return to the world but disappeared into nothingness. The world was furious. The world needed its inhabitants to use its mana, grow it and then return it to the earth at their death, creating a cycle helping the world's growth.
But now, everything was being ripped apart. The world threw its anger and erupted. Volcanos appeared everywhere and destroyed the lands. Very few survived the calamity.
The only settlements that survived were the ones who were advanced enough to build pocket dimensions.

After coming out of the pocket dimensions, witches realized the mana of the world was almost gone. Or in fact, asleep. Previously they could feel the world's will through the mana. Now everything felt dead.
After releasing its anger through the volcanos, the world decided to take back his mana to his core and recuperate, leaving very little on the surface. Thus after coming out of the pocket dimensions, witches realized what they could do with mana now was very little. Not even near enough to go back in the pocket dimension.
Humans had a hard time adapting to the ruined world. But they eventually pulled through. People learned to live without mana and with time animals grew again. Nowadays people refer to this catastrophe as the end of the dinosaurs era.
With time people learned that they could live much more peaceful lives without mana. The mana so thin and inactive, the animals didn't grow to the point of evolving beyond control. The witches lost their roles, different enough to be able to use mana but not strong enough anymore to pose a real threat they grew more and more estranged.
Time can change many things. Eventually, they began to be feared. That is when the witch hunt began. Because they were different, the people who they protected turned on them, hunted them and burned them to death.
That is when witches and warlocks disappeared from the world. Most killed, but there are a few still hiding, their bloodlines continuing through generation. But they all knew what would happen if they were found out, so they didn't practice any magic and hid.
Through the passage of time, people forgot about the existence of mana, or monsters or even the world will. They do dream about such a world sometimes, that is how all sort of crazy stories were born.
Nowadays, humans have reproduced far too much. Forests were cut down, the number of cities grew. Humans didn't live a long life and were greedy to enjoy everything. Waste accumulated, resource depleted. Being at the top of the food chain, humans went wild. Not caring one bit about the destruction they caused, life was too short.
Factories continued to pollute the very air they breathe. More and more people are born with problems and allergies. They even developed these cars to move around which also pollute the air. They became quite lazy, these humans.
How many wastes out there are contaminating the waters? Heck, even the pole is melting.
The world had enough.
The world slept for a very, very long time. It thought its inhabitant couldn't cause it any harm if it left the mana so thin on the surface. So it kept sleeping, recovering.
The world's will woke up in pain when the first nuclear bomb exploded in 1945. It felt the radiations left behind, mutating the localized mana. It grew angry. Remembering the last time anger took over, it tough maybe volcanoes weren't the best solution. Since it just woke up, it would take time and observe.
A few hundred years later, the world knew he had to act. It had watched enough, these idiotic humans never learned. Pollution was everywhere, deteriorating the environment. It kept getting worse and worse as the numbers of humans grew.
After a few centuries of carefully considering the situation, remembering how the world worked before everything went wrong, it decided that humans needed an enemy, a predator. Humans couldn't stand alone at the top of the food chain.
Thus, the world's will went through humans creation. Human stories, fictions, fantasies, it kept looking and was impressed by humans imagination. They had already created all these fancy templates for potential predators, so why not use it?
And it found just the right one.
For the first time in who knows how many years, the world sent mana to the surface, waking and filling the pitiful amount present. For the first time since eons, the world's will hummed.
Auroras appeared in the skies, illuminating the ground. The world shook, the sudden burst of mana happened too fast. Few people around the world felt the very air hum, resonating with themselves, humming with feelings of happiness, anger, anticipation. These people were witches descendants, whether aware or not. And they all felt it, the world's decree, the end of an era. Big changes were coming.
On this day, the very first vampire was born.
